It’s time for Formula 1’s annual trip to the principality of Monaco, and this time the event is the 6th stop on the racing calendar. 20 drivers are set to do battle on this, the most demanding of tracks. With it’s narrow streets and marginal run off areas, the circuit is the ultimate test of driver skill and concentration.
Join us as Sidepodcast once again takes to the streets to find out what’s in store for the drivers and mechanics on this challenging circuits. Rosberg provides the driver insight while two of Toyota’s top men offer alternative perspectives and somewhere in there lurks a glamour model too. Well, it is Monaco after all.
Special thanks to Allianz SE, Toyota Motorsports GmbH, Red Bull Racing, Honda Racing F1 and RTV GmbH for the use of their video footage and photographs.

Another great preview. I think this race is going to be very interesting and I won’t risk predicting a top 3 until qualifying starts. Hopefully I will be available to take part in live commenting on Thursday as well haven’t had the chance the join in in a while.

not even a stab in the dark?
let’s say at the least the track will be damp, even if it’s not a wet qually. massa crashes in the dry around here, so does kimi. i’m gonna go for:
- lewis
- alonso
- heikki
i think alonso will go light just to give hamilton something to think about.
looking forward to it. sutil finished top of the sheets on a wet practice last year. i can see some screengrabs coming on

Me,
I wonder what the world will say, if Massa wins a fourth race on the trot.
I know the theory is that Massa has his favourite tracks and wins from pole: but I’m just wondering if he’s finally gotten the message from Ferrari and is going all out to win everything he can. I think he’s fast enough, when he’s in the mood.

hadn’t considered that possibility. he couldn’t could he? even before he had his haphazard start to the year, we’d always said he was useless in the wet.
changeable conditions at monaco, odds are firmly stacked against him. plus even if he is in front, any driver within half a mile is bound to take a shot at passing. unless he’s the only finisher i just can’t see him winning.
would love it if he proved me wrong though.

I am hoping for some surprises, like Red Bull and Mark Webber doing really well, even their first win? Although I have rushed to the defense of ickle Felipe - this is not his circuit. This year’s Ferrari may be better on the circuit, but I think the the McLarens will dominate but Renault could come back, rather Alonso could challenge, Piquet will crash out. Alonso is good in the wet too. I really hope Trulli puts a good show for Toyota.

British Formula One driver Jenson Button is starting an aviation charter business.
The Japanese manufacturer Honda, for whom the 28-year-old races, revealed on Tuesday that Button is to be the first European buyer of its light business jet.
Honda said Button has ordered two of the twin-engine HondaJets, which reportedly come with a price-tag of $3.65m apiece.
They will apparently be delivered to European customers in 2012.
So much for Jenson’s or Honda’s eco-friendly image! I mean Jenson or somebody else does this thing and then European governments meet and say “Aah, you bad bad motorists! If you drive a new Twingo or even a tiny Chevy Matiz you contribute to global warming!” and then they tax us even more and fly to Japan or America to hold useless talks on useless issues or maybe to have some fun. Obviously, EU officials must be some special breed or a new human race because they seem to produce no CO2 at all. It’s only us, hoi polloi. Not fair. I want cheap petrol to try to beat Jenson’s carbon footprint.

Massa to win Monaco? To quote Mr JP McEnroe. You cannot be serious. There is no chance he will win. None.
I love sticking my neck out making predictions but I can’t help thinking if I am wrong about some of the things I have said about Monaco on a few sites I will be in for some earache next week.
So
1. Lewis Hamilton. No other outcome is possible
2. Heikki Kovalainen
3. Kimi Raikkonen
Massa? Pick a barrier any barrier.
If he was to win the world would say that it is unbelievable that one accident could take out so many cars while Massa was on a diffrent part of the track entirely.

gosh ok predictions….im not so good with these, so i reserve my final predictions for saturday. But i will predict who i would like today, and no doubt again after thursday.
so at the moment my predictions are
1. Kimi
2. Lewis
3. Fernando
I don’t think Massa will crash, but im thinking something may happen to make him lower down on the grid. Maybe not a crash in the race, maybe a crash in Q2 or a disasterous Q3.
If Massa wins the Monaco GP i will stop calling him ‘ickle Massa’ - not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

LEWIS FTW!
Ahem, I mean, here is what I think will happen:
Lewis will grab pole and win, he loves it round Monaco, and I think he’ll get his revenge from last year.
The Ferrari’s long wheelbase will give Kimi and Massa headaches again XD
Alonso will pull something from nowhere and make the top 3 in qualifying, but he’ll drop off in the race
And a Force India will top at least 1 practice session IF it’s wet

I don’t know what the world will say but if Massa wins four on a trot on a wet Monaco I will ban myself from watching the next Grand Prix
Well, my predictions only if its a wet race :
Lewis
Kimi
Kubica
Alonso and Kovi close behind.
What is Trulli’s mood now guys Story on GPUpdate.net

I really love the black and white on board footage near the begining of the video by the way. Great video as always! Oh and Christine, this is gonna sound strange, but i like your top! It looks very warm! just the thing i need for those long cold exams in the hall.

Here are my predictions:
1 ) Lewis
2 ) Kimi
3 ) Mark
With Kovi, Robert and Fernando following.
If it is wet Fisi could be in the top eight.

I think Force India could do well this weekend as both Fisi and Sutil could both surprise people if its wet.
Sutil is also a former F3 lap record holder at Monaco and I really hope he regains some of last years form at this race

If there was a Frenchman driving in the race this year, I would not have mind the idea of the F1 red-flagging the rce due to “heavy” rain the minute that the Frenchman gained or was handed the lead… (Not that I am giving the F1A any ideas…) Failing this, with the relative high number of not really that experienced drivers at Monaco this year, plus no traction control and a hopefully a nice soaked track (at least a steady downpour) and some guts on the F1A, I am predicting Adrain Sutil as the only driver slow enough to come to a complete stop before he comes to the the 1st lap, 21 car pile up at Sainte Devote, with an undamaged car, so that when they clear the wreckage out of the way he can make at least up the hill before the two hour time limit is up.
Once they analysis the accident enough they will find that Massa takes out Hamilton and they come to rest after the corner, and the whole grid just comes crashing into them.
a) a piece of Boudais front wing flew the farest up the hill, handing him 2nd place.
b) A piece of Button’s sidepod is the next piece of debris that went the farest down the track, which would be good enough for third place.
c) A piece of that god-ugly green racing stripe from a Honda is found. Which is matched up to Button’s car for fourth place.
d) A wheel rim from Vettel’s car gives him fifth.
I do not think that Christine cheers of any other current F1 drivers. I guess Davidson in a Super Aguri landing a sixth due to a piston head would have drove Chrisitne to drink realizing that she did not pick any of these guys for Monaco…

Hey, I was looking at the Fantasy Racers web site while typing this stuff up. The Super Aguri drivers can still be bought there for 5 million apiece if anyone fancies the upset of the century…
I also noticed that I mentioned Button. Twice. Take your pick as to Barrie or Button. Either way, STR fragments are lighter than Honda fragments, and Vettel’s wheel rim will be heavier than Bourdais piece of front wing….
Come on, enough rain to form a lake at the New Chicane and Pool Sections….

Hey Jordan,
They can? i wander if you would still gain pionts?? Gotta get more pionts than Vettel.
lol Button can be mentioned twice, but if i have to choose i would say Button 3rd and Barrie 4th
ooo rain would be nice! specially cause both Button and Alonso are good in the wet. (i kinda support Alonso, not as much as the hondas though
What are the chances of rain this weekend? does anyone know? anyone checked recently?

all sites still suggesting likely hood of rain.

yay! have just checked Accuweather, and some other sites and it suggests that Thursday is gonna be reasonably sunny. But more importantly dry! It’s gonna be hard for the drivers to set up the cars then isn’t it? Cause if they set it up for conditions on Thursday they may have to change it for Saturday if it’s raining. Perhaps we could end up with an interesting quali order if some drivers get a better set up than others.
ooo! I hope it rains after the start of the GP, will be interesting to see who gets the best strategy.
I am very excited now!

Great show, as usual.
I think you have a point there “me”, hes gone light in Turkey & Spain and it hasn’t worked as planned. Now he’s at Monaco he has no option but to try again. My top three:
Fernando - 3rd
Heikki - 2nd
Lewis - 1st
ooh, a fellow Honda fan. Surely they have to improve soon. 4 weeks since Spain and nothing.
Not even with the Dumbos.

yay! go honda! (and JB
) Its the wheel bins! hopefully they will ditch them or get them working, im hoping that the new winglets on the Dumbos may be better. I did notice they were not running them on one of the testing days, so they may not appear in Canada….who knows…..
Dom will you be joining us for live commenting? would be ncie to have a fellow Honda fan there

Ahh, the Honda wheel bins. I forget about hte them. The only thin that will look worse than the 21 car pile up are the 8 picutres of the world with cracks in them and pieces of the earth missing! Like how would the Honda PR department explain why there’s a big whole where Italy is supposed to be?
Let us all convince Christine that Montagny’s Super Aguri’s reserve driver and maybe she will pruchase one of the Super Aguri drivers in the hopes that he will get switched….
I picked up a book at teh library titled “How to do Rain Dances for Dummies”, sorry but I think I had too much fun. If there freezing rain or snow blame “me.” {Christine’s husband}

I’m predicting Raikkonen-Hamilton-Kovalainen with Massa having some disaster befall him (not necessarily driver-related).
I like the sound of that! Better still, I’ve got a new applet that allows me to take videos as well as pictures of what’s happening on screen. If Force India top a practice session, I can see me employing the facility…
I have the feeling Fisi might squeak into 8th at Monaco even if it’s dry - as long as he manages to avoid trouble itself. If that happens, Force India may struggle to get his feet on the ground in time for next race…
There is a Frenchman driving this year. Whether the Monaco Grand Prix will be stopped for Sebastién Bourdais’ benefit is unknown, particularly since the last time a Frenchman won it was at a wet Monaco Grand Prix…
Sorry to be a total spoilsport, but if a race is stopped before the end of lap 2 and cannot be restarted, it is treated as if the race never happened. How the teams are meant to explain to their suppliers that they are repairing cars that never raced is a mystery…
I will definitely be here tomorrow for live commentary, though I suspect I may not make Saturday.
