Inside Track - Bahrain

Sidepodcast TV logo

One year on from our very first Formula 1 race preview video, and Sidepodcast looks at the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix.

The asphalt may not have changed much this year but the cars certainly have. Driving without traction control on this dusty surface will be a leap into the unknown for many of the teams, so let Christine guide you through the twists and turns of this Hermann Tilke designed circuit, to see what the drivers have in store.

Special thanks to Allianz SE, Toyota Motorsports GmbH, Red Bull Racing, Honda Racing F1 and RTV GmbH for the use of their video footage and photographs.

seems to work okay for me. are you getting an error or a blank screen?

it’s going up to youtube and dm right now. probably take about an hour to appear (60mb has to go up twice and then get encoded by each site).

ian, looking at the source code from your site, it appears your site’s publishing platform is removing about 90 percent of the embed code.

any idea what the backend is running (wordpress, drupal etc)?

the odd thing is our video embed code is the same as the f1 minute embed code, and i can see that’s running just fine on your site.

I’m not too fond of Bahrain. It does have a decent track layout, but most of the run-off areas are the size of a small country so any poor driving isn’t punished. It also lacks any interesting scenery (unless sand is your thing) and to quote Mark Webber: “It’s like driving round Heathrow with some cones thrown in”

Prediction: Ferrari white-wash, as long as the reliability is there!

The same - the rest is still missing.

    Here’s a poem I wrote.

Let it rain, let it rain!
    Let it rain in Bahrain!
It will go down the drain!
Let rain. And again am I still
    On a plane???

It never rains in Bahrain or wot?

p.s. I was thinking, you guys need to sign a sponsorship deal, maybe with a company which produces hand cream or something.

Imagine: “Got blisters on your fingers from endless posting on Sidepodcast.com - try Lanosil Super F1 Edge, 1 000 posts a day guaranteed.”

I don’t know if it’s because of the sand, but there is something about it that is very bland.

    Me/Christine/Guys and Gals,

    I spotted this today:

    http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2008/4/7579.html

Where the F1 drivers are scheduled to meet fans with three day tickets during the weekend for an autograph and yap session.

Most of the drivers are in pairs, working usually with their teams.

However: Lewis is the final driver: on his own, meeting the fans immediately prior to the race set up on the Sunday.

I’m sure there must be an entirely normal, non conspiratorial reason for this, but selecting one driver out: to meet fans: when IMO, they should have nothing on their minds but the race: seems a little odd to me.

the only thing that comes to mind, is they’re all contractually obliged to do this but lewis has other commitments already. too busy for the GPDA, etc.

maybe they said “well you’re not doing nothing before the race, so you can do it then instead”?

“He is going very well despite the results. He went very well in Australia and Malaysia until retirement. In this respect I think he will be the surprise of the season.”

Okay, this helps to answer my question from a couple of days ago. I wanted to know why there wasn’t a link on the initial post to the youtube/other outlets so I could click through from my RSS feed (I try to save the bandwidth at work - the least I can do if I’m watching F1 videos on their time!). Now I realise that you don’t submit it to YouTube prior to posting the story. I will just have to continue to search your YouTube ‘channel’ to see the vid.

Living in New Zealand means that it is already up there, and all the ‘teething’ problems are ironed out, before I get to read the stories anyway.

    Thanks for a great show.

just had that exact conversation with christine. i thought he might’ve been referring to the ROC.

it’s a reuters piece syndicated to autosport, so we can’t even blame bad journalism in this instance.

we can certainly add links after the fact, once they’re up. but we’re currently looking into some alternate solutions in case they offer something more integrated.

we try to put the very best quality versions of the video on this site, but there’s a very apparent need for speed and ease of access too.

Lewis is also the only driver that doesn’t have a set length or finish time, I’m guessing he was put last because a lot more people want to meet him to get his autograph, If he’s by himself any driver paired up with him won’t have to sit there with no one queuing up to talk to him due to them all being in the queue for Lewis. Plus with no set finish time Lewis can stay as long as he can without holding up the next session.

Drivers should be used to talking to people just before getting in to the cars due to all the sponsors that have to meet and interviews their do just before hand, so meeting fans should be a nice change for them.

PS, Christine and ‘me’ The video worked fine for me, and worked fine via the iTunes download. Fantastic editing by the way, really looked like a fully produced, TV quality show, Great work. One question Christine, why do you stand so side on to the camera? It would be fine if you where more to the side of the frame but your fairly near the center, it may look a little more natural if you turned a little more square on, about half way between where you are in this video and facing straight on.

I’m not just saying this at random, I spent 5 year working in the Media departments of 2 colleges showing students how to film video and record audio, plus I was just wondering.

Although that is true, you have to remember that not everyone who comes across these SidePodCast videos on YouTube, DailyMotion etc may not, at that time, be F1 fans, so will not have a clue what Christine is talking about unless she spends a little time going over the results.

It’s one of the things that makes SidePodCast one of the best F1 blogs/podcast around, they don’t just aim for the hard core fans with the detailed technical info, they also cover the basics for the casual web stumbler who just came across them and may have never watched F1 before.

Personal I like them going over the results again as I have a really bad short term memory so seeing the result helps me to understand want Christine is talking about later on. But that may just be me

fair point. the only thing i’d say to counter that, is the audience figures for these videos are massive. certainly compared to our audio podcasts or even F1 Rewind.

therefore, to an extent, we have to target the “casual” fan more than we usually would. and as christine often makes reference to the state of the championship throughout the show, it would be unfair to assume an intimate knowledge.

as a quick example, some current youtube stats:

Inside Track (Malaysia) = 15,306 views
    F1 Rewind #2 = 375 views

now, i know inside track was released a full week before rewind, and there are probably loads of mitigating factors as to why one was significantly more popular than the other.

it is a tough balance between insulting an audience and losing them, so all feedback along these lines is a brilliant help, but i’m pretty confident we need some kind of ‘refresher’ to start the show off.

my fault. this week i held the script a little off-center. if christine was more to the right, where she normally stands, she’d be looking over the viewers shoulder.

So that’s why it looked a little odd this week, Christine was just standing in the wrong place, but don’t you Gaffa taped Christine’s feet to the floor so she stood in the right place?

    Christine and “me”

I think I have proven myself to be a “little more “hard core”, than the average intelligent F1 fan,” (I admit I had to really dig deep to find the “Spirit” team data) but actually I like the full rundown on the race results and both championship series. Sometimes the TV feeds will break to other programmes and not get a chance to update the standings, and with my beloved Montreal Canadiens Hockey team in the playoffs, and baseball season now starting (Boston Fan here…), plus work and a few hobbies and recruiting others to bring old basement-dweling F1 teams to the Sidepodcast League, I am a little thinly spread here.

I kind of depend on Sidepodcast to keep me abreast of the “quickie” information and if I want to find futher details (like why Button was dead last) then I will look at either http://www.BBC.com or http://www.f1.com for more details but they are both usually pretty slow on my main computer.

    Not my fault.

However, I continue to argue that I should be facing straight on, because I like the idea that the video is a conversation, and I don’t remember the last time I talked to someone standing a bit skewed.

the background normally counters where you stand (see the flag coming from left in malaysia preview). this week i messed up, and the flag filled the whole background, so two things worked against you this week.

but look at the malaysia video again and you’ll see the composition is good.
