Bahrain: Qualifying

What do we have in store for Qualifying today then? Firstly sun and sand, there’s no prediction of bad weather all weekend, unless of course you count blustery wind blowing cars around (and more sand onto the track).

Free practice three gave us a good indication of what to expect today, the McLaren’s were off colour, as was Nick Heidfeld, but Nico showed us that Australia wasn’t a one off event.

Do Renault have an answer to their problems, and can they do anything to convince Alonso that Ferrari isn’t the right way to go? Thus far, things have not been looking good at all.

We’re watching ITV’s coverage (which is also online if you can convince them you’re in the UK), and don’t forget live timing from f1.com (as if you could). Please give us a shout if you’re around and tell us how and where you’re watching.

Also, please do let us know your predictions for today’s qualifying event.

It certainly was, although I am less enamoured by the racing there these days!!

Interestingly, they sold all that good stuff, a top cruise, dinner with the captain, meet Murray Walker, and a free Grand Prix programme.

I’ve seen the official programmes, and they are nothing to write home about. I wouldn’t be using them to try and sell a competition, for sure.

    Scott,

I was a guest of my merchant banker girlfriend at Monaco some years ago. We were in one of the nicer hotels, and we were stood on the balcony with the rest of her outfit, drinking wine about 80 feet above one of the corners.

The shriek and the visuals as F1 cars went round streets we’d been driving on a few hours before was surreal and as scary an experience as I can imagine.

Monaco is carp on telly: but in the flesh, its summink else.

This track is situated in a hot climate, therefore it will have more of a degradation effect on the tyres. If the tyres are degrading more, the line rubber is going to increase quicker. That means anyone who waits for a bit in Q2 could and should have a little advantage due to the extra grip.

Meanwhile, le Seb says his chances of making Q3 are not-existant. Yeh, fill your team with confidence, why don’t you?

Yeah, it’s dropped from 46c down to 39c, but the air temp has stay more or less the same, 30c down to 28c. Wind speed has increase to gusts of 6.1mps (13.5mph)which must be cooling the track down.

I agree, driver’s have no idea when they are going around the corners as to why the yellows are being waived, so to ignore them is just stupid, look at what happened in Brazil a few years ago, last corner of track, one or two cars hit the barrier and then another came flying round at full speed under yellow, hit something on the track and eneded up having a massive crash agaisnt the wall.

I’ve always been an F1 “widow” since Lotus went away… after watching BMW these first three races and some cool things they have done over the last few years (the Nurburgring run for example,) I am really considering them as “my” new team. I can’t find a reason not to like them.

I support the BMW Sauber (originally when it was Sauber cos they we doing some good promo like raising AIDS issues in Botswana). Of the the team principles I like Mario since he is level headed and appears to be fair to his driver and other drivers and times. Admittedly he was not hugely complementary on the kinky Max’s latest parlour shananagins. My other favourite teams are Honda (I am an ecologist/environmentalist) and Renault.

He didn’t have a lot of room to slow down enough, as long as he lifted even a bit I’m sure that would have been enough.

The problem with overtaking on the straight is trying to stop at the end, off line is so dirty that the tyres just pick it all up when going of line, and the more dust on the tyres the less grip they have for stopping. The wings give enough downforce at high speed on the straights to over come this problem, but below 100mph, the wings don’t really do much, so slowly down that last little bit in order to get around the corner is going to be the fun bit to watch.

I think we are going to see lots of cars going wide after overtaking due to the dust and sand off-line.

No. There were four Jordan victories in thier life. The winners were “Hurryin’ Heinz” Frentzen, Damon Hill, and Giancarlo Fisichella. I do know who got the fourth win but I think Frentzen got the second some were. The best was Hill’s as it was a Jordan one-two with Raflie Schumacher begin order by Jordan over Team Radio to to stay 3 seconds behind Hill at all times or else look for a job. This was because Schumacher had earlier decided to crash into Hill and take himself out while being in 1st and 2nd in a previous race that same year.

Simple: KImi’s been learning from the master. A nice little “Schumacher Chop” off the starrt to take the inside and when Hamilton takes the outside keep going striaght so either Hamilton brakes or goes off the track.

Assuming Hamilton does not beach it that should put Hamilton down in P22 or somewhere around there….

Also: from my memory of last and this year: Hamilton is regularly a pretty fast starter. I’m not forecasting, but it would not surprise me at all to see Hamilton either first or second after the first corner.

However: that could also be a highly combustible first corner.

By the way, if anyone wants to try their hand at F1 management, I can strongly recommend an F1 management PC game called Grand Prix World. It starts in 1998 with Schumacher, Hakkinen, Villeneuve, etc. plus some made up non-f1 drivers with names like Dario Laureti and Pierre Raimbeaux, lets you manage a team until 2007, if you manage to make it that far.

I only started playing it again recently and decided to try managing Minardi and building it up. I started with $800,000 in the bank at the start of 1998, but by the end of 2007, I’d taken the small Italian minnows from Faenza to 2 drivers and 3 constructors championships. I had works deals with Mercedes-Benz, Shell and Bridgestone and Ralf Schumacher and Olivier Panis on board. Money wise? At one point, I had around $62 million.

For a game that at times comes across as entirely unrealistic, it can and does become very addictive to play through. All major aspects of F1 are catered for, from sponsorship deals, car design and repairs, to hospitality, product licensing, team orders and testing. At times, you can be struggling through with an average car and below-par drivers, but with enough work and effort, you’ll be winning championships and securing big money deals and top drivers.

If you’re interested in this game, a quick search on eBay has a few copies up for sale for just a few pounds. Also, if you feel the game could do with freshening up, a search for “Grand Prix World updates” on Google can give you access to season updates as recent as this year - that’s right, you can up date your version of GPW to become GPW 2008!

I give this game a rating of 10/10, but a word of caution: If you’re using either XP or Vista, you will need to download a special patch that allows you to play the game on such operating systems. But once that’s in place, you’re free to begin your quest for world championship glory!

    Thank you, please. :P

True, but the whole idea of the “Schumacher Chop” is to use the advantage provided by being stopped a few meters in front of the car one position down on you to cut across the lower positionly placed car’s nose. Either the guy behind you breaks slightly so that the person in front cuts you off or there a multiple car pile up before the race offially starts for them.

Okay, so maybe KImi can not really make this “Schumacher Chop” work in Bahrain, but if Massa’s car is pointed slightly to the left at the end of the formation lap, this could get intersting for Hamilton….Especially if KImi dives to right at the start.

Hey I remeber my history. I said that Jordan won four races with, Hill, Frentzen, and Fisichella, and I deduced that Frentzen won the forth. Belgium ‘99 was the Jordan 1-2, as Eddie Jordan was screaming at Ralf Schumacher to maintain station, do not think of passing Hill or else start looking of a job.

Now as to Brazil 2003, I think Button passed Fisichella for the lead, and shotly afterwards there was a monsoon and something like four cars where beached at the “Senna S” and it got to the point where the race was red flag as it was deemed to dangerous to drive. The races was past 3/4 distance, so was booked an offical race, as the two hour time limit would be past before the race could be restarted, and now the part I can not figure out with the GPS systems then in place:

The rules called that if the event where red-flag, they would use the standings at the end of the previous 2 laps before the red flag. As Button pasted Fisichella on the previous lap before the red flag, the results showed that Fisichella was leading on the 2nd to last lap and thus Fisichella and Jordan got their wins.

But as Me/Claude/Me pointed out, maybe it was Kimi who passed Fisichella and maybe am just trying to rattle Christine’s Chain…. I still say it was Button who passed Fisichella.

“KImi’s been learning from the master.”

I really agree with that.. Maybe Kimi has been remembering how Schumi overtakes him in Brasil 2006.. (I cant forget that moment) Kimi will just play for few laps hide & seek but.. in the moment when Hamilton is dreaming about his next podium.. he will just see Kimi´s dust..and finally Podium for both Ferraris

And then the Ferraris will play soccer with Schumi with a grey metallic ball..

stretching my brain muscles here a bit, but didn’t button fly off the road and nearly take out schumi’s legs?

i think he watched the last couple of laps from the sides. long time ago though.

Well, now that Q is done, my cowardly predictions for teh Bahrain 2008 Grand Prix are:

    1st) Kubica
    2nd) Hamilton
    3rd) Raikkonen
    4th) Kovaleinen
    5th) Heidfeld
    6th) Alonso
    7th) Rosberg
    8th) Nakajima
    9th) Piquet
    10th) Button

Button in 10th? Is Christine jetting it to Bahrain with a Blue Flag?

Having checked my memory against the wikipedia article for the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix, let the record state that I was trying to rattle Christine’s Chain… ;)

Compared to being Nakajima’s pit crew, what is so “Extensively courageous” about making fun of Christine’s inability to pick good racing drivers for her virtual F1 team?

It at least gives me a way of covering up my own mistakes (see above) right?

Maybe but if anyone cares to do the research will only have to look at http://www.f1rejects.com to see all the lousy F1 drivers who became excellent drivers in Champcar ==> Stefan Johansson, Danny Sullivan, Christian Fittipaldi, Emerson Fittipaldi, Robet Guerrero, Alessandro Zanardi, and Nigel Mansell

Interesting that you include Nigel Mansell and Emerson Fittipaldi in the category “lousy F1 drivers”. I know what you mean their F1 sell by date had passed and they moved across the duck pond. I suspect the Champcars are more equal across teams and this makes a huge difference. In F1 you are only as good as the team your are in. I am not convinced Hamilton is a faster or better driver than Button. Had Heidfeld been driving Ferrari last year no doubt he would have been World Champion (based on his consistency in point scoring). Alonso looks mediocre this year - but we know him to be a fast driver - he equalled Hamilton on points despite the best intentions of his team to thwart such aspirations. Last year you could only succeed if you were in a Macca or Ferrari, hopefully other teams like BMW Sauber, Toyota, Williams, Honda and Renault will upset things this year. Looking at the grid for tomorrow it is good to see Trulli, Rosberg and Button up there - they are all far better drivers than Massa.

Being part of Nakajima’s pit crew is beyond normal definitions of bravery - I wonder what sort of life assurance policies they have and whether Williams or Toyota contribute to these?

Christine’s choice is a brave one and based on who she likes and considers good irrespective of the machinery they have to work with (my interpretation). I made my team up to score as few points as possible (but having to spend as close to the limit as possible) so Christine will never be last. My team has done well with six drivers selected only two got into Qualifying-2. Mark Webber is the only thorn in the team by providing an embarrassment of riches, but his good luck cannot run for long.

    Rich:

Right now it is really bad in Americna Open Wheel racing, as the two series are still split (which dilutes the field) and the ovals allow the slower cars to slipstream over a few laps to catch up t faster cars. On the road tracks or street circuits, I think they have more or less the same problmes with overtaking as F1 does.

As to “il Loeone” and “Emo”:

Okay, maybe I was being a little harsh to Mansell, but not much, he sure can be labaled “Lousy” for his “awesome” 1994 and 1995 seasons, and somethings wrong when an F1 driver who has not raced in a year was given a race seat five races from the end of the 1992 season. So what if it was Alain Prost? You’re the current World Champion and you are afraid of a Frenchman who has not raced in a year? Come on…. And Mansell should have see that Seena’s offer to drive for Williams for free was B.S., or he was still under contract or soemthing. Williams would have jumped at the chamce to have Senna on board. Or perhaps Mansell was to afraid of Damon Hill? Give me a break, Hill-mania was the Best Comedy rountine since “Monty Python”.

“Emo” became a lousy driver the minute he joined Copersucar, and stayed there for 5 years. (Hey that would make an awesome Sidepodcast virtual F1 team to beat Christine with! apply now! being back “Copersucar”, please!) So all you people who trash JV, please fire some of your artillery Emo’s way for the same reason you trash JV.

Bring in the right car does help in F1, but it is now up to the drivers to learn that they have to start driving beyond the cars limits so that they can make into the top cars. If it worked for Legends like Lauda and Prost, it can sure work for a bum like Massa.

Hoping someone chooses “Copersucar” as a team name for the Sidepodcast League,

    Jordan.
