Live Commenting: Turkey - Free Practice 2
Free Practice 1 was something of an odd affair, with track organisers seemingly keen to disrupt proceedings by cleaning two sections of the track just prior to practice beginning. With teams seemingly unwilling to risk running on a part wet / part dry circuit they all opted to stay in the garages until late into the session.
On top of this FOM’s weather data appears to have failed completely, leaving us to peer at the sky for meteorology indications. Bernie owns this track, but you’d struggle to see he’s influence anywhere this morning.
What we do know is that when the cars finally made it out of their garages the results were chaotic. Almost everyone managed at least one spin as the tyres struggled with the green track and the cooler climate Turkey is experiencing right now.
During the break the GP2 cars have been practicing under darkening skies, and we might see some rain during this next 90 minute session.
Free Practice 2 begins at 2pm local time (12pm in the UK). As before we’re following Formula 1’s live timing online and watching ITV’s video coverage too.
5Live Sports Extra again have full audio coverage for this session. Usually it’s Maurice and Ian in the commentary box for the second session of the day.

Kimi pulled in to stop in his pit. Then he pulled away with a load of wheelspin to put rubber there for the race and the mechanics had to go down the pitlane and pull him in. If he does it everyone will and eventually we are going to have a pitlane full of mechanics pulling cars in.

Because it’s harder to put rubber down on the grid during normal running without either getting in someone else’s way or being hauled off to the stewards for being a potential track hazard. If they could find a way of making the grid grippier, I think the drivers would.

I’m in a slightly awkward position. In fact, having now checked my spreadsheet, I’m in a slightly awkward position for two reasons. The first is that I’ve promised Keith at F1 Fanatic can use it first, so I really need to wait until after the weekend before I can start publishing the spreadsheet on my blog.
The other problem only emerged as I looked through my spreadsheet a couple of minutes ago. I thought it had the data for all the sectors on, but it turns out all those extra columns in there mean something else (gaps and number of laps, as it turns out). The only way I can see of getting the sector times is by screen-shotting the live timing straight after the relevant practise session. I now have such a screenshot for Friday practise 2 for Turkey, but not for anywhere else. Sorry about that

something i was going to mention earlier is a new plan to enhance live commenting. at the moment with wordpress we’re all restricted to using text and links. it would be nice to be able to post screenshots and things too.
as a possible solution, we’re currently trialling something called Drop.io. which is a big bucket in the cloud that you can drop stuff into. images, video, audio pretty much anything multimedia.
i’ll do a whole post on this later, and i wouldn’ve mentioned it earlier but the site was down
anyhow, you can see it here:

so far i’ve put some livetiming screenshots up there and by some coincidence a video of webber’s crash appeared there too! feel free to try it out and drop your own stuff in and let us know what you think.
