Bahrain: Free Practice 2
Moving swiftly on then. After a short break, Formula 1 cars return in anger for Free Practice 2. Again, as it’s Friday it’ll be a 90 minute session, this time starting at 2pm local time (12pm BST).
We didn’t learn a lot from FP1 that we couldn’t have surmised for ourselves. The circuit clearly suits the Ferrari’s, with Massa looking particularly comfortable and leading a large part of the first session. McLaren appear to be playing catch up, but as they didn’t take part in any pre-season testing that’s to be expected.
BMW, specifically Heidfeld, ended up farther back than was expected, while Honda looked to be playing it extremely cautiously. Excluding Super Aguri (who may as well have not bothered turning up), Barrichello managed the least number of laps with only 12 tours of the track.
ITV will very kindly be broadcasting pictures online, although their efforts earlier were frankly laughable, we’re hoping to see a bit more than a blank screen this time round. Live timing is as always… available.
Do say “hi” if you’re around, Christine has decamped to her office and may not be able to see visuals, so we’ll be her eyes for this session.

April 4th, 2008 at 1:34 pmSteven Roy said:
I heard or read they were compacted sand but you can see tyre tracks every time someone has gone off. They are a few mm deep and then there is something solid as a base.
For a run off to work it either has to be all loose like gravel or sand or sealed like tarmac. An F1 car with 4 wheels locked up would slow on either but that run off did nothing
April 4th, 2008 at 1:34 pmScott Woodwiss said:

did it? oooh. well (mt) have an alert out to say they’re experiencing intermittent outages. yesterday it was flaky but i thought today all was well.
we can’t solve that issue, they’re just (slowly) working on it. but when it stays up the server feels faster to me.

Just left a voice message for you guys about free practice 2
I do get a little confused near the end about Nakajima

i’d agree with that. radio5live suggested he was a little bit rattled after kovi’s malaysian performance. we’ll have to see how that pans out.

i don’t know about anyone else, but i especially enjoyed the last 10 minutes of that session
we’ll be hanging around for a bit longer (in truth we never really leave) and then it’ll be the same again tomorrow morning for FP3 and then qualifying.
thanks again one and all for joining in, as ever it makes the coverage really enjoyable. don’t forget to check out christine’s podcast later on today when she wraps up the days running in her friday show.

another non-racing, but important, aside… ed gorman’s quote regarding max earlier today:
that’s pretty much what we’ve been expecting too. whether it be more info from the same event or a different episode altogether, if he was followed for two weeks, who knows what else was discovered?

Hi guys!
Promising Friday, young Lewis is nervous again?
Couldn’t post during the session - was busy. And it’s damn hot right now in Portugal, probably as hot as in Bahrain so I’m feeling lazy, I need to buy enough supplies of Red Bull or a cheaper substitute to keep me going thru the weekend. And ice!

Scott, your voicemails are wonderful!! More please
Have included edited highlights in today’s F1 Digest, and we’ll probably discuss other bits in the Sunday show as well.
(Had to edit, cos your second voicemail was longer than the F1 Digest show itself
Love it!!)

Jordan,
No one uses wheelguns any more:) (gun nut phrase)…. nowadays Clint would use a Desert Eagle .50.

I do admire the way she kept the pistol pointing down the range:)
I do think that we should call him something. I’m thinking of awarding a prize for the best name.
Join me brothers and sisters in the righteous struggle to insist upon proper nomenclature for our techboy!

Well, how’s this for a moniker for “me”
“The Geeky Guy with With No Name”….
“Claude”
If anyone knows the horsepower or Power done by a human heart, we can can copy Ferrari old trick of naming F1 cars. IN this case “me” would become:
“SPCR (Side Pod Cast Racer) 2008 4-valve V-8….
This way Christine will have alot of car-related jokes to toss at “me”.
Yogurt ==> The Yoda paradoy from Mel Brook’s moive “Spaceballs”.
Christine’s “Super Best Friend” (From Speed Television nickname of “Super Aguri”
Or Grip or Grippy. From the title of people who push the cameras and dollies around at movie/TV Show sets ==> “the Grips.”
Or finally “Schaffer” <Clint Eastwood’s character name from the movie Where Eagles Dare”, as right now, Sidepodcast F1 DOES seem to be an “All-British Operation”….
Jordan.

Jordan,
Nice new autobiography:
Er, Christine is German, I’m sure I’ve seen her in lederhosen, banging spoons about:)
Claude will be a fine name for the techfiend, he reminds me of Claude Lebel, dangerous, quiet and gets his man in the end:
yes: excellent……..CLAUDE!

Well, if she is German, she will not have too much of a problem saying “Schaffer”, right? And if that is the case, well, just I gonna start working on that tunnel out of the “Kooler” that I just placed myself in….
Funny: how no-one can really take any credit of rcertain ideas. I picked “CLAUDE” because out of the four ghosts from PAC-MAN, because I can not remeber one of them, SUE, would not work and PINKY just did not sound right….
Darn, OI was just about to suggest “GoFer” (Go fer this, G0 for that” too!
Jordan.
