Inside Track - Montreal

Sidepodcast TV logo

Formula One takes an early breather from its European tour and heads across the Atlantic to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix. Following swiftly on from the lottery that was the Monaco weekend, Sidepodcast takes a look at what this year’s sole North American race has to offer.

Last years event was the scene of one of motorsports most spectacular accidents, when Robert Kubica bounced off of a Toyota, a kerb and two concrete walls. Safety improvements have been made this year to prevent similar incidents, so join Christine on a hot lap of the track to make sure you’re up to speed with the changes for 2008, and everything else you need to know about racing in Canada.

Special thanks to Allianz SE, Toyota Motorsports GmbH, Red Bull Racing, Honda Racing F1 and RTV GmbH for the use of their video footage and photographs.

Thanks as always, the video of villeneuve singing was most entertaining, and my appetite for the weekend is most definately whet.

You referred to the barriers (of kubica fame) being fixed, hinting at the problem being that they were too far from the track.

From my recollection, I thought the problem that kubica encountered was that there was a section of concrete barrier that came back towards the circuit, which he hit not quite head on at massive pace.

Any ideas what exactly they’ve done?

I’ve heard that they’ve lowered several kerbs round the place, (incidentally including the one immediately before the “Champion’s Wall”). Maybe they think that there’s less chance of anyone getting launched now - the “prevention is better than cure” method.

    cheers kris.

christine covered a bit about this last week on f1 minute. but more detail has come to light since.

they’ve added a catch-fence to prevent cars jumping the wall and hitting another vehicle coming in the opposite direction and apparently the wall has been moved / re-profiled, but we’ve yet to see any pics to confirm exactly how it’s changed.

seems reasonable, i would’ve thought replacing a the offending wall with a tyre barrier would’ve helped too, but haven’t seen any mention of that as yet.

    yeah, i hear ya.

gp.com were saying earlier today that JV’s still up for a NASCAR drive. i guess that’s their gain and our loss.

his last couple of years in f1 were a major let down, but i enjoyed his on track battles with schumi. shame his manager was such a pollock, eh?

You have the order reversed. First be a champion (And the wall, oddly enough, is not picky of what you were a champion of, just ask Zonta….) Then it is quite permissable to smear it with your car’s paint and carbon fibre.

I have a funny feeling that Hamilton was deemed himself worthy at this year’s race, for winning the GP2 championship.

That’s the big deal about wildwife on the track? The real awesome wild-life can be found on Rue Cresent Street (there’s about three Universities close by, and the typical establishments that University studnets haunt line both sides of the street….

Yeah, B.A.R. was a mistake for JV but in the end he won the title and that’s what matters. He never had a winning car since 1997 and his motivation was suffering but I guess only Schu was always motivated despite earning huge amounts of money. Look at Kimster - the guy couldn’t care less this year. I dunno why he said Barcelona 2008 was his best race or something like that, his earlier wins were much more inspired, I’m not even talking about 2003 and his demon driving style back then.

And Scott Speed had some speed in him and some potential, this Tost guy toasted his brain, he & Bergie-boy only like Austrian and German drivers, Bourdais was lucky Todt Jr. was his manager and STR had Ferrari engine supply deal, otherwise they would’ve hired another German wunderkind.

Andretti III could do it or Danica for example, American presence in F1 is currently at a zero level. It’s a shame we lost Indy & North America remains unexplored territory for F1. I mean new tracks like Bahrain/China are not bad at all but for them it’s only circus and PR, grandstands are always empty and they only know something about Ferrari. Indy F1 race used to draw big crowds, even after 2005 it was not as bad as Malaysia or Bahrain. Mr E is obviously asking too much money for his services.

Yea - but they can only enhance their reputations if they drive for either Ferrari or Macca. The fact that Bourdais is basically still struggling should be a warning, if you are not in the right car it is very difficult to get the points. Even if you are in the right car you also need the luck as put Kovi’s is finding out.Put either of the above in a Red Bull or STR and they will probably be as successful as Coulthard!

    Christian Klein

I heard of Christian “Klien”, not sure if there ever was an F1 driver named “Klein”. Besides, Klien chose to quit Red Bull “family” and sell out to Honda before Bergie and Toastie could do anything. And in 2006 Toro Rosso situation was very different, the team was brand new, so to speak; they were using V10 and modified 2005 RBR chassis, so I doubt Klien felt interested in the team. And Mateschitz wanted Liuzzi/Speed line-up for marketing reasons. I think former F1 drivers must stay away from team ownership/management role because normally they end up ruining the whole operation (Prost, Suzuki, Lauda - I’m sure you can think of many more examples), Bergie must quit, sell the team to Todt Jr.

Scott Speed had reasons to complain, instead Bergie did everything he could to destroy Scott’s efforts. Vettel/Bourdais only pick up points when all the cars in front of them disappear during chaotic races, so did Liuzzi and Speed (well, he lost his point to DC in Australia 2006 but still). I don’t see great difference in their performance, although Bourdais seems like a nice guy, glad he’s racing in F1.

I don’t think either one would make it. Danica would bring the crowds but I don’t think she is good enough as a driver but is very savvy about marketing. I can see at team that needs to recruit and retain a lot of sponsors for survival (i.e. Williams, or whoever buys Toro Rosso) but I don’t see her doing well. Andretti the third hasn’t proven anything to me yet, nowhere near F1 quality so far.

If we want to get Americans to care about F1, look to NASCAR not Indy. People like Boris Said and Tony Stewart all have very solid road racing credentials, even if they are on the old side. The idea situation if some team could pry Dale Jr. from NASCAR into F1. Yeah he probably wouldn’t do well (that said, he has a pretty decent road record), but his defection would cause major waves in America. If he signed as a second driver for one of the teams, it would dominate the headlines in America and bring a major network to show and market Grand Prix

It’s a shame we lost Indy & North America remains unexplored territory for F1. I mean new tracks like Bahrain/China are not bad at all but for them it’s only circus and PR, grandstands are always empty and they only know something about Ferrari. The biggest black mark in the whole BernieMax era is how they have absolutely destroyed F1 in America. I may not remember it but there was a time when America cared. We have went from two great races in two wonderful locations (Watkins Glen and Long Beach), wonderful/devoted fan base, and lots of American involvement to absolutely nothing. I hope you enjoy your 40 pieces of silver Bernie and Max. (That right, this secular went biblical on you.)

Apologies - dyslexia at the keyboard. I really thought Christian was shoved out of the door see the extract from Wikipedia to confirm my belief.

“In 2006, Klien was unsuccessful in comparison to his more experienced teammate David Coulthard, as the Brit scored the team’s first podium and was more consistent then Klien throughout the season. In August 2006, it was confirmed that Klien would not stay with the Red Bull team for the upcoming 2007 season, or at least as a race driver, due to Red Bull’s signing of Mark Webber. After the 2 points finishes in Bahrain and Germany, there was some uncertainty as to where Klien would go next in his racing career, speculation suggested America as a logical choice for the Austrian, but he refused a ChampCar seat in a Red Bull-backed team for 2007, preferring to chase a Formula One drive with another team. As a result, the team announced that Klien had been dropped for the last three races of the season in favour of test driver Robert Doornbos.”

Replacing your driver with your test driver before the season ends is hardly any vote of confidence.

When Force India selected their drivers, Klien did best in the testing shoot out, but the team decided to side with experience and signed Fisichella.

Could be, I saw him testing at Jerez, he was doing nice lap times.

My point is: Scott Speed/Indy could still be a part of F1 and losing the only American F1 driver of the 21st century with 2 years of racing experience/the only American race on the calendar was a mistake.

My point entirely, until an American driver is good enough to get into one of two teams (and has the right connections and profiles) you are not going to see a huge involvement of America in F1.

I know Danica has expressed an interest in F1 but it would be a disastrous move, she will be nowhere. If drivers like Webber and Trulli cannot get wins, there is no ways Patrick and Andretti are going to do better. This season Robert Kubica has really shone - would love to see him in the same car as Hamilton cos I think he would be beat him. With his present car there is no ways he can really compete for the championship, yet he is as good as Massa, Raikkonen or Hamilton. People make a big deal of Kimi last year - the reality is he had slightly better luck and a really small edge on Massa during the second half of the season which was enough to get the championship. This year Massa had a slow start but his Monaco performance shows that he can drive (sure he made a mistake and the tactics proved wrong) but had the rain return it could still have been a Massa victory. The reality is really small difference return really big outcomes and when you add the luck factor it can get even more magnified. An example is Heidfeld - if he had not had his qualifying in Sepang stuffed by Kovi and Hamilton, a safety car incident at Spain (where he actually recovered spectacularly from to finish ninth) and Alonso driving into him at Monaco he would be very close to Robert in the points chase. The BIG difference is Robert can get his tyre up to speed and qualify better and therefore has an option of a better race strategy. Since Heidfeld cannot get the qualifying times he always carries more fuel at the start of the race and so far this is a less good race strategy. In the race generally Heidfeld is really consistent and fast and good at overtaking, but this is not enough to overcome qualifying issues - so people are saying he is not performing (still has more points than Kovi who is in a faster car). One key to Michael Schumacher’s success was being really fast on the in-lap before the pitstop - so he saved considerable time over his competitors.

    hi mike,

thanks for your quick response. we’ve had the problem intermittently since we moved the site over to your platform. at first we assumed it was related to the disk issues you experienced recently, but as that problem now seems to be resolved it must be something else.

every now and then, when a user tries to download a large media file (typically over 30MB) they suffer sticking downloads, whereby the browser thinks the file has been downloaded in full, but some of it is missing. sometimes clearing the browser cache and trying again resolves the problem, other times not so.

we know there’s nothing on the web page causing this as it also happens with podcast download clients like itunes.

in the case of yesterdays problem, it’s a 75MB file and it got stuck at the halfway mark. i think one user based in south africa had trouble and another was in the uk. i couldn’t repeat it this time, but i have experienced it in the past. it normally affects several people simultaneously.

if we move the offending file to another host, for example amazon s3, libsyn or blip.tv the issue goes away, and we’ve never had trouble on this score before we moved to you guys.

i’ll see if i can dig up any more info for you. incidentally, the rest of the hosting solution is fabulous, bandwidth is great, performance is great etc.
