Thermal Imaging

As very kindly pointed out by Kathi during live commenting earlier, FOM appeared to be trialling a new type of camera in the pitlane today.

Displayed without any fanfare (and completely missed by us) was this shot of Nico Rosberg refueling during qualifying this afternoon:

Rosberg pitstop caught on thermal camera

That seems like a pretty handy thing to have around, and you can easily see the engine venting is the toastiest area of the car, glowing white hot in the screenshot.

I’m surprised at how warm the tyres are in comparison to the engine, and it looks like the lower cross-section of the rear wing has taken a bit of a hammering from the engine exhaust.

Kathi has kindly uploaded a high quality clip if you fancy seeing it in action.

If they think Sebastian Loeb was scruffy - what would they make of James Hunt - who expressly had it stipulated in his contract that he would NOT be expected to wear suits or smoke his sponsor’s brands of fags.

Thanks Lou some more on Hunt. When he booked at fancy Mayfair restuarants he would take his dog OSCAR as his dining companion. He famously wore a badge on his racing overalls that read Sex - Breakfast of Champions.
I miss characters like Hunt, apparently Kimi is a huge admirer of the “Hunt the Shunt” - he entered and won a snowmobile event under the name James Hunt.

Can you imagine a modern driver doing the following…

he preferred to turn up to formal functions in bare feet and jeans; he was a casual user of marijuana; and he lived an informal life near the beach in Marbella

ah, go on, it’s too early to sleep anyhow. top 5 then:

    1. james allen - for never acknowledging a single complaint about his abilities
    2. max - for so many reasons, but mostly for introducing grooved tyres
    3. bernie - for inflicting tamara on us
    4. mike coughlan - for ruining a great f1 season
    5. schumi - for those pink, gaudy, flowery shirts… there’s just no need.

I met Hunt in the early 80s at a Marlboro competition at Silverstone. He was there to present prizes. Possibly the single least impressive human being I have ever met. He had this dopey dog with him. I think it was an Alsation. It walked around behind him and every time he stopped it just dropped like all four legs had given way.

1.james allen - i agree, also for the sheer stupidity he showed today by refering to Heikki as Rubens and never correcting himself!
    2. Bernie - for wanting all the money he can get!
    3. Max - for refusing to step down and walk away, also for making stupic comments about drivers and making Jenson get rid of his beard…
    3. Ron Dennis and his stupid PR stunts (im not a hamilton fan but come on! that was stupid!)
    4. Steve Rider - do i relly need a reason?
    5. Tamara - for that interview with the ferrari boys while skiing! (it was just her getting a free holiday from her dad!)

    :P

good spot. presumably that’s caused because they’re effectively the rear brake cooling?

might that shed a little light on why a bad paint job caused kovi’s accident in spain too?

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/67211

It has been established that, owing to a process fault during manufacture, the outer clamp surface of the wheel was given a clear lacquer coating. As a consequence of this fault, the clamp load that attached the wheel was not to specification.

now i don’t really understand that either, and to further confuse things f1.com says this:

    http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2008/791/532.html

caused by a wheel manufacturing fault leading to continuous contact between the inner side of the rim and the carbonfibre brake drum

which isn’t the same thing at all is it? unless the lacquer was thick enough to cause rubbing… maybe.

That was funny, it reminded me of 2005/6 when he was at renault with the long scruffy hair! although the beard did suit him! beards/ stubble seems to suit f1 drivers at the moment :)

I can’t find out what the clamp surface is. I have seen it said to be the bit where the tyre sidewall touches the wheel and also the bit where the wheelnut touches the wheel. It may be something entirely different.

Assuming it is where the wheelnut contacts then lacquer could cause a problem because instead of metal locking on to metal it would have a layer of lacquer in the middle which would deform or crack under load causing a vibration. Although I haven’t seen anything to say Heikki reported a vibration.

Remember all points on the body work with maximum downforce will also heat up - as you put pressure on air it heats - so in this picture the hotter parts of bodywork are literally windows to aerodynamic soul of the car. The winglets seem to also being quite a bit of work. Fascinating picture and thanks Kathi for putting up the video.
