Live Commenting: Spain - The Race

The Circuit de Catalunya isn’t renowned for hosting particularly exciting F1 races. In fact they can be something of a procession at times. This year however, we have a heck of a grid that should spice up the action, if only for the first lap or two.

The drag down to the first corner will hold the key to the remainder of the race. How much fuel does Alonso really have, and are any of the championship contenders willing to go wheel to wheel with him? How much difference the new asphalt in turn one will make is also open to debate. Last year Fernando bounced across the old gravel surface, losing valuable places as he went, whilst this year heading off line will cost a driver considerably less.

Further down the grid there could be some fabulous charges from the back, with both Nico Rosberg and David Coulthard out of position and in faster cars than their grid positions belie. Vettel also must be hoping for a better race than his previous three.

UK television coverage is just starting, so we’ll be glued to our seats for the rest of the afternoon. It’s fair to say we’re unusually excited about this Grand Prix, so please say “hello” if you’re watching. Usually we’d ask for your podium predictions, but along with those, this week we’d like to know your opening lap predictions too!

It depends how brave he is off the line i suppose. I ahve not really paid attention to the renault starts, cause you often don’t really see them.

    Yay! Ross Brawn!

i don’t recall them being special off the line since maybe 2006. last year they weren’t wonderful, and so this year the car has been a bit rubbish in all areas.

of course we have no idea what they’ve achieved in testing.

They used to be brilliant in 2002 and 2003. A good example is Brazil 2002. Both cars were on the 3rd or 4th row, and at the start, they left the McLarens in front of them, standing!

one thing that could be an issue for renault this race is the new front wheel bins. we’ve already seen honda and bmw ditch them (presumably due to problems in pitstop practice).

renault look to be running them today so we should keep an eye on their pitstops.

OK, I’ll be the first to stick my neck out and make some predictions:

First Lap: Raikkonen will outdrag Alonso, but I reckon Fernando will chase him all the way round the opening circuit. Lewis (let’s hope) will get a good start, Massa will stall ( :P ). I think there’ll also be some kind of incident into Turn 1.

    Race Prediction:

    Raikkonen
    Hamilton
    Kubica
    Alonso
    Massa
    Kovalainen
    Trulli
    Piquet

Oh please, please, please let the Button not be involved. He has had some pretty bad luck with the starts this season.

    ok so my race predictions

    Raikkonen
    Massa
    Hamilton
    Alonso
    Kubica
    Kovi
    Heidfeld
Webber/ Trulli (if Webber has any bad luck)

(Hopefully the hondas not far behind)

    first lap prediction:

massa’s job is to swamp ferni, the ferrari team would’ve figured a strategy between both drivers to minimise any renault advantage.

kubica will find some space. the mclarens will get a clean start, but piquet behind will push too hard and take out some people in front.

    podium prediction:

    1- kimi
    2- kubica
    3- kovi

According to Wikipedia: “Humans can survive about 20 to 35 g instantaneously (for a very short period of time). Any exposure to around 100 g or more, even if momentary, is likely to be lethal, although the record is 179 g.”

    So, 100G is unlikely.

I think the record still stands at 128g for David Purley. He stopped from something like 150 mph in 2 and a half feet. The car (what’s left of it) was in the Donington museum

Not really, 100+mph to zero in half a car length will pull pretty high G, if anybody was good at maths/physic’s they could work it out, shame I’m not that good, or at least not that quick, if me a day or to and I may get a there.

Christine is right Purley survived 179.8 G.

This is from Wikipedia but it sounds about right from what I can remember

He returned to F1 in 1977 with his own LEC chassis designed by Mike Pilbeam and run by Mike Earle. It was this car in which he suffered serious injuries in pre-qualifying for the British Grand Prix. He survived an estimated 179.8 G’s in 1977 when he decelerated from 173 km/h (108 mph) to 0 in a distance of 66 cm (26 inches) after his throttle got stuck wide open and he hit a wall.

    So, 100G is unlikely.

Wiki has not heard of Nascar or the large American ovals then, they regular hit the outer wall at 100+G, most of the open wheel race cars that ‘Woman’ races have black boxes that record G’s.

I agree they will look a lot nicer when the FIA ban them for being a movable aero device

we’re going to hang around for just a little bit longer, but with two audio shows and video to work on, we might sneak off a little bit earlier than usual.

do keep commenting post race thoughts though, and christine will have an extra long race podcast up shortly.

considering how bad it could’ve been, we can’t complain.

incident-filled, might be a better description than exciting, but i certainly enjoyed it. especially with the front runners getting around the first corner safely.
