Bahrain: The Race
Race day is upon us and yesterday’s stunning qualifying lap from Robert Kubica has given Formula 1 some light relief following a week of bad press and controversy. We may have awoken to yet more newspaper allegations this morning, but today is all about the racing.
For the first time Kubica gets to lead the field for the installation lap, and then hopefully into the first corner. He has the advantage of being on the clean side of the grid, and the assumption is he’s running lighter than the cars behind. Whatever happens the first corner and lap will be must-watch-blink-and-you’ll-miss-it television.
Further back we have have Trulli, Rosberg, Button and Alonso all putting their respective teammates to shame. What can they do from back there, and who’ll pick up the last of the points positions? The battle of the midfield is sure to be exciting today.
The UK’s television coverage begins in just a few moments, it’s also online. Live timing screens will hopefully be offering a better service than yesterday.
Please let us know how and where you’re watching as well as any thoughts you have on the build up and the race.

Hi christine.
Just reading on autosport.com, McLaren have said that their position at the beginning of the pitlane is seen as an advantage to them, and I think they’re right. If Lewis and Heikki can run strong today, that pitbox at the head of the pitlane is going to play into their hands when trying to jump Ferrari.

The only way a car would be that slow out of the corner was if either the driver didn’t hit the throttle, or the gearbox was slow changing, as Massa car doesn’t seem to be having any more problems he must of just ‘forgotten’ to hit the throttle. Remember Massa is the driver that thinks kerbs should get out of his way.

Button’s quicker than Hamilton again. Maybe that impact did more to the McLaren than we think it did. Lewis is definately struggling. If it was just the front wing affected, he would be flying back up the order. But even on soft tyres, he’s only making small progress each lap to catch Davidson. I don’t think everything’s 100% with that car.

Brake testing has been around as long as racing. The reason there is so little overtaking in F1 is that it is difficult to follow another car through a corner and pass it on the straight so gaining on a car through a corner to the point where you hit it on the exit is unusual

A lot of that is down to the respective aerodynamic issues of the two formulas. GP2 cars do not generate as much “dirty air” turbulence in their trail as F1 cars do, nor do they need as much downforce for effective steering and braking. Thus GP2 pilots can safely get their machines far closer together in more situations, more often, than their F1 counterparts can.

Fisichella’s putting in a stonking drive, still on the lead lap, unlike Nakajima.
Williams have been gradually falling back since their initial performances in pre-season testing. How much is the Toyota boy holding them back? Fisichella might not be as fast as Rosberg, but he does have experience of developing world championship winning cars. I’ve a feeling Williams might be a little bit further up if they didn’t have a pay driver in the second seat.

Don’t they also run on slicks? which would give far more grip than these stupid grooved tyres that F1 use, I’m glad slicks are coming back into F1 next year.

I’ve heard the same. Thinking about it, that’s more than likely correct. Pantano (in the new GP2 car) was only 1.5 seconds off the pace of the F1 Honda’s during winter testing. Yet the Mecachrome GP2 engine only produces around 580bhp.
So, the speed of the GP2 machinery isn’t coming from their engine, and I very much doubt aerodynamics are responsible (even accounting for the ground effect). Therefore, it does seem likely they’re producing significantly more mechanical grip, to be able to produce similar lap times.

My fantasy racers bet:
Massa - 150 points
Heidfeld - 70
Trulli - 50
Rosberg - 30
All of them finished the race, which makes 57 * 4 = 228
Total: 528
There was still some room for improvement. I believe the best bet would have been Massa, Kubica, Heidfeld and Trulli, making it around 600 points. But I think I managed to be a top 100 now. hehehe

They do run on slicks, which is a positive and makes some difference, but maybe not as much as you’d think.
Bridgestone sometimes provide very hard tyre compounds. If there’s a safety car, we’ve seen drivers make stops as early as lap two (therefore running almost the entire race on one set of tyres), with very little drop-off in lap time.
