Australia: Free Practice 1

Something new we’ll try today, as suggested by Lou is a live comment / chat thread throughout free practice.

Lord knows if many people are planning to stay up for one or both sessions today and there’s probably a whole bunch of fabulous things we could do to make this better, easier, faster or whatever… but who’s interested in forward planning, eh?

We’ll post times, thoughts, and opinions live in the comments as the session progresses and feel free to join in the fun any time!

Oh, and try not to fall asleep, eh?

If this works well, and you decide to do something similar at future races, it may be worth taking a look at some of the American election blogs for ideas. This may seem a little bit of a strange suggestion, but political bloggers have been liveblogging for years, and the scene’s highly developed. Over the last 18 months, or so, many of the main news organisations have jumped on the liveblog bandwagon.

I’ve not seen live video of a free practice session since F1 Digital+ was shut down. Back in the day when Eurosport held the F1 rights, I had been known to watch live free practice when I should have been elsewhere. Rosberg

I’m sure I saw Rosberg sputter into the pitlane right at the beginning.

main “world feed” has timing, backup feed doesn’t. FOM use FP1/2 to sort all their tech issues and it looks like they rolled back to the video without timing.

Christine the reason someone blows a whistle every time a car comes into the pits is so that everyone in the pits knows there is a car coming and they don’t step in front of it. Every race meeting at every level has a marshall standing at the pit entry with a whistle or an air horn.

I remember there was a potentially nasty incident during the GP2 race at Imola, in 2005. Pantano had pitted from the lead for the first round of stops, but as he left his pit box Enrique Scalabroni, from BCN, stepped out right in front of him. The Italian just managed to avoid mowing Scalabroni down.

Ominous result to say the least, but practice never gives you the whole picture. Because of the lack of TC and it’s degredation on tires, most people will do quick first stints on Sunday so quali tomorrow will give you the correct picture because EVERYBODY should be on similar fuel loads…

The microblog tools twitter and pownce also offer up to the second text posts, across a community too

There are plenty of desktop clients that grab twitter updates every few seconds. There’s also an ‘official’ twitter plugin from the wordpress folks - http://wordpress.com/blog/2008/01/28/introducing-prologue/

If you fancy a live tv show, ustream and mogulus both provide a free, streaming service; Mogulus even offers you a tv studio experience ;-) (sort of…!)

I keep meaning to build an automated “intelligent” commentator ( http://blogs.open.ac.uk/Maths/ajh59/006173.html ) so every so often i do a search using various combinations of terms like:

f1, formula one, live, timing, data, api, client, telemetry, streaming

Sometimes its worth throwing in computer languages, so I just came across this for example:
