F1 Digest - Canada Qualifying

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

It was a tough day out there today, with the track literally crumbling under the force of our guys and their wheels. Vettel, Webber and Button all had issues, but we cover everything from FP3 and Qualfiying in today’s F1 Digest.

Free Practice 3

Vettel and Bourdais both had terrible sessions, with the walls appearing to be Toro Rosso magnets.

Qualifying

The track slowly disintegrated, leaving the top ten really showing the men from the boys.

Conclusions

Some are convinced tomorrow will be a nightmare and the race will be completely undriveable, others are hoping the dodgy conditions will work in their favour.

Unbelievable! I was reading Hamilton’s explanation on autosport.com - check this out, the guy was boasting boastfully, so to speak. Dude, I’m lost for words.

“I am not fussed,” Hamilton told reporters after qualifying. “It is not going to cause me any problems as I know how to drive around it now. For sure it is better if there isn’t a problem and if they can fix it, then great.

“What can I say? I put together a clean lap and everyone else was struggling with the track’s poor surfaces and I found a solution,” he said.

“At the end of the day if there is a problem, it is my job to find a solution and get around it as quick as possible. So I am not surprised that I have that big a gap there, because I can see other people would probably not have found it. So that is why I am on pole.”

“It is one of my skills. I am able to adjust to whatever conditions I have, and that is probably why I am so strong in the wet. I feel at home, I feel comfortable. And it wasn’t tough, to be honest.”

What happened in Bahrain (2008) then or China last year? Senna would say insane things but it looks like HAM will beat the Brazilian in controversial comments.

    He said what?

    :O *falls off chair*

wow Lewis is one modest guy ;)

What he failed to mention is he is the only driver who has trouble looking after his tyres, surely that takes some kind of unique talent……

good grief! It’s one thing to say that - but he has 70 odd laps to do on that surface tomorrow. If he losses it on the marbles in the race there will be some serious egg on face.

You just know it’s gonna happen now don’t you?

sounds like mind-games to me, but i think he’s alienating the GPDA with that attitude.

It is shocking, but then again, Hamilton has every right to be confident. He did a superb job today in qualifying. However, I only wish he would be confident with a little more class. I would have been fine if he had just left it with, “What can I say? I put together a clean lap and everyone else was struggling with the track’s poor surfaces and I found a solution,” but when he dwells on how he is so naturally talented or whatever, it comes off as if he already has a couple of championships on his belt.

    Hi all,

I figured I’d post a quick message here this morning. I have a bad combination this weekend of work, and “multiviewing” between Euro2008 and formula one, and no internet access at home :(

I know it was on the podcast but I do love the quote from markwebber

I’m not sure how they’re going to manage with the track tomorrow, but everyone’s in the same boat. I think we’ll need to use motocross bikes, as it’s not realistic in a Formula One car, you’ll need to drive on the grass or on the inside of the hairpin.”

re: the video of the Monaco grand prix (formula1.com)

The model they show just after Flavio - is the “letter-turner” from the italian version of the tv show “wheel of fortune”. (yeah not strictly f1 news but i thought i’d share). I’m not saying she’s had plastic surgery, but if you ever wanted to include a photo on a podcast, it would have to be the enhanced podcast, if you know what I mean.

I’m still sad watching Sutil get taken out :(

In the video you can see Hamilton take the win, and his deserved celebrations, and a quick show of the delighted Kubica who placed second, but they don’t show Massa who got a very respectable 3rd. He had a pretty good weekend - since when do we only care about the top 2 positions? Someone doesn’t like Ferrari?

it’s a long post, but this is to make up for lack of commenting during the race. have fun without me!

Well done Christine…another professional reference to marmots…

You do an excellent job of coming over as authoritative and unbiased… you also hit all the high, and low, spots in a really short time… f1minute has honed your skills.. great stuff…

I think the saying that Lewis should be wary of is that old footie pundits cry… form is temporary but class is permanent… and even if he is the class of the field driving wise it isn’t classy to tell the others that you think you are… it shouldn’t be necessary Lewis…

Actually however annoyingly good Michael was did he ever say stuff like this?… or did Senna?… they may have thought it but they let others say it for them… please can someone in the Macca PR team get the very very talented Lewis to put a Nomex sock in it….

I am going to possibly annoy people here, but actually I prefer Hamilton being honest, if boastful. Much better than the false modesty that he put on for much of last year. For sure the driver is good, he is now telling us how good and looking at qualifying (7/10s of sec is a huge gap) who are we to argue? It is not classy to do so, and he will become even less liked by the majority of other F1 drivers, and rather worse he is not helping to improve track safety.

I think actually this is the problem, Macca PR is not the most subtle - they push to get headlines at every possibly excuse and it may even be that Lewis is primed to say these things as a mind game and gain advantage over other drivers.

What first turned me off Schumacher was something he said at Jerez in 1994 - something along the lines of ‘I should be world champions as Damon Hill is not good enough…’

A couple of races later, we saw Schumacher claim the championship by crashing into Hill.

As for Senna - we did see a few crass comments over the years ;)

Lewis’ comment looks to me like a case of engaging mouth before brain. I will not change my oppinion of Lewis based on one comment - but really, the time to shoot your mouth off is after the race, not after quali.

when I look out of the window I suspect it will rain … it rained yesterday, the rain started right after the qualifying finished. when I say right after, I mean about the time the cars returned to pitlane :-) not a heavy rain, just showers here and there, and it was actually quite refreshing in that hot weather. it also rained yesterday early morning , probably cooling down the track quite a bit, than it heated up once the sun came up … in any casy this is a cracking track :-)

what also happened was a thick cloud covering the sun towards towards the end of Q2 and when that happened the temperatures immmediately signigficantly dropped.

last night while eating out and people watching in the city centre I could feel several strong gusts of wind, almost taking my beer away, and that I did not like :-)

I think the weather can be a big factor today, it has been very changeable during the weekend

but nothing seems to bother people here, they party mad, the F1 atmosphere in Montreal is unbeleiveable :-)

thanks wolf, appreciate the updates. sounds like you’re having a great time.

didn’t realise we missed the rain yesterday by such a tiny margin, must keep an eye on the wind today too.

It seems to me Lewis is simply playing mind games with the other drivers rather than trying to tell the world that he is the best driver on the grid. It is often the case in F1 that what anyone says is not what they mean but what they trying to do is distract others from seeing what they are really doing. For example if McLaren have decided on a really short first stint for some clever tactical reason then they would obviously have given Lewis less fuel which would account for the margin. However in order to stop the opposition catching on to this tactic they have Lewis mouth off about how fabulous he is and that he has found some clever way of driving round the problems everyone else has.

One of the problems with the current rules is that in reality we don’t know if his lap was astoundingly good or if he simply had less weight to carry.

It seems Lewis has become a target whatever he does. Until yesterday he was pilloried for false modesty and now he is pilloried for boasting. Maybe people want all the drivers to be like Kimi and say nothing. No personality, no insight just morose mono-syllabic emptiness.

personally i’d like more drivers to be like kimi, yes.

i’d really like them to be themselves, to not pander to the media or the pr people, to go out on wild drinking binges when they feel like it, to be exciting, dramatic and interesting. most importantly i’d like them to be an actual human being, not something manufactured in the soulless mind of ron dennis.

i’d also like drivers to be more like a straight-talking, no nonsense mark webber. honest and to the point, often to the detriment of his own abilities or team.

i have no time for false modesty or boasting, sadly. maybe lewis could find a middle ground… maybe not?

Hmmm…. Lewis modest… sorry Steve but I’m not sure when that has been a problem… I think we’d just like him to have the confidence and class to let others shout about his own talents…. but if he is incredibly light and it’s all about a mind game for this afternoon then I will modify my distaste for his latest bragging a little …

Maybe people want all the drivers to be like Kimi and say nothing. No personality, no insight just morose mono-syllabic emptiness.

And if you really think that the a WDC whose obvious second career wasn’t as a Blue Peter presenter has no personality then you haven’t been looking or listening hard enough…

Kimi is bright and great fun in private but he hates the PR stuff and is uncomfortable in the public eye… you may not like that but it’s certainly not an unnatural reaction to the media…

I accept that grid full of Kimi’s wouldn’t be ideal but neither would a grid of Lewis’s…. there is room for both… and I actually prefer the Kimi approach myself…

Come to think of it - maybe LH was just having fun? Joking around a little bit?

Last year Kova jovially said he hated Piquet and the next day all the websites were screaming about how HK wants to cut NP’s throat.

I hear the track is gradually falling apart even without F1 cars running; should be interesting today.

The other possibility is that Lewis is trying the old Stirling Moss wet weather trick. Stirling used to go round and tell all the other drivers how much he was looking forward to the race when it was wet. He believed that he had most of them beaten before the start because they were convinced he loved the wet and was much better than them in it.

I am also reminded of Keke Rosbergs comments at Dallas 1984 when the surface literally broke into big lumps. Like now a lot of the drivers spent all the time from the problem starting until race time going round moaning to all and sundry and on that occasion they were all threatening to strike. Keke was asked why he wasn’t complaining said that although he knew they shouldn’t be racing on that track there was no point getting worked up about it because come race time all the drivers would be strapped in and ready to go. As usual he was right and of course Keke won the race by 20 odd seconds. All the disruption to the other drivers’ preparation achieved nothing.

  28. June 8th, 2008 at 5:22 pmLadySnowcat said:

You must think the other guys are totally brainless… I think they are just speaking the truth… none of them have said they shouldn’t race Steven…just that the track isn’t really up to it… and I think everyone agrees with that…

  29. June 8th, 2008 at 5:27 pmSteven Roy said:

All I am saying is that there are similarities. The problem is nothing like as bad as Dallas and the drivers response is not as drastic but there are a few examples of the history of the sport of one driver taking the line that he either likes adverse conditions or has found a way to deal with them as a way to gain a psycological advantage.

I tend never to take anything anyone says in F1 at face value and especially if what is said is controversial.

Now have your say...
