F1 Digest - Malaysia GP

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

A less eventful race than in Australia, but still with plenty of merit, the eighth edition of F1 Digest covers all the action from the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The Race

Most of the teams seemed to suffer some back luck and also good luck. Ferrari had a win and a retirement, McLaren had a podium and some traffic, BMW had a second place and a tough race.

Conclusions

Ferrari are glad to get their championship campaign up to speed, although Hamilton retains his lead at the top of the driver’s table. And who would have thought that Webber could actually finish a race?

True: The race did have the chance to be an absolute better Farce of a race than Fuji last year. A nice little Monsoon at the start, with the cars queued up behind the safety car and with all the fans wondering if the time limit will occur or the rain will stop and which team hs the biggest fuel tank…. Riveting stuff. Course given enough water you would still aquaplane so I would have expected Bourdais to take out a few other drivers aquaplaning into a corner…..

Nothing personal against the guy, but coming from the American open-wheel series, they have never seen a rain tire in their racing lives….

Of if the rain was falling so much that we get teh aquatic equavalent of a “whiteout” and the leading car can not even see the safety car in front and repeatedly whacks it.

Davidson winning by default (He’s the last car not to hit the safety car) to complete the farce would have been perfect…

Nah, my howls of laughter would have waken up the neighbourhood, a very bad thing to do at 2:00 am in the morning.

I am really glad it did not rain.

    Jordan.

a good point re: fuji. i really want to see if it’s as bad as drivers are trying to make out it’ll be though. i get the impression they’re protesting a little too much.

but yeah, 19 laps behind the safety car, that early in the morning? no thanks.

Well, Malaysia would have bene good, but what I would love to see is a Hot, Haze, Humid Monaco, absolute scorcher of a Thursday, Saturday and Sunday morning, with a very localized cold front moving in that just rains steady for 10 minutes, just long enough to get rid of all that junk that the racers call “grip” and displaces all the oil that in the ashphault to the surface of the track, but leaves the marbles on the track. Due to this shower I also want the tempereature to drop enough so that there is a bit of an onshore fog around the new chicane and swimming pool sections, and the engines just get to develop a little more power for the drivers to handle. And finally, I want this shower to be over five minutes before the start of the race and bright sunhine again so that the driver have a nice slick track to race on dry settings with.

let us have those F1 driver earn their paychecks!
