Episode 63 - How Come he Doesn’t Need Tyres when Everyone Else Does?

Sidepodcast logo

A cracking race at Monaco means there’s no time to catch up on the news, which is good, because there wasn’t any. Today, it’s all about the racing.

Intro

Thankfully we had an extra day to make this show, how it’s going to work for Canada, we just don’t know.

Good Week / Bad Week

Good week for Williams and Alonso, bad week for spying and being outdoors.

Qualifying

Only Coulthard could have such an intriguing crash - there’s the wheel but where’s the car?

The Race

So many incidents, so little time, but it all comes back to Sutil.

Feedback

The Canada Sidepodcast meet up suffers a setback, but it’s not out of the window yet, and both Drop.io and Kathi made our weekend.

Housekeeping

We reveal our plans for Goodwood and entice you to listen to next week’s show.

yay! your going to goodwood! :D ehehe I will certainly be looking out for you both (i hope the weather is good) and i will come and say hi! It would be great to wander round with you for a bit and have a chat, you could show me some of the best bits of goodwood (your so much more experienced at goodwood than i am - considering i have never been before). Not sure im gonna be autograph hunting (not really into that I’m afread) but i will probably be after a photo if thats ok ;)

You could release the goodwood video as a goodwood preview ;)

that much we can certainly do.

not a problem. also while you mention it, to all who are expecting a signed photo of christine in the mail. i haven’t forgotten, but we did a photo shoot of said girl and i inadvertently (and rather stupidly) deleted the images. i’m gutted because they came out really well, but we’re going to have a 2nd attempt soon and send them out shortly after, so sorry for being useless.

thanks :D it was strange hearing my voice on your podcast, but ok cause it was only like 20 secs. Its strange to think that just a year ago i was just listening to the podcasts, thinking how great they were, and now im commenting all the time and loving sidepodcast more and more :)

I will try and do a similar one after each Grand Prix. I have even done a spreadsheet on excel (any excuss). ;) I have the number on my phone now so you may get even more from me. Probably not as many as from Scott though. Honda’s No.1 fan hehe :D that made me smile.

that much we can certainly do.

Im probably looking forward to that now more than i am goodwood itself :)

    not a problem

    Wow!

My Monaco-specific race strategy dubbbed “Christine”, was based on the belief that rookie drivers have no hope at Monaco; and (more importantly) whoever Christine picks is going to smack the wall at some point. (Just not hard enough in Hamilton’s case) netted me an additional 95 extra points by switching Kovie for Glock and Barrichello! (I was leaning toward Fisichella, until…) Koive is in my starting “Jordan F1″ team linup.

Please note that I have spent the same amount of money here.

Spa is the other track I have something special planned. I am curretly debating whether to call the strategy there “Me” or “Christine II”.

Here is a new Facebook thread.

    Just answer this question:

    You know you’re an F1 fan when…

    For example:

You know you’re an F1 fan when you celebrate all of life’ achievements with a bottle of champaign sprayed all over the place.

You know you’re an F1 fan when you start the car, you swerve all over the road trying to warm up the tires.

You know you’re an F1 fan when you get into an accident, you walk away in frustration blaming the car for “failing.”

I am interested in seeing what you all come up with.

Hey guys. Great to see the podcast up, it made for fantastic entertainment whilst going through my morning absolutions. Have to say that was one of the funniest and most enjoyable yet. It almost makes me look forward to the Mosleygate one next week - if there are two people who can make such a podcast enjoyable, it’s you two (and I’m sure the sidepodcast community can come up with some good Max jokes for you if you need to lighten the tone…)

Oh, and while I’ve got it up, I’ve checked Accuweather for the forecasts for Montreal:

    Friday - considerable clouds
    Saturday - mostly cloudy
    Sunday - clouds and sun

So, at the moment there’s no rain forecasted but it looks like it’s going to be quite cool in temperatures, although with all that cloud, there could be a possible drizzle or two, I think.

By the way, what’s the name of the weather site/software the FIA uses?

For those of you who haven’t sprayed champagne, go buy a small bottle from the bottle shop and spray it in the shower or back yard. Audience optional. The feeling is indescribable.

Put anti Hamilton in your podcast title - Seriously!

I am now unsubscribing from your podcast. If you put anti Lewis Hamiton podcast in the title it would have saved me a lot of bandwidth over the last couple of days.

How can you talk for nearly an hour about the Monaco weekend and barely mention Hamilton? He made two world champions look very silly.

It’s so blatantly obvious that you are doing everything you can to ignore Lewis Hamilton, why? You are spoiling an otherwise good Podcast.

I appreciate that many sites are desperately trying to appeal to an intentional audience and avoid giving Hamilton to much coverage but that was simply ridiculous, if i didn’t know the result i would have struggled to guess from your coverage!

that’s what f1 digest is for tom!

last year we discussed each lap of every race and it just took so long it became a bit boring. listen to f1 digest and you’ll get all the race coverage you need.

we try and please everybody, which is why we have such a variety of shows. all you need to do is pick the one you’re most interested in… or listen to all of them ;)

this particular show is just about the bits we enjoyed the most and the one’s that caught our attention, for me this week that happened to be kubica because he didn’t put a foot wrong all weekend.

  18. May 27th, 2008 at 11:41 amChristine said:

Also, we don’t try and avoid Hamilton. We talk about the bits of the weekend that interest us, and in the Hamilton story, it was the fact that McLaren seemed to have the legs on everyone else with their weather data.

Taking nothing away from Lewis, he drove an amazing race, but personally, I was more intrigued by the strategy they used, and the information they must have had at their fingertips.

  19. May 27th, 2008 at 11:52 amAlex Andronov said:

    @Tom Croft

The fact that Hamilton was his usual competent self wasn’t the story. The fact that neither James or Martin gave him driver of the day should tell you that.

Episode 63 - Did Webber get disqualified and Vettel get promoted to 4th? Kubica wasn’t the only one who ran to their strategy and picked up a good position. How many times does Webber have to be the “best of the rest” before he gets recognition

  21. May 27th, 2008 at 12:05 pmme said:

leon, i moved your comment to this thread as it seemed more relevant, hope that’s ok?

as for webber, apologies you are correct, webber ran his strategy right too.

i would argue he got his backside kicked by alonso, whereas heidfeld put up more of a fight. mind you that fight wrecked nick’s race, so maybe webber was the smartest guy out there?

aside from that though i can’t think of anything interesting that happened to him. like i said earlier, he didn’t grab my attention this race, and that’s the things we focus on.

i guess we could do a full rundown of every driver, just so that we’re fair and no-one gets forgotten, but f1 digest already does that doesn’t it??

  22. May 27th, 2008 at 12:12 pmLeon said:

Thanks - others were certainly faster in early stages as Webber must have been heavy to be able to run so long. He certainly got his sufficient share of fastest laps even if he didn’t get his share of TV coverage

Monaco was best race of the season. It’s amazing how many “top” drivers make mistakes when they are under pressure or when conditions are less than satisfactory

  23. May 27th, 2008 at 12:12 pmChristine said:

A few shows ago, we said that the Red Bull is clearly not quite up to scratch yet so Webber’s only job this year is to beat Coulthard.

he ran something like 5 laps shorter than sutil, who we now know had absolutely brimming tanks. so that’s a heck of a qualifying strategy given mark started in 9th and sutil in 18th.

Being a newbie and having listened to Episode 62 and 63 perhaps I haven’t listened to a reprehensive couple of episodes? Would love to be wrong about anti Hamilton stance because otherwise thoroughly entertaining and well put together podcast.

But from my point of view in Episode 62 I heard Hamilton being criticised for taking part in a sponsorship event, that Hamilton had said that he was Nelson Mandela (er no that not what he was saying), something about hanging (which I hope I heard wrong), that Hamilton would probably say that he was the ”king of the world”, that you “did like Webbers quote, he had a little dig about him”, you then referred to an irrelevant quote from Max Clifford saying that Hamilton was a “performing puppet”. Later in the podcast you went on to say that Hamilton was “bi polar”, that it wasn’t a good showing from Hamilton in qualifying but totally glossed over the fact that he had the race of season up to that point.

Then in Episode 63 after Monaco, again another fantastic race from Hamilton but this time very little coverage of him in the race reaction, at least it wasn’t negative I suppose (apart from the sarcasm about being excited to see him at Goodwood).

Totally understand that you can’t please everyone and everyone is going to have a favourite driver but the criticism of Hamilton just seemed a little unbalanced to me. But if that’s not what you are trying to achieve then fair enough.

Alex - Re Hamilton not being giving driver of the day, neither was Kubica so I don’t see how that argument works!

  32. May 27th, 2008 at 2:32 pmChristine said:

See, now if you’d have said we were anti-Hamilton immediately after Episode 62, this would have made perfect sense.

    A couple of points, though.

What I would say is, it’s not because it’s Hamilton, it’s because the stunt was absolutely ridiculous. If it had been the other way round with Webber doing the stunt and Hamilton having the dig, we would have done it exactly the same.

The Performing Puppet quote was extremely relevant, because I don’t want to see F1 drivers reduced to being a corporate flagpole, do you?

Not sure what reference to hanging you thought you heard, I hope we didn’t say anything that harsh. Will have to double check when I get to writing that transcript.

The Goodwood sarcasm comes from the fact that the ridiculous crush to see him last year ruined at least half of our Sunday.

Finally, we don’t want this podcast to turn into anything fake. We’re not going to talk about Hamilton if we don’t feel it’s justified. This race, he had the best strategy and he made it work, but I don’t think he did anything unexpected or out of the ordinary. The problem is he is just too good. And in the end, there’s not much else to say.

    Hi Christine, hi Me

First I must to say that I really love this blog. In the last months I spent a lot of time reading and hearing old stuffs that are brilliant and informative. I love the shows and the mood in that you create them, but I have to admit that Tom is a little bit right about your Lewis´s coverage. I don´t know if there´s a anti- Lewis feeling in it but if it does, could be very strange to ignore the man that is making this boring races, and the Formula 1 in general, more exciting.

In other hand I admit that you guys always put the spot in details that the “ordinary coverage” sometimes ignore and this is what make this blog brilliant. I wonder that you guys doesn’t have time enough to coverage Lewis and the details that make the blog especial.

I don’t know how to be more balanced in the coverage, but you can’t ignore that Lewis is the factor that made Istanbul and Monaco great races.

For example: I´m from Brazil and we have a poor Formula 1 press. I always must to come here and in another blogs to read a rich content about the races. So I´m one of this guys whom need more points of view about Lewis.

I don’t know how is the Lewis´s coverage in England (I wonder that could be annoying!), but this could affect you coverage to the rest of the world (Oh, yes, you have an International show!!!)

A-ha! Hamilton discussion going on! The show wasn’t anti-Hamilton.

    I’ll agree with Mrs Me.

The problem is he is just too good. And in the end, there’s not much else to say.

I’m actually glad that people who are posting here are not morbid calculating lads and lasses who would go “How dare you slam my favourite driver - he did this fantastic time in sector one that made me faint and all my friends just jumped out of the window in excitement”. General F1 coverage is much much better than your usual fan club nonsense. Although your humble servant enjoys spreading chaos and mass destruction/distraction on RF1 fan site.

Anyway, I was gonna say Piquet was reportedly given another extensive test in order to boost his lost confidence. I think they just want to look good when they dump him. I suspect Flav was taken by surprise, he didn’t expect little Nelson to underperform like he did. I heard Pat Symonds had serious doubts about NP and it’s no secret Piquet struggled in winter testing. All in all, he’s the biggest disappointment for me personally since the legendary Yuji Ide.

tom, if that episode was the very first you heard, then i can see your reasoning, but it’s been a standing joke since the beginning of the season that jarno trulli is somewhat bipolar. we give every driver grief given the opportunity.

i will add, if you take a look around this very site, there are only two formula one driver’s photographs featured continuously, and one of those is of mr. hamilton.

I don’t know how to be more balanced in the coverage, but you can’t ignore that Lewis is the factor that made Istanbul and Monaco great races.

the simple answer is that listeners can help here. we’ve always said we have our favourite drivers and do tend to concentrate on them first and foremost, but anyone can call the show and offer their opinion at any time.

we try to play every voicemail we receive (0121 28 87225 is the number). any calls we get offering differing viewpoints are always appreciated.

    excuses, excuses.

All in all, he’s the biggest disappointment for me personally since the legendary Yuji Ide.

Jan Magnussen is another. Sometimes having the best cars an winning all the races in the junior categories is not the best preparation for F1. Little Piquet had no quick team mates to contend with either.

we give every driver grief given the opportunity

Good thing too. They get paid enough!

From the podcast - I do agree with you on the Sutil-yellow flags thing.

If a car is stationary in a ‘Yellow Flag’ zone, then they are considered to be involved in the incident, and you should be at liberty to drive past (carefully).

Otherwise, the drivers would all have to queue up on every incident unsure if the car ahead was crashed, stalled, stopped or waiting - thats just crazy.

How long is acceptable to wait before the car ahead is officially out of the race? Do you need to wait for a ref to come and count them out? The stewards need to get real.

We see this sort of incident at Monaco most years, but I have never heard of someone falling foul of the yellows before.

I just feel sorry for the guy. It was plainly oblivious by the third race that his talents are nowhere near Formula One standards. It not his fault, after all almost anyone would jump at that chance. You really have to question Renault on this one.

I really hate how Renault has handled this. They really have let him take the full brunt of the heat. Not only that, I think they try to deflect some of the problems with the car by blaming the lad. Hopefully he can go to GP2/IRL/somewhere else and get his confidence/career back on track.

F1 without pressure? That’s something new to me. To give Hamilton some credit the pressure was on him last year and he, hmm, apart from the gravel trap thing in China had coped with pressure nicely.

Nice idea with Kubica trashing his tyres for the last couple of corners. I must admit I didn’t notice it. That’s the kind of original thinking that hasn’t been seen since Gilles Villeneuve.

In the days before radial tyres it used to be quite common to bounce off walls and barriers because the sidewalls of the crossply tyres bulged out and they could be bounced off barriers with little risk of damage to the wheel or car.

Alianora will never speak to me again if she thinks I jinxed Sutil. If it was only diffuser damage he should have carried on. I agree that Kimi did a fantastic job of keeping the car out of the wall. I still believe DC had a car breakage because it was such an odd accident. You can clearly see a puff of smoke or something at the right rear of the car just before he went off.

Dropio actually sounds quite good now so I think you should stick to that regardless of technicalities.

You could get a helium balloon with Sidepodcast on it floating above Christine. Get a big enough one and it will make climbing the hill a little easier.

according to colin kolles it was more than that sadly:

“We had some communication on the radio together, but then [sutil] said that he had a puncture. Unfortunately it was not only a puncture, the whole suspension broke.”

^^ The thing is about climbing the Goodwood hill, its not too bad… you get some cider/beer/german bratwurst on the way up and once you get there and stop going around in circles in the forest stage (like i have done many times) you get to the rally cars which you can get real close to as they enter the stage.. (I think the rally stage is just as good as the hillclimb) also is the SPodcast Vidcast going to be in HD like that other one you did ?

You have nothing to fear on that count, Steven. If Kimi happened to Adrian because he was jinxed, then about half the people watching the Grand Prix were responsible. That’s way too many people to keep track of, and besides I’d probably have to stop communicating with myself. As far as I’m concerned, the real blame belongs with the stewards for not issuing the punishment they thought Adrian was due for the yellow-flag infringements. I know there’s a fair bit of argument about whether any punishment was appropriate, but a quick drive-through would have put him well out of Kimi’s way when he made the error. Kimi would have gone onto a three nose-cone strategy, Adrian would have scored a point or two and everyone would have been content. Nice touch with the unintended prophecy in the live commentary though.

Is not there enough coverage of Lewis Hamilton already? I am after all interested in the race, and in the racing season. I have grown tried of ITV’s reporting of Lewis Hamilton and switched over to SpeedTV. I really do not need to be looking for another F1 website forum now….

Oh, yes, before I get bashed for not liking Hamilton, I do consider both McLaren and Ferrari to be the “Evil Empire” of Formula 1 and was an ex-BMW (Then know as Brabham-BMW), Williams/Jordan/Stewart, BAR, and now I am a Lost Sheep, meaning I really do not know who I root for (although I am liking the BMW team, now…) So please do not say I am jumping on a bandwagon.

I do not think attaching a helium filled balloon to Christine is a wise idea. For us to notice “Sidepodcast” typed on the ballon clearly, it has to be pretty big letters. With the lifting properties of Helium, I fear Christine might become airborne. It would be more entertaining for Christine or “Me” to suck in that said Helium gas, and start a conversation…

really? damn i didn’t hear that.

i agree with everything you just said there. last year they decided to go to the opening of some event in france that ended up being canceled anyhow.

ferrari are a pretty good benchmark for this. firstly the have to come farther than everybody else, secondly this kind of event isn’t usually their thing. and yet they’re going to turn up again.

i think i need a new favourite team. the cars are rubbish, the new website sucks and they aren’t as fan friendly as they used to be.

They have enough test drivers now, all of which are probably more than happy to go. :/ I was kinda looking forward to seeing Renault. I expected them to be there more than any other team. My reasoning behind this is that they had an F1 car at the kent show last year. I remember because you couldn’t get near it because of all the swarms of people. How odd that they can take a car to the Kent Show, where lets be honest it does not fit in, and not take it to Goodwood.

The older ones, like the 1994 and 2002 ones, do cover qualifying to a good degree, but the newer ones don’t even consider it very much. there may be one odd session they look at where something significant has happened, and is definately one area they could improve. One thing they could do is have a “no-commentary and music version”, which just gives us raw engine sounds.

If you like looking at the season in somewhat more depth, then they are worth it. But I definately think they could look at their past efforts and improve them using elements from them.

Speaking of engines, if you and Christine want them, I have the “Grand Prix Sounds” CD with 20 tracks of nothing but onboard and external F1 sounds. If you would like them, I can upload them somewhere and provide a link so you can download the file. I think if you added some of them into your podcasts, they would fit in nicely and add to the already huge awesomeness and entertainment they provide :D
