The Spanish race weekend draws to a close with a much more action-packed race than we were expected. Ferrari dominated, but the headlines are full of Heikki. Thankfully everything seems to have worked out, and F1 Digest is here to make sense of the drama.
The Race
Plenty of retirees right off the bat, and scattered throughout the race. Kovalainen’s accident, Barrichello’s front wing nightmare, and Coulthard in more overtaking controversy.
Conclusions
Covering all the teams, starting with those who had a driver DNF, right through to the glorious day had by Ferrari. Also, an update on Heikki’s condition and Ron Dennis’ thoughts on the accident.

Nice job as always.
I thought you’d made my comment up! I found it eventually, but you made out I said it earlier than I actually did. I’m not fussed though, a comment’s a comment
Let’s look forward to Turkey!

i think actually we might hold the usual sunday over until tomorrow, if that’s okay with everybody?
seems a shame to drop this podcast from the top of the list with another that’s not particularly time sensitive. we’ll cover all the weekends gossip and fantasyracers stuff as always, just a bit later.

cheers, it’s just usually we cover all the post race press release stuff in that show, but seeing as digest is bigger, better, more this week, seems like there’s nothing major to add.
am thinking it’s best to wait for more team opinions that come out tomorrow when everyone gets back to their office, than cover the same ground twice.
it would also give us scope to look at things like how the monday morning papers saw the event, which we’ve never been able to do.
lastly (am i selling it to you yet?), we’ll be podcasting 6 days out of 7.
you don’t miss a trick kiddo! still tweaking, the server’s quiet after live commenting so brought it in to test.

Christine, I’d like to ask you something about the music you use, if I may.
Some of the tracks you’ve used in your intros, like Changes in my Lifetime and Keeping up with the race, are actually really good songs. Are these the sorts of songs you listen to, or is your music taste different to that?

Don’t you mean that the whole SidePodCast collection of podcasts puts, the ITV’s, BBC’s and F1 online coverage to shame.
Also have you seem what the IndyCar.com fans can view online? If F1, ITV or the BBC offered online coverage like that I would pay them an extra $39.99 a year.
Talking of payment, You did finally get my donation though the other week didn’t you? and I hope other people have been donating to help pay for the cost of that nice reliable hosting company. I still can’t log in to the admin for my WP sites on DreamHost due to them STILL waiting for the ‘Database Upgrade’ to finish.
Oh, and just waiting for this podcast to finish downloading so I can listen to it on my other computer as I need to reboot this one to see if that will kick start the ‘Database Upgrade’

Great podcast yet again, very happy to hear all of the teams’ reactions to the race.
On the Kovi crash: Dutch coverage gave us some information about the materials (and its characteristics) used to fabricate the wheel rims in F1.
Don’t remember exactly what material it is but what I do remember is that the rims are made out of such light material, teams have actually been known to break them due to the force needed to put the tyres on.
This is what might have happened to Kovi’s wheel today, and Hamilton’s back at the Nurburgring last year.
Yay, edit button!
Cheers!

I second that
Doesn’t the normal Sunday show come out on Monday’s during race weekends anyway?
It would make more sense to hold it over till Mondays if it wasn’t being done like that before, iTunes only auto downloads the last added podcast, so people may have missed the Sunday episode of the F1 Digest during other race weekends due to that.
Also is it just me or did Holly from Radio 5 Live just brush aside Raikkonen’s win as a forgone conclusion
Holly: “We have seem in the last seven races that the pole sitter wins the race, so congratulations” OK it doesn’t look that bad when it type but go and listen to it, 1min 41sec in to CFF1. Not one of her best interviews, maybe she has heard that she hasn’t got the pitlane reporters job with the BBC for next year. She seemed to be just going though the motions and not really interested in talking to Raikkonen, but she did sound a lot more interested when she was talking to Hamilton.

They’re definitely songs I would listen to, I wouldn’t pick anything I didn’t like, because I have to listen over and over again during the editing process
However, I do have to listen for different things when I’m picking a song for a show rather than just for pleasure. It’s got to have a subtle but catchy instrumental section and the lyrics have to be good but not so that you’re upset when I fade them out! This one doesn’t have lyrics which helps

Williams have bought a stake in Automotive Hybrid Power Limited, a company that’s developing high-energy composite flywheels for use with energy recovery systems. This is ahead of the introduction of KERS for next season. Their flywheels can rotate at 10,000rpm.
The company have relocated to the team’s base outside Oxford, and they came from Norwich, where I live!
Smart thinking from Williams there, preparing for the future already.

Scott, this is also telling me that Williams has money now - a lot of it. Or at least enough to make the acquired company move very near to the team HQ.
Question is - how much of it came from Baugur?
Oh, I’ve tested the edit button - and it works perfectly. Brilliant!

Finally, a driver of the people. Why there isn’t more of them in F1 like him (but a bit faster, no offense
), seems a mystery. Maybe because some of them have paychecks bigger than their personalities.
I can understand that drivers get upset when someone holds them up, either accidentally or on purpose, but at the end of the day, they don’t see that scenario from the other guy’s POV, they just expect them to move over easily. I mean fair enough, on a wide track like Silverstone, that’s not a problem. But on tight, narrow tracks like Monaco and Hungaroring, it’s much more difficult. The poor backmarker is doing all he can, yet when the guy lapping him finally gets through, all he gets their fist shaken at him or the middle finger. The guy’s done nothing wrong, yet he gets abuse.
People like DC should know better than that to criticise those kind of drivers. Let’s stick you in a Super Aguri, get a car impatient to get by behind you and see how you like it. I can understand he’s had a difficult season so far, but there’s no need to take it out on anyone else, is there?

Hey, people, did you listen to Renault F1 latest podcast? Steve Nielsen (Sporting Manager) blasted little Nelson big time! And Pat Symonds simply said nothing at all on the subject of his second driver’s performance! I’m excited! Could Piquet really be replaced this year? By Jacques Villeneuve? Yamamoto would be more surreal choice, Sakon for Turkey!

On the topic of NASCAR… three NASCAR drivers I would like to see in Formula One.
Tony Stewart: Positives: Has won in everything he has raced in; has the coolest racing nickname ever “Smoke;” great personality and microphone skills. Negatives: Needs to lose about 20 to fit in a F1 car.
Boris Said: Positives: Great road racer; the hair. Negatives: At 45, way too old.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr.: Positives: Every single American racing fan would get up and take notice of Formula One; would bring a huge, huge following; savvy with sponsors and handling himself. Negatives: I don’t think he is good enough road racer for F1.
