Live Commenting: Canada - Free Practice 2
The first practice of the day saw the big guns sitting out most of the session, preferring no running to any wet running. Meanwhile, some of the smaller teams did a lot more leg work, with both of the Toyota’s running round and round almost continuously.
The rain played a minor role this morning and it looks set to sit out of the limelight for the remainder of the F1 day. What we learnt when the track finally dried out was the Ferrari’s were fast, but McLaren and especially BMW were very close behind.
It looks as though F1’s third fastest team have taken a conscious change of strategy at this track. Having spent the early part of the season building up to race day, BMW well and truly laid the gauntlet this morning. Watching their progress throughout FP2 will be especially interesting.
Free Practice 2 begins at 2pm local time (7pm in the UK). As before we’re following Formula 1’s timing machine in the sky as well as watching ITV’s online (and slightly delayed) video coverage. For some reason BBC 5Live have decided not to grace us with their presence on a Friday evening.
As ever, please do shout if you’re around and tell us who you are following this afternoon. Christine has returned and Sidepodcast is whole again.

BBC 1 for Doctor Who, BBC2 for F1. Fits in with their channel policy, if not necessarily with real people’s schedules. I don’t know about you, but my TV isn’t very good at handling two channels simultaneously and neither is my broadband line…

Piquet Jr.’s confidence before the start of the season was clearly nothing more than bravura born of not knowing the true difficulty of being an F1 race driver. I can see now why Pat Symonds may think he has a confidence problem - without the bravura, he’s got nothing to replace it yet. The question is whether he will be able to retrieve the situation in his own head before Flavio chucks him out…

Well, with this crazy High-Speed, massive braking circuit, home of the “Canada” braking system, maybe Honda being last is a good thing. After all, if your doing 300 km/h and the rains come enough to get all the oil and junk out of the tarmac and onto the surface, no amount of braking is going to save you from any wall. Maybe going 280 tops will get you around a lap. (or 70 laps).
I would be on the floor laughing if both MCLaren’s and Ferrari when out becasue they where going too fast for the track conditions itself. Just like Monaco, a forenight ago but now with some decent speeds.

People are starting to do PBs and Raikkonen’s done his best Sector 1. Something’s clearly improved - and the slight drop in track temperature cannot be the full explanation.

Hamilton looks pleased with his P1, though Kubica did well to get P2.
Coulthard did not do well to run over that run-off area.

Rubens managed 13th so Jenson must be having troubles with set up or something…

Thank you, Jordan. I’d been wondering about that all session. Good to see someone’s faith in DC rewarded.
me, I know Canada’s the toughest track for brakes, but that’s wierd. Hope they don’t solve it the way Williams and Toyota did in 2004 - they put on illegally-large brake ducts and all got thrown out for their trouble.

we’ll of course be back tomorrow before 3pm UK time for free practice 3 - that’s 10am in canada.
