Take a Step into Our World
We’re going to try something a little bit different today, we’re planning to broadcast live video directly from Sidepodcast HQ.
Every week prior to a Grand Prix, we film Christine’s piece to camera for the video podcast Inside Track. We discussed what goes into that process earlier in the week and seeing as a few people found it interesting we thought we’d show you what actually goes on during recording. Oh yeah, and we decided to do it unedited and raw… we promise to watch our language.
Update: The live stream has now finished. We’ve updated the video player to show the recorded session.
We’re using Ustream.tv to handle the live streaming and you should be able to watch using the player above. Additionally, we’ve created a show profile so that even if you miss it, the video will be archived for all time.
I should add that we’re not planning on doing anything different than we normally would. So we won’t be explaining anything in detail or answering questions while we’re filming. The plan is to simply open the window and give everyone a peek inside.
Of course feel free to drop any questions in the comments and we’ll get to those. Also if you’d like to see more live stuff from us, please do say so. Similarly if you think it’s nothing more than a bunch of navel gazing nonsense, we’d like to know.
A major hat-tip goes out to Léo Laporte for the inspiration.
We’ll be live in five (always wanted to say that).

oh and a question for ya. im not sure how possible this would be, but does this mean you are able to do a live commentry/ thoughts now?

Hmm, it’s not out of the question, but I’m thinking it would be almost impossible to keep up with all the action, and live comment, and make notes for the shows and watch Live Timing, etc, etc.
There’s not enough room on my screen for that as well

That is a very good piont. lol that just shows I can come up with ideas, but i’m never really any good at thinking them through

Wow! You two are so inspiring! Thank you for all the effort you put into the Sidepodcast world.
Christine, do you use a tele-prompter or printouts? It sounded like you just print out what you are going to say and combine that with your excellent memory. Amazing!

could it be an alternative way to film Sidepodcast diaries?

I love the live idea. I think you should consider a live grand prix morning show.
I now see why Christine has to be taped to the floor as she is constantly moving between takes.
June 1st, 2008 at 02:12 #13 - me said:
could well be. i like your thinking there, the only issue is currently the diaries involve one person, i wonder if it would work with two?
that sounds like a brilliant plan. fitting it all in could be tricky, but i see where you’re coming from.

Brilliant you guys! …. If i may, you have made more improvements this season with a limited budget to almost none compared to the rest of the field on the grid… outstanding work!
Agreed….. first thing that came to mind… what better time to practice Live along with the field? Even more just maybe a “note” comparison @ the end of each session from all participants? Okay! enuff said please all

Absolutely great as always. You guys never miss a trick.
I can’t believe how few takes you did that in. I’m pretty rubbish at these things anyway but with the extra stress of live I can’t believe neither of you fell into fits of giggles or something that was hard to get back from. Seriously Pro!

Really great guys…
Christine you are a natural… keep this up and BBC will be at your door….

When we started, we relied solely on my memory, but then I started to want to say more so we came up with the high tech solution of printing it out and him holding it up behind the camera
Someone almost got the giggles, but we managed to recover to get the last take done. If I had my way, we’d only need to do each take once, but we were burned by the analogue tape screwing up one race and that’s why we do a safety. Better safe than sorry was never more appropriate.

Very entertaining and interesting, but it brought me out in a cold sweat because I always hate going on camera…
To get through so many fairly long speeches in so few takes is a great achievement. You put many professionals to shame, and I speak from some experience. Every so often one of the news broadcasters will decide they need an ‘expert’ and send a camera crew out to our offices – and invariably the TV journo can’t even ask a simple question without fluffing their line and having to do half a dozen takes…

I thought I would hate it, and I was a bit nervous, but I think I enjoyed it more, because it felt like I was actually talking to people rather than just at a camera. Although at the time we didn’t know if anyone was watching, of course!

I imagine a next step where you are there, Me is handing you bits of paper with new comments on it a la Grandstand of the 80s.
“And this just in Lou says that she like’s Jenson’s new beard. Don’t we all Lou.”

Sorry I just left a voicemail (sorry it was probably too late for tonight’s show). I just said Alex and realised afterwards that might not be enough information!!!

Funny, why is the ITV web site cheering for Jenson Button now, I must be on the wron….
Oh it IS Sidepodcast . You know Chrisitne and “Me”, if you start live broadcasting while the races are running and start insanly rooting for Hamilton, there would be absolutely no way I would be able to tell you apart from the ITV crew….

i don’t root for button all that much really, in the past i’ve supported alonso, and still do, but i’m also coming round to the idea that kimi really is the man.
i do support brawn, so because of that i hope honda do well. but in the past itv’s incessant following of button / whatever-girl-he-fancied-at-the-time put me off somewhat. exactly as they’ve done with lewis in fact.
damn shame they never got behind david, eh?
