Live Commenting: Monaco - Free Practice 2
Here we go again then, time for another 90 minute blast around the streets of Monaco. The first session was a busy affair (aside from the quarter-of-an-hour stoppage to fix a problem with the drains). Both Trulli and Heidfeld fell foul of the barriers, while Coulthard’s car failed to make it through a single quick lap.
Those three drivers will be on the back foot in this second session and will be keen to make up for lost time, but out front the battle is squarely a McLaren / Ferrari duel. Although the Italian team finished atop the timesheets earlier it was the opposition who looked the more threatening.
We’re in for much more of the same this afternoon too as the weather remains constant. One thing we’ve yet to see is the softer compound tyre used in anger, and this race weekend marks the first time we’ve seen the super-soft rubber in action since electronic aids were banned at the beginning of the season.
Free Practice 2 begins at 2pm local time (1pm in the UK). As before we’re following Formula 1’s live timing as well as watching ITV’s online video coverage.
5Live Sports Extra have full audio coverage for this session and Ian Phillips is back in the commentary box after his absence from Turkey.
Please do tell us what you’re up to and what your thoughts are for the remainder of the day.

I quite like LH’s colours and HK’s McLaren helmet update looks good.

I’d imagine that there are many different makes just like there are of anything, gloves, boots, whatever. A driver can use whatever he likes, but if Ferrari have some kind of deal with one make, sponsorship, maybe, then the driver will have to forfeit his usual favourite for the team choice.

There are visible differences in shape but apart from that there’s not much I can tell you as I’m not a racing driver.
Arai
Bell
Schuberth
Bieffe
Just google these.
And I think Panis in 2004 and Trulli in 2006 would wear something like Sparco or “co” of some kind helmets.
The drivers must have contracts with helmet makes but the most common is Arai. Webber had to change from Schuberth to Arai in 2007 at the request of Newey because he thought it would help the air flow, something like that.

Unyielding barriers that await the unwary - that beats Mark Webber’s column! Still “boom-boom-boom” phrase to describe driving an F1 car is very hard to beat.

Why does nobody in the pit lane ever look where they were going? The Hamilton/pedestrian incident reminds me of a GP2 race in 2005 (I think) when Enrique Scalabroni (BCN boss) nearly got run over by Giorgio Pantano because he crossed the pitlane in the middle of the pit-stop window…
Honda still haven’t sorted their R&D out - there were several occasions last year when they took stuff to the track, tried the bits on Friday and then removed them prior to Saturday because they didn’t work as well as the old stuff.

Lou,
The reason Schumacher had a problem with Bell was because he signed a fat contract to wear their helmet and they built their advertising campaign round him. He then got a better offer from Schuberth who had never been involved in F1 till then and I had never heard of until then. Schumi got involved in designing the helmet etc so decided it was worth writing Bell huge cheques to get the Schuberth deal.
Helmets are like shoes. Some people feel comfortable in one brand and others don’t. I find Simpson helmets comfortable but got a pain on the top of my head when I tried a Bell helmet. So either Bell make funny shaped helmets or the top of my head is not flat enough.
So long as the helmet passes the safety tests the drivers can wear any brand they like or if they wanted to the teams could design and build helmets for their drivers. All of the drivers have contracts with one of the brands to wear their helmet. GP drivers helmets are fitted very accurately. I remember reading an article years ago by a journalist who was going to try an F1 car. He was treated like a GP driver and measured for a helmet. He was very proud of the fact that he had to get a particular shape because his nose was the same size(big) as Johnny Dumfries who was an aristocrat..
It didn’t look like Ron Dennis running in front of Lewis to me. The shot showed whoever it was from behind and his head was covered in black hair. It looked like Ron from 20 years ago.
I think Rosberg was quick because Williams build great chassis. They have always had great mechanical grip but have rarely had the best aerodynamics. The engine to all intents and purposes is irrelevant at Monaco. So at a slow track where mechanical grip is the deciding factor they gain. I would also assume that Nico is one of those divers who doesn’t break traction when he applies the throttle so is less affected than most by the lack of traction control.

Steven,
Does that mean, he’s smooth, like Button? Consequently good in the wet?
I get the feeling that certain drivers are all on and all off: and that’s hard on the machinery, wicked on the tyres.
Some of our drivers at the limo company would regularly get only 30,000 miles out of gearboxes: while others would get 80/100k miles. The most was a very tender footed chap (me) who got 160,000 miles before the gearbox had to be replaced.
I suspect that it is something referred to in some driving circles as mechanical sympathy.

I don’t know Nico’s wet race history but I would expect he is pretty good. You would think young racing drivers would be taught mechanical sympathy. To a certain extent it is something you either have or don’t have but they should be taught to maximise their capability.
The Bernie letter is at http://www.formula1.com/flash/other/F1-CRH-Letter-To-FIA-Club-Presidents.pdf
I thought he would write a glowing endorsement of Max but it looks like he has stuck the knife in and given it a good twist. Nothing gets between Bernie and his bank balance.

Has anyone told Honda to put oil in the engine. That’s what I do when mine makes grating noises.
