Live Commenting: Monaco – Qualifying
If there’s one thing that today’s free practice taught us, it’s that timing is everything. For one lap Heikki was the fastest thing out there, picking the perfect time to do his run when the most rubber was down but the rain hadn’t really affected the asphalt.
One lap later and he’s in the wall.
Finding that perfect moment to do a run in qualifying will be the biggest challenge for F1 teams and drivers this afternoon in Monaco. Not only are they playing chicken with the weather, there’s that all important problem of finding some space for a clear lap around the principality.
Notably, Vettel has already been hit with a 5-place grid penalty for having the nerve to finish the last race and then compete this one with a brand new car. He’s almost certain to start from the pit lane tomorrow, but where everyone else will end up in is anyone’s guess.
One thing is for certain though, the next few hours are going to be eventful and entertaining!
We’ll be watching ITV’s qualifying coverage, and full race build up, which is available online. In the comments Nelson also found a great site streaming ITV around the world. Don’t forget official live timing on f1.com too.
It’ll be a lottery in Monaco this afternoon, so we’re asking for all of your predictions today. Who’ll be on pole and who’ll be first to bin it? Who’ll be the biggest name out in the first part of qualifying and who’ll end up with a grid penalty for blocking on this the tightest of street circuits.

Is it time for predictions for Quali positions yet?

2. Lewis – It he is not on pole he won’t be far behind
3. Kimi
4. Nico
5. Massa
6. Kubica
7. Button
8. Heidfeld
9. Rubens
10.Webber

May 24th, 2008 at 12:19 #6 - Christine said:
I reckon Vettel might be unlucky again this race. Starting from the back, he’s going to have to push hard, so he might be the first to bin it.
Either that or it’ll be someone massive, like Raikkonen.
May 24th, 2008 at 12:19 #7 - lou said:
If he doesn’t he will probably push it too hard and end up in the wall tomorrow (providing its a wet race). If it does rain, then it will be all about tyres and stratagy. He is gonna need to look after his tyres.

I won’t be here for the qualifying – my telly is downstairs and laptop is upstairs and I’ll be having lunch at the same time. I’ll drop by after the session.
My prediction is Piquet for pole. Or maybe I should pick up Hamilton after all?
Have fun guys.

May 24th, 2008 at 12:21 #12 - me said:
he better not do that again, please. i’m gonna pitch for kubica on pole, based on his final run. and it’ll be massa in the wall.
May 24th, 2008 at 12:21 #13 - lou said:
It will probably be him hitting someone else and causing a saftey car.
I think its more likely to be Massa, given that he hates the track, and is scared of the wet.

I think the pit stop times article is utter rubbish. Pit stop times are entirely dependant on re-fueling and fuel flow is identical so if this is to be believed it means that McLaren take two seconds longer to get the fuel hose on and off and to release their drivers. Someone has lookd at a pile of pit stop times and added 2 and 2 together and arrived at 45. Without seeing the data this is based on I would say that BMW normally fuel longer and therefore need to put less fuel in at the stops so their average re-fueling tim is less.

We have only digital TV here in Finland, and in order to be able to watch it on oldfashioned analog TVs you need a ‘digiboxi’. I bought one that can record as well and hast a USB port for my external harddrive. That’s how I get it on my computer. Then I only need to convert the trp-stream (that’s how the digiboxi records) into normal mpegs and voila.

Get a bigger hard drive. Most of them things are 80 gigs now, and it is just a hard drive. I’ve replaced a few for friends in the states, and its just a case of working out which drive format it requires and swapping it out.
Either that or burn the races to archival DVD…

Much as I’d like the same, Alonso’s being paid by sponsors who insist on a Latin American as the second driver, so I suspect Lucas di Grassi would be the most likely candidate for the second Renault if Renault run out of patience with Piquet Jr.

Hi everyone, sorry I wasn’t with you guys today for qualifying, I had to go into the city for something. Anyway, here are my thoughts on qualifying:
It’s a real suprise to see the Ferraris lock out the front row, especially Massa. He hates this place, apparently, and I think IF it remains dry tomorrow, then they will walk it, sadly for me
I’m disappointed that Lewis didn’t make pole, although I will elaborate on what Harry said on Thursday, and I do agree that the rear end on that McLaren is a little bit too lively. I’m starting to think if that will be a problem of any sort if the rain falls in the race.
One driver which has impressed me so far is Rosberg. The front end on that Williams really does look hooked up perfectly. If it’s dry, he’s got a good chance to score 4th, 5th or 6th. Maybe the podium if one of the Ferrari’s or McLarens hit trouble. One thing is for sure – the boy’s lookin’ quick!
DC’s incident simply to me looks like the rear end snapped the car sideways under braking. Although when I look at it from different angles, it resembles two different past Monaco incidents. When I watch the shunt from the angle showing the whole of the chicane, it’s reminiscent of Button’s ‘03 shunt, while looking at it from the front reminds me of the accident a Minardi had in ‘05.
Piquet was very lucky to catch the rear end in his slide out of Portier. I’m worried we’ll see a lot more of that if it rains tomorrow.
I for one would love for it to rain tomorrow. It will completely throw the team’s setups off and that means we could see a rather unusual finishing order. No TC will just add to the excitement, and I think it will be one of the best races in years.
There, just my thoughts

It is usually not economical to change a hard drive on a laptop – hence we use external drives which just plug into your USB port (or Firewire if you have a Mac). A 750 GB external drive will cost about £115.
For burning CDs on Windows most people use Roxio or Nero burning – we actually went the extra costs and got Ashampoo Burning Studio ( http://www.ashampoo.com ) – more stable and virtually never lost a CD/DVD (I cannot remember it happening) and everyone finds it easier to use than the other options.

You want someone other than the best teams to win?
Fine if you do: but I’d rather the best folks won? Ferrari and McClaren are the best teams right now.
However: my main concern is the safety thing, you folks are mostly quite a bit younger than me: and it has really only been a thing of the past 15 years or so (Mad Max’s time) that safety of drivers has become a major issue.
F1 is dangerous by its very nature: rain makes it more so. I don’t want to be supporting a sport where three drivers die every year and its just accepted (as it used to be). People seem to like watching the accidents, and I really don’t: I was horrified watching Coulthard racing toward that wall today.
The modern safety of the cars is worrying in a sense that people think its always going to be okay to slam into a wall at 150 mph: it isn’t, its extremely dangerous.

***WARNING RANT***
Absolutely – can someone tell me when I either Ferrari, McLaren or Renault did not win a GP – I guess it would be Jenson in the Honda, was that not hugely fantastic? The Renault is now no better than a “mule/bicycle”. My American friends cannot understand while I like F1 because they see it as an event with only one of four outcomes.
If it is Dry it will be a Ferrari winning, on present form it could even be Massa.
A decade ago the cars were still unreliable, even if it rains the likelihood of only three cars finishing is remote in the extreme. Also cars are so much safer now, that the personal risks are quite low of serious injury (obviously my most major concern of a wet race and it is a legitimate one).
I am afraid I am now on my desk wearing my rain mask and dancing to some African ritual music! But the Rain God must only provide a little rain and a little sun alternatively during the race to change the status quo.
Just think if BMW Sauber, Red Bull, STR or Force India got their maiden victory how exciting it would be for the entire team. Just think how excited, I, Christine, Lou etc would be if Jenson got his second victory, or Nick, Mark, Nico, Robert, Le Seb etc got their first win!
We are WANTING some unpredictability that is why a little rain might spice things up. It might also motivate other teams and drivers to do BETTER!
Of course no one wants a monsoon – because then the race will be as fast as the safety car. Further no responsible person wants to see an accident either. But sometimes Thrills come at the cost of Spills, just hope the spills don’t hurt any life forms.

I am included to agree with Rich on this one
It would spice up an otherwise boring race.
I understand the dangers of Monaco and obviously f1, I have read enough articles and books and seen enough crashes (both live and on YouTube) to know that. I’ve heard about and seen footage the fatal crashes in f1 and they scare the living daylight out of me. But the drivers get paid to race, and they race at their own risk. They understand the risk, but still race because they love it so much. Whilst I would hate for someone to get hurt (I can’t stand the crashes), Monaco is not often very exciting so a little bit of rain would make it less predictable.

Thanks – that makes a lot of sense – I always see Nick as a rather smooth driver. So BMW are potentially lighter on fuel and tyres than the other cars. I wonder if the return to slicks next year might not favour them. I also get the impression this year’s BMW Sauber suits a more aggressive driver – Lewis would do well in it. It also explains Nick’s poor qualifying form this year and why BMW Sauber always fuel him more heavily than Robert. A return to one tyre per race would really suit the team and Nick!
