Today we’re looking at the tyre options and how they affect the amount of data teams have gathered, whether anyone will really have an advantage over anyone else, and the teams trying to improve their qualifying results.

They want MM’s head. As I (and everybody else, ha-ha!) predicted… When then? I’m betting 0,50 € on MM resigning in the next couple of weeks.

A subject that interests me greatly: http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2008/0/517.html
This became a hot topic last year, since part of the information at the heart of the McLaren ’spy scandal’ was supposedly related to Ferrari’s use of a particular mixture of inert gases, in particular CO2, to inflate their tyres. This year almost all teams are experimenting with different blends of gases (air, nitrogen and CO2 are all permitted) in a bid to negate the negative impact of the ban on traction control and engine braking control. The removal of these systems means more wheelspin at the rear and more locking up under braking at the front, which in turn leads to more sudden variations in tyre surface temperature. These sudden variations make it more difficult to keep tyre pressures constant - crucial to the car’s handling - hence teams are seeking the gas blend whose pressure is the least sensitive to temperature changes.
CO2 - is good for you!

A Statement from the Honda Racing F1 Team
“It is necessary that senior figures in sport and business maintain the highest standards of conduct in order to fulfil their duties with integrity and respect.”
“The Honda Racing F1 Team is extremely disappointed by recent events surrounding Mr Mosley and we are concerned that the reputation of Formula One and all its participants is being damaged.”
and http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/66297
Speaking to Reuters, Mosley said: “Given the history of BMW and Mercedes Benz, particularly before and during the Second World War, I fully understand why they would wish to strongly distance themselves from what they rightly describe as the disgraceful content of these publications.
“Unfortunately, they did not contact me before putting out their statement to ask whether the content was in fact true.
“No doubt the FIA will respond to them in due course as I am about to respond to the newspaper in question.”
Mosley has indicated that he is preparing legal action against the News of the World for invasion of privacy over the report in last Sunday’s newspaper.

If Honda uses CO2 then their green campaign is rubbish, they must produce CO2 on purpose for their F1 cars… It’s a bit of joke really.

There is of course, the every “green” way of putting 5% CO2, 16% oxygen, 74% nitrogen and 1% other gases by exhaking into the tyres to inflate them. And I am quite sure you vary the temperature of the gases based on profession. Whether its Honda’s PR people or drivers that has the most “Hot air” is yet to be seen.

Actually I’m more interested in racing now. 0,01 € on Sato (not winning, finishing in the points).

as i just commented on ollie’s site, max’s response to the teams was potentially lethal:

Non, BOL,
I fervently hope that “crash” Sato finds something else to do in life other than F1 racing. I think he’s an incompetent fool and a danger on a racing track which should be populated by F1 professional drivers.
Me,
“i’m not sure that is the final nail.”
I don’t usually gamble, I have too many horror stories about the wastage and damage it does: but I think I would probably bet ten pence on MM going. He’s toast. He cannot do his job, when doors are closing on him and he does not have the confidence of the folks surrounding him. His position is completely untenable.
I’m raising a glass of Champagne to good old honest Ron, and having a good snigger at the miserable old git’s discomfort. Oh how are the mighty moral fallen.
Eddie Irvine would be a perfect man for the job.

Dan,
Great story: who’d have thunk Honest Ron was a Samurai underneath that shrewd business suit?
Those guys were some fierce fighters, they must have been fearsome to be around.
I have a question for you: what is the name of the short sword? I know the long sword is known as a Katana, but I can’t remember the name of the short sword.

April 3rd, 2008 at 6:19 pmDan Brunell said:
The short sword was called a wakizashi
That along with the katana were worn together as an indication of the samuari class in Japan during the Tokugawa Period (1615-1868.) The Wakizashi was a about 30ish cm long with a single curved blade. It was use mostly for ceremonial use and when a samurai was indoors since the larger Katana blade was harder to maneuver inside confined spaces.

Is there any update on the fantasy racers from one of the other Dan about who is best worse to have? I think I am starting to take this a little too serious because I was breaking down the point totals from last year into a table before I got frustrated and wondered if someone has already done it.
BTW: Also, you have less than 24 hours to get your teams in.

I was wrong, young Lewis also says he wants MM’s blood or head??? Whatever!
I think the teams set this whole thing up, I mean Max was getting on their nerves big time. He punished Honda in 2005, mass damper affair got on Renault’s nerves in 2006, 2007 Macca trial was absolutely unfair. I think they got together and said ‘OK, last year it was McLaren but he can do it to any team on the grid, the guy’s a danger.’ Somebody must’ve tipped somebody about his idea of having fun and they caught him with his pants down.
Not sure I have anything against Sato other than I don’t know why he’s still in F1, he’s not bad at what he does but not terribly good either. Sato was on fire until 2005, I hear he then had personal problems - personality crisis or family issues the Osbournes style - and he’s too calm now. I prefer his younger version - Nakajima. One thing that bothers me is his earnings - he’s filthy rich, he makes like 10 million bucks per season, incomprehensive.
Yeah, Irvine for the FIA president - that’s nice. Joe Saward says national federations won’t act like silent lambs at the FIA General Assembly. We’ll see but countries hosting GPs won’t approve his presence and it’s the worst thing that’s already happening to Mad Max. That’s a laugh, one of F1 bosses is not allowed on the grid!!! It reminds me of how Johnny Rotten & CO were shown the door by EMI and then A&M, it’s circus, car companies spend a lot of cash on F1 and Super Mario says BMW won’t back down from its morning statement. Cheerio Mad Max!

Good God! A self-respecting Samurai would sooner be caught with five “ladies of the night” than with a a wakizashi. That’s a merchant’s weapon!
The Samurai’s short sword is actually called a Kodachi, which has a the slightly longer and quite wide blade in comparison to a wakizahi, remember remeber a Kodachi is designed to block a Kitana, whereas a Wakizashi is a decoration that says that your better at balancing books than balancing blades.
Japanese society was divided into four Classes, the Samurai being the top, the merchants bring the absolute bottom. The Imperial Court did not count as they were Gods., and thus above mere mortals. A fith class was placed below merchants called “Gaijin” which is foreign people.

I’m sorry if this sounds overly defensive, but I really can’t stand when people resort to completely irrelevant things that happened in a past that doesn’t matter anymore. Like Mosley did refering to WWII.
Taku’s shaken off the reputation of unnecessary crashes, and to be honest I don’t think he’s had particularly more of those than any other driver out there. Even pre 2006.

Jordan,
I was in Japan on a murder inquiry years ago, and I recall with horror travelling on one of those fasto trains and having at least four people spit on the ground when they saw me, calling me “Gaijin”.
I think they are a bit better about things now, but there is an odd attitude to furriners, and “garlic eaters”:)

Not to digress from F1 even more;
Jordan, you are technically right that they samurai used the Kodachi and that the Wakizashi was primarily a “show” sword (along with most katana’s.) However you got it backwards, the Kodachi was a sword that did not exceed the blade length limits (of about two feet) so people that were not in the samurai class could carry it. Both the Wakizashi and Kodachi were used as the second sword interchangeably. the rule stated that they carry two swords to signify rank, it didn’t state which swords they could carry (outside they could carry blades longer that two feet.) The sword you might be thinking of is a chisakatana which is a shorter version of a katana with a shorter blade and about the same grip and hilt as the katana. However that wasn’t used as a “second” sword since it was also impractical inside buildings.
Remind me never to reference Japanese history in this space again… I think people are falling asleep out there…
Back to F1… Is anyone surprised that Ferrari and McLaren have stayed relatively quiet on this matter? I think Ron and McLaren are content with sitting back and enjoying. However, Ferrari silence is interesting. Are they afraid that they are going to screw Todt chances if they speak out? I’m trying to figure that part out.

On a different blog somebody asked “What motivates people like Sato?”
So I wrote something like this.
Hmm, did you know Sato earns like 10 million $ per year? If I were him I’d be motivated like super motivated! Ha-ha! That’s the best damn thing that could happen to any of us, no pressure, you’re a wealthy Japanese F1 driver with 1 podium finish in your CV, you have no real future or chance to win anything but you’re doing great! Now that’s heaven!

Dan,
No surprise: Max has been one of their biggest supporters down the years: no one will ever convince me that the punishment handed down to McClaren was anything other than based on his personal hatred of Ron: and Max’s craven support of Ferrari.
Ferrari are dreading a level playing field if MM goes and Todt doesn’t get the seat. It’ll be a disaster if Todt gets it.

Sorry about the bad grammar in the previous post.
I bet Max is playing this out for a big settlement check from Bernie and the FIA at this point. If he doesn’t realize that he is a goner, then he is a lot more of an idiot than I ever realized. Then again he did allow someone to videotape him while… you know.
Bernie, the FIA, and Ferrari are playing a dangerous game here. For Bernie, there has to be enormous pressure from the investment groups to get rid of Max because the bad press and the potential harm his now tarnished reputation could cause to revenue. How far down is Bernie willing to go with Max? It will not to the end.
For the FIA, how legitimate will they look with a perpetual punch line running their organization? That is obvious. For Ferrari, there are a lot of teams on the grid that are really resentful of them. This could provide them with ammunition and motive they need to regain some control they lost. Also, if Ferrari tries to game this to get Todt, they we might see some very serious threats for a new series like we did a few years ago.

Discussing proper Japanese Swords in F1 will be become critical when Mad Max escapes scott free and the Heads of Honda and Toyota will have to fall on their swords…literally… as part of Max’s vengence campaign….
That’s why I am saying it wil be the merchant’s Wakizashi that will be used…. namely because most Samsurai descents and their weaponary are no longer in Japan anymore, and the good stuff, is no longer made…

Q: (Ralf Bach - R & B) A question for every driver: do you have any opinion about Max Mosley’s party last week and about the discussions since?
Heidfeld: Nothing I want to share with you.
Hamilton: Same.
Trulli: No, no comment.
Rosberg: Nothing.
Q: (Ed Gorman - The Times) Lewis, you said you didn’t like deep water. Are you frightened of being eaten by a shark?
Hamilton: You see all those Discovery channels when the bloody shark jumps up, eats whatever’s floating on the top. I just don’t fancy being in that position.

Has Hamilton-mania reached the point that they ask questions as stupid as this? Really come on. That is almost to the low level of intelligent reporting of when a couple of years ago, a reporter asked me, “If we (the association I work for) were going to replant the 40-foot Noble Fir we donated to the state capitol for Christmas?” I laughed till I realized that she was serious… followed by an endless awkward silence.
Next year, I hope a team brings back the old Jordan shark nose just to mess with him.
