F1 Digest - Bahrain GP

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

A relatively tame race compared to the hectic start to the season, but still filled with incidents and observations. F1 Digest will guide you through all the happenings of Sunday in Bahrain.

The Race

Hamilton and Kubica suffer off the start line, whilst the Ferrari romp away with the lead. Button and Coulthard, and old-rivals Hamilton and Alonso have collisions that need a second look.

Conclusions

Finally Massa gets some points on the board, and will be feeling less pressure from here on in. Hamilton is disappointed, whilst Kubica remains steadfastly happy despite losing his pole position. Meanwhile, Button blames Coulthard and Coulthard blames no one.

According to Maurice Hamilton, he states that he has seen the telemetry of Alonsos car when he was hit by Hamilton and there is no indication of brake testing or failure to accelerate.

Looks like Hamilton just had a bad day at the office.

    pat symonds:

“Fernando was coming out of the turn and accelerating down the straight, he reached fifth gear, at 227km/h, on full throttle, no touching of the brakes or anything like that. And you can see on the accelerometer the impact. He got hit from behind.”

we’ll be awaiting an apology from martin brundle in his column next week :)

ITV is incredibly irresponsible, they are promoting a feud between Fernando and Lewis, no wonder Lewis will face a hostile audience at his next race. Here in South Africa no one supports Lewis (despite our reputation of being the rainbow nation). This is ITV over-sell and the fact that he comes over as in-sincere and arrogant. Here Kimi is far and away the favourite driver (I actually know of no-one who he is not their favourite). Other popular drivers being Jenson, Robert and Rubens. Drivers like Webber were popular but they complained too much and thereby lose their popularity (same with Alonso last year… but I think people are starting to now blame a lot of this on McLaren’s unfair treatment of him). There was huge applause when Hamilton lost the championship last year and Kimi won - I was in a pub watching. If ITV want to support Lewis, they need to be more objective and subtle in praising him and credit other drivers like Alonso and Trulli when they are on form.

I went to YouTube and re-looked at the footage of the above incident and this convinced me it was Lewis’s fault and nothing to do with Alonso. On the Alonso issue, I actually feel sorry for him since the Renault is so uncompetitive - even less so than last year!

tis nice. the only issue i have is that truck driving at the beginning might get a little tiring by the end of the season. but it’s nice they’re putting some effort into the sites.

while on this subject i should complain about renault’s site, which although trying to be as cutting edge as rbr, appears to be in a continual state of disrepair. broken isn’t nearly a strong enough word :)

i get the impression that they’ve simply given up caring. bbc have walked away with their contract and now they’re going through the motions.

it’ll get worse when the bbc announce who, if any of the current team, will be taken on.

You could clearly see it was a racing incident, LH was nervous once again and he admitted it himself: “Then I had the incident with Fernando. I was behind him, and I moved to the right, and he moved to the right and that was it - a racing incident I guess.”

No need to make it look like some dirty racing. FA needs points finishes right now and he’s obviously not stupid to cause crashes or block people or whatever. Incomprehensive. Especially when it comes from former F1 drivers.

Yeah, a bit too compicated for my taste, PDF file was simple and efficient and gave a better feeling of how the thing looked in real life. But that’s me so …

Renault website this year seems to undergo changes every day, quite complicated as well, last year it was easier to find stuff there and this division “team site” / “fan site” - not the best idea probably. And fan site has no RSS feed which is a crime these days. Although recently they started offering more team interviews so it’s up to them to decide what to do, I like simple things, that’s all, say grandprix.com / sidepodcast websites. You take one quick look and know where to click. No excess of active x or adobe player or whatever they have these days, I couldn’t care less about it really. And to be honest I hate Facebook but as I said before - I’m a nasty little bastard ready to attack at any time. Only joking! Yeah, but I deleted my Facebook account (Fraggle from RF1 blog sort of dragged me onto Facebook), couldn’t stand it, made me sick: kick Joe in the … / offer Joe a present / serve Nancy a poisonous drink / you can offer Syd a rotten tomatoe, a cake and the Damned cd - total kindergarten. Super wall - nonsense! And they want real names! The whole idea is that in real life you’re like Mark Smith, clerk and here in cyberspace you can be like God Almighty and just preach nonsense.

What else I was going to say???

Racing - all the action today ended after the 2nd lap, disappointing, no direct duels at the front. And KUB managed to go off the track to avoid fighting with RAI for second place near the end. No way I’m gonna be your fan, Robert, you spoiled the race for me. Only HAM was like showing fingers to everybody from Fisi to Sato while overtaking them, I’m now the biggest HAM fan on the planet!

I was very impressed with Felipe Massa in the ‘after match’ conference. He spoke clearly to his critics explaining that as far as “tough times” go, this last week has been nothing. He points out that we all have bad days and that his time spent fighting the odds in Formula Renault etc. have toughed his mettle. I was very impressed with the young man, speaking in a foreign language, able to articulate his thoughts and when dealing with people who ‘talk’ for a living!

ITV F1 = ‘The Lewis Hamilton Appreciation Society’ and biased beyond belief.

Felt a bit cheated that they also didn’t show the post race press conference as I wanted to hear Kimi’s reaction. You know fine that if Hamilton had been on the podium they would have shown it.

Robert Kubica, publicity stunt?.I don’t think so.He is just going to get stronger.
Hamilton/Alonso incident : we all needed to know what the telemetry on Fernados’ car read and it clearly exonerates him of any blame.Lewis lost that race from the start and then made things worse by hitting Alonso. He had a bad race and he can’t afford any more.

ITV losing it’s grip and holding back it’s support for F1 and the ITV teams obsession with Lewis : I agree with everything everyone on this site has said about the subject.Roll on the BBC-F1 program next year and some bloody overtaking. As for Mark Blundel : i think he must have a half arsed look at an old copy of Autosport and then swan in to the race circuit to do his bit with Steve Ryder. He made me feel like i know what i’m talking about when it comes to F1, and that’s not the best bit of news for Mr Blundel.
There, glad i got that of my chest. Yours, Shaun, aka Victor Meldrue…;)
