Live Commenting: Spain - Qualifying

And we’re back! It’s an action packed Formula 1 day today, no sooner has practice 3 finished and we’re already looking at qualifying.

The session earlier today was nothing if not inconclusive, with six different teams in the top eight.

It looks like Red Bull’s legendary unreliability came back to bite them again, and they will have had their work cut out readying the car for qualifying. The big guns are clearing keeping their cards close to their chests… has there been any sandbagging going on? How much was achieved at last weeks test?

We’re watching ITV’s television coverage, which is also available online. Don’t forget to keep the official live timing window handy.

Do let us know where you are, how you are and what you’re watching. Also let’s have all your predictions please.

So, may as well get to it - predictions?

I think Ferrari will walk the front row easily. Mclaren will be lucky to keep up, but they were mostly running setup and heavy fuel runs in practice I think. I personally hope Lewis can bounce back :D

BMW look a bit off, but we said that in Bahrain and they grabbed pole, so let’s not judge them too much now. Renault’s managed to make a big leap during the break, I can see both cars in Q3 today. Red Bull have looked pretty decent, I wonder if that throttle problem has hampered Webber somewhat. David’s probably driving for his job right now.

Williams look competitive, sounds like Nico has been battling understeer all weekend, wonder if they’ll have sorted it out. Not sure where Nakajima stands right now. Toyota looked very quick in FP3, probably down to very low fuel runs, practicing for qualifying, me thinks. Honda are running those ridiculous rabbit ears, doesn’t seem to be helping them that much. Also, they’re not running their new rear wing?

Toro Rosso, it seems have had setup problems all Friday, they might have a tough time getting to Q1, and won’t see Q2, I don’t think. Force India had a lucky day yesterday, but it looks like they’ve calmed down somewhat today. They might be lucky to just scrape one of their cars into Q2. And as for Super Aguri…..well….you know what they’ll be up to - nothing much ;)

    Qualifying Prediction:

    Raikkonen
    Massa
    Hamilton
    Kubica
    Piquet
    Alonso
    Kovalainen
    Trulli
    Coulthard
    Glock

yeah, no problem with that. what he didn’t say is they aren’t running 24/7. so the net total isn’t higher than someone else running x2 all day everyday.

Hmm…well, I knew FI needed to make a step-up in the aero department, but I didn’t think they needed it that badly to warrant using 3 wind tunnels!

In my mind there is no doubt that he was light on fuel. Just how light we don’t know. I think he knew he would not really be able to get on the podium, but could get into the top 3 for quali. Probably just wanting to please the many many Alonso fans. But i don’t think we can rule out a leap in performance, the size of the leap will be evident tomorrow. oooo its gonna be exciting!

    Christine,

You clearly haven’t got the rools of marriage down pat yet: have you?

My dear Susan has simply waited till I have been out of the country to appropriate the latest piece of gear/kit/toys that I have just purchased at vast expense.

This includes the latest 24″ inch monitor: I had to go out and get another one.

Getting it back, causes so much hassle, pain and earache its simpler just to obey the rools and let her have it.

All my best kit, I can only keep at the office.

All men are slow at learning this stuff, especially when young and thin, but they get it eventually……

more on the team principles meeting from grandprix.com:

three teams let it be known that they could not sign the letter without first asking permission from the top management of the companies involved. Logically, this would be the two Red Bull teams and Ferrari.

    and also of interest:

Mosley is still deciding whether he wants to fight on or whether he will agree to back down but will be able to manoeuvre a situation in which Jean Todt is named as his successor.

    http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns20293.html

so if the teams push him out they could end with todt at the helm. but if they don’t push him out, they could still end up with todt at the helm.

    some choice.

“Yeah, i am. No chequered flag podcast for Spain so far. I wonders why? ”

    Lou,

Chequered Flag are often late, and to my memory haven’t always produced a mid weekend podcast, only doing the round up at the end.

I _think_ the process is under constant review, and you can bet Auntie BBC is watching what is going on here at Sidepodcast. I know a couple of times last year they had problems with Bernie refusing to allow them to record the cast actually within sound of the track, Renault had similar issues.

It sounds complete idiocy, but so is the fact that it is so hard to get good quality video of races past: when if Bernie: the idiot had a library up somewhere, anyone interested could buy a copy of the DVD of a race for ten quid: he’d make millions, but as it is, a bit here and there on you tube of questionable quality. <Ptui) to Bernie.

    Lou,

Er: I would hazard a guess that if you got auld “ME” up to the bar and fed him a few sherberts in short order, he might wax very lyrical on this subject.

He has to be a bit careful otherwise, because he’s looking for a pit badge one day, but if we got him loaded and turned the mike off………:)

ahaha! yes i bet he would have plenty to say! Oh my ideal f1 commmentry would be ‘me’ in the pits + doing some commentry and Christine in the commentry box with a different person from the blog each week. ;) BUT i love sidepodcast too much!

Now have your say...
