Heidfeld Loses His Nose

As Christine pointed out on F1 Minute yesterday, Nick Heidfeld brought the BMW factory in Munich to a standstill when he turned up to thank employees for supporting the company’s F1 programme.

During the visit Nick demonstrated the raw power of this year’s F1.08 by throwing it into a wall while doing donuts, losing his front wing in the process. Here’s the obligatory audience video clip:

Actually I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often given the amount of demos the team do in their Pitlane Park. I bet he was a touch embarrassed for a moment there though.

Well, at least it was not a race….

That is a little tight of a space to be doing in? Do not you think?

    How freaking embarrassing.

Couldn’t really go very fast, though, could it? If I was one of the “workforce” I’d rather just get tickets to the Grand Prix.

Reminds me of 2002 Austrian GP, Sick Nick then eliminated poor Sato (cold brakes or something), not much space was there at the first corner of A1 Ring.

i have no recollection of that. what’d he do?

jostik, the video is on youtube, there’s software out there to help you download the files, but personally i’ve never used any of them.

The first Safety Car was caused by the demise of Olivier Panis’s BAR-Honda which blew its engine in dramatic fashion on lap 23. This caused the car to spin down the main straight, fortunately without hitting a wall. The car came to rest in the middle of the road, a highly dangerous situation. The car was tidied away and the race restarted and as the field headed up towards the second corner, Alex Yoong (who was a lap down) locked up his brakes in rather spectacular fashion. Behind him David Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld were side by side.

“I saw a cloud of tire smoke as Yoong braked really hard and early ahead of us,” said Heidfeld. “Maybe I pressed the pedal too hard while the brakes were still too cool. The car got away from me and next thing I knew I was going backwards down the grass.”

The Sauber missed Montoya’s Williams by a fraction (passing just in front of the startled Colombian) and went smashing into the side of Sato’s Jordan. If ever there was evidence that the side-impact tests are needed for F1 cars here it was. The impact was one of colossal force. The two cars ended up in the sand trap and there was widespread relief when Sato was seen to move. But then he stayed in the car and the medical teams arrived. The problem was that the Sauber smashed through the Jordan monocoque in the area of the Japanese driver’s lower legs and the damage made it difficult for Sato to get out. He was bruised and fairly shaken but in one piece. Eventually he stretchered to an ambulance and taken to the medical center and from there he was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Graz for tests.

Hmm, sorry to bother you, ME, but I think my comment sank again, I’m really unlucky this month. I happened to use one link. I’ll try to avoid any links in comments in the future. That’s crazy, a funny situation.

Look Takuma Sato up on YouTube and you’ll find several videos of him minding his own business at the A1 Ring, only to get smashed by Heidfeld, who I think did have a mechanical problem of some sort. For once, Sato wasn’t responsible for a big accident!

I wonder what the BMW numbers folks thought of Heidfeld losing the front wing! Blast it, thousands more down the drain! Ah, well, this is F1…

That front wing didn’t need much of an impact to break off, did it?
You think they use less strong materials for demonstrations such as these? Would make sense I reckon.

    Cheers,

    hey everyone, check this out:

Renault giving free tickets to their World Series events. The British round is at Silverstone, as you can see, and from my personal experience it’s well worth it. You get to see the World Series cars with 3.5l V6 Renault engines that sound soooo good. Also there’s 2.0 FRenaults, the Megane Trophy, which is basically Renault Meganes on steroids, Clios and various demo runs of Renault F1 and Rally cars.

They did this at Donington last year and I can tell you it was the best day of my life. I enjoyed every second of it and if you have time free in June, I would thoroughly recommend getting tickets. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see top class single-seater racing for FREE!?!?

Can you guys recommend some good places to watch at Silverstone? When I went in 2005 for the GP, we spent the duration of the day just before Maggots, which was great, but we didn’t see very much other than the cars flying past.

Are there any other good places to watch the racing from?
