Live Commenting: Turkey - Qualifying
Brilliant stuff, F1 in Turkey is looking at an unpredictable qualifying, and we’re really excited!
There may be no-one in the stands to appreciate it and it may be cold and damp for all the people in the paddock, but tyres are the story of the day. Getting temperature into the black rubber will be key to a good position this afternoon and Ferrari look to be struggling in this area.
Red Bull on the other hand seem to have found exactly the setup they need, (especially on the softer compound), and with both cars in the top three in FP3, what can they do when it really matters?
The weather will likely be a key factor for the next few hours. Some rain is predicted, but when it will fall is something of an unknown quantity. We still don’t really know how the ‘08 spec cars will handle in the wet, maybe today we’ll find out?
We’re watching ITV’s qualifying coverage, which is also available online. Don’t forget official live timing on f1.com.
Say “hi” if you’re in the comments, and maybe even tell us what you had for breakfast!

This is really ironic - I’ve just checked the 5 day weather forecast for Turkey on autosport.com and it says partly cloudy for both today and tomorrow, and on monday? Thunderstorms! Oh if only we could have that forecast moved back a day - Thunderstorm + no TC = Chaos thoery?

I remember watching one of the past chalk talk sessions Steve Matchett did and he talked about on the wheel rim, there was a chance of a screw working it’s way out of it’s slot sometimes. I know they said it was a manufacturing fault, but do you think maybe that might have been a factor too?
May 10th, 2008 at 11:26 amme said:
not sure, i mean the people at fault came clean and basically said “we screwed the painting process”.
i’ve no idea how that can make such a difference, but it’s an odd thing to admit if it wasn’t true?

Looking at the times and how many cars are opting for multiple-lap runs, it looks like the tyres this weekend aren’t wearing as much, which means that over the course of the race, due to the cooler temperatures and the earlier date in the calender, the tyres should still be working well at the end of their stints. Maybe McLaren will use Ferrari’s tyre temperature problem to their advantage and grab some valuable points this weekend.

I wonder what Honda would think, if Williams replaced kaz with Takuma? I am being serious - this year he has not done badly, kept out of trouble and got the car to the finish with virtually no practice - just look at his points in fantasyracers to confirm this. It would meet the need for a Japanese driver and be a scoop for Toyota (aw I would love it!) and it would prick Honda corporate conscious.
Piquet, is I am afraid, possibly the most rubbish driver on the grid - but that is what nationalistic sponsorship can do it so Ant’s got not chance (be he would be better!).

Yes it most certainly was…
At one point we thought they wouldn’t be able to get rid of the oil on the track and it would be oily and wet for the GP but it wasn’t…..

Little Nelson fried his little brains I’m afraid.
Yamamoto would do a much better job and he’s not the best Japanese driver out there! Sato is my Nº1 choice to replace the unfortunate Pqt. I mean what all those sons of famous fathers are even doing in F1, OK, Hill, JV they sort of achieved something but Kaz, Pqt and even Rsbrg (although he seems to be the best of 2nd generation drivers). Next thing you know in 15 years we’ll have the starting grid looking like this:
1 Felipe Massa Jr. Ferrari 1:27.617
2 Heikki Kovalainen Jr. McLaren 0:00.796
3 Lewis Hamilton Jr. McLaren 0:00.911
4 Kimi Raikkonen Jr. Ferrari 0:00.924
5 Robert Kubica Jr. BMW 0:01.378
6 Mark Webber Jr. Red Bull 0:01.405
7 Fernando Alonso Jr. Renault 0:01.410
8 Jarno Trulli Jr. Toyota 0:01.824
9 Nick Heidfeld Jr. BMW 0:01.870
10 David Coulthard Jr. Red Bull 0:01.947
11 Nico Rosberg III Jr. Williams 0:00.000
12 Rubens Barrichello Jr. Honda 0:00.207
13 Jenson Button Jr. Honda 0:00.286
14 Sebastien Vettel Jr. Toro Rosso 0:00.400
15 Timo Glock Jr. Toyota 0:00.794
16 Kazuki Nakajima III Jr. Williams 0:00.535
17 Nelsinho Piquet III Jr. Renault 0:00.556
18 Sebastien Bourdais Jr. Toro Rosso 0:00.609
19 Giancarlo Fisichella Jr. Force India 0:00.795
20 Adrian Sutil JR. Force India 0:01.313

Flav will take Grosjean before he takes Sato…
His record of promoting testers is pretty rock solid…
And Grosjean is French and the Renault tester…

love the thermal imaging camera. those tyres are really hot. would love to see a similar shot tomorrow and compare the colours of a new set of tyres versus an old set.

Which suited him as it was going to flatter Alonso and proove to be no real challenge… Heikki would have been, as Lewis is finding….
But if you think about it Flav had Alonso as a tester, he wanted to follow him with Webber who refused to take the year off and went to Jaguar instead, he then had Heikki and Junior…
I think he had all the above under some kind of management contract too…
I know that I spotted another guy he promoted from a test role before Alonso the other day… I’ll have to look it out…

When you are at the track the time it takes the GP2 guys to go round the track is an eternity in comparison to the F1 guys…
And you can read a book between visits from the Porsche supercup cars….

Me I think you are being a bit harsh on Kaz. I actually have an even better idea - for Toyota to take on Takuma. If you compare team mate wars - Timo is actually even worse than Piquet - since Jarno has scored more points than Fernando. Dump Timo cos he is rubbish and take on Takuma. Takuma and Jarno - I think Toyota would get some where.
For reigning terror on pit crew Kaz has a fairly serious competitor in Ms Danica Patrick. Interesting no helmuts and not pitlane limiters in Indy series. Ms Patrick should get extra points since it was not her own team but an opposition.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUpehvsZxNU
During Kentucky IRL 2007 she had the following incidents in one race
#1 Pits incident with patrick and franchitti.
#2 Spin of the pit out, flatted her tires
#3 Spin off the track under yellow after tire flatted and just missed the safety vihicle.

Now imagine a series with DC, DeSeb, Kaz, Danica and Lewis (who also likes to spin at pit entrances) - it would be a completely new sport.

good lord, that would be a short race
fair enough, maybe kaz isn’t that bad, vettel’s hardly excelled himself so far this year either. sato at toyota might get the team even more kudos than putting the same man at williams, so yeah that could work too.

I know ickle Felipe is not the most popular driver on this forum, but since Flav said “you cannot have two brilliant drivers in the same team” or words to that effect (when referring to the possibility of Kimi and Fernando in the same team) - I am supporting Masa to show Flav up. He got six poles last year and this year has more poles than anyone else - not bad for a rubbish driver. Pity I forgot to change my Fantasyracers team to include him, it is a bit catching disease this forgetting to update your team.

he was, yes, bourdais refused to sign anything so went west instead. and franck took that contract. i think he fell out with flav when he went to toyota though.

You have to say that even if you don’t like Flav that if you stick with him he seems to give you a decent chance…
Whether Piquet deserves it is an interesting discussion…

Similarly Adrian Sutil - Fisi has rubbished his performance this year. Personally I think the teams are trying to go for too young drivers to grab headlines and publicity. In my book many of the youngster lack consistency (either they should be driving the less competitive cars in F1 or have more testing to get F1 experience). Exceptions, of course are Lewis-for-sure-Hamilton (might not like him but he is good) and Robert-I-am-a-ball-of-fun-Kubica they are pretty consistent and fast. I do not really put Heikki in this category since he was a test driver for a long time and good (please to see him take second on the grid). I think it is a pity to see some experienced and good drivers like Ant (and now Takuma), Vitantonio and Christian (Klein)not in competitive seats. Of course there are some older drivers that should be put out to graze (e.g. DC would be top of my list - compare his to Webber’s results this year)- last year its was Ralfie. I thought the
