Bahrain: Free Practice 1

After a two week break, F1 returns to the track. Much has been said off the circuit these past seven days, but for now we’re offered a brief respite from all the politics, as cars and drivers take to the asphalt once more.

So, what delights do we have in store today then? First up, it goes without saying it’ll be dry but dusty. The track tends to be reasonably grippy from the off, but given the copious amount of run-off area, we can expect plenty of excursions and spins as drivers find their personal limits.

The session starts at 10am local time (8am BST), and will last for 90 minutes. ITV are broadcasting the session over the net, while the official Formula 1 site offers live timing data.

Please do shout if you are up and about at this slightly more friendly (at least in Europe) time of the day. We’ll be around for both the sessions today, and as ever we try and feature the best of the comments during the podcast round up later today.

Finally, we have a new server in place after the last one struggled through the Malaysian GP, and it’s a lot faster. However yesterday it did suffer some minor connectivity issues which meant it vanished for up to 30 seconds at a time before returning as if nothing had happened! Apologies if it gets annoying, the hosting company are aware of the situation.

Seeing that shot of Fisichella just made me realise something. Force India’s just like BAR was back in 1999 - new team (sort of) with loads of money, but just hanging around the back of the field. It’s amazing to think that teams like FA and also Toyota have these massive budgets, yet when it comes to the crunch, they’re off the pace, so they try to make it better by throwing money at the problem. It does seem to be paying off for Toyota at last, though. Their car is better this year and more competitive. If they can get the car as good as they had in 2005, scoring podiums and the like, they’ll be on to something.

From the number of wet races they think we will see this year, and the lack of TC. For some reason they think Button will cope better than other drivers.

    just comparing FP1 in malaysia…

in FP1 two weeks ago BMW were off the pace, and they were again in FP2. roberg did well in 1 but badly in 2. button did a lot better in FP1 compared to this week.

so… the top four probably won’t feature nico, bmw will continue to start well but drop back, expect trulli to be up there somewhere and if STR can solve their issues, vettel might make top 10 too.

Just adding on that ADAC comment about Mosley - since when is it any of their business? In fact, how is it anyone else’s business other than the FIA’s and Max’s. Why the teams are getting involved when there’s a race weekend happening is beyond me. I would just let Max and the FIA sort it out with themselves and have everyone else keep out of it and focus on things more important to the teams - like racing, for example.

These days, F1’s too politically affected, in some cases it’s not a sport. It’s just a business that full of money, scandal, lies and controversy. It was never like this 10 years ago, when racing was actually the main part of F1.

So what Max got off with some Russian hookers? Who cares? Let the FIA and Max sort it out themselves and please leave the racing to be the main focus instead. I’m not sticking up for Max, by the way, this is just my opinion on the matter. I might be wrong, I might be right, it depends on what people think. At the end of the day, what’s happened has happened, so leave the teams and anyone not directly associated with F1 out of it.

  194. April 4th, 2008 at 10:42 amme said:

At the end of the day, what’s happened has happened, so leave the teams and anyone not directly associated with F1 out of it.

the main problem is, the anti-semitic inferences made in max’s video. as you can imagine people tend to take issue with such things.

max hasn’t denied that it happened, neither has he claimed the video evidence had been faked or doctored in any way.

that leaves everybody to believe what appeared to be going on was going on, which is why you have both german and both japanese teams making statements and now the national motorsport body of germany weighing in too.

max’s response to the teams yesterday was also incredibly stupid and has bound to have ruffled feathers around the motorsport world.

he should not be in charge of the fia right now. he has the right to clear his name (if he’s able to), but in the same way coughlan was suspended from mclaren last year, awaiting further investigation, the same should happen to max today.

  195. April 4th, 2008 at 11:46 amJourneyer said:

But ADAC IS a member of the FIA, and they voted for Max as president, therefore, it IS their business to talk to their president.

Why are the teams involved? Because they too are part of the FIA. Therefore, it’s THEIR business too.

Now have your say...
