The Le Mans 24 Hour Thread

Franck Montagny in his Peugeot FAP

Actually, the title may be a bit misleading. I’m not staying awake for 24 hours, not even for Franck. This thread is here for any Le Mans discussion, although it’s not aiming to replicate the Live Comment phenomenon of an F1 race weekend. If you spot anything interesting over the course of the 24 hours, then drop it in the comments and we can all try and stay informed.

So far, the online sources we’ve uncovered are:

Live Timing
Autosport Live
Radio Le Mans
Speed TV à la TVU Networks (look for Wheels under the Sports category)
Planet Le Mans
Justin TV (Mac friendly)

We all know that I’m rooting for Mr Montagny in second position for Peugeot, and I’ll be on edge and snappy until it’s over.

It’s gonna be a great weekend at Sidepodcast HQ!

LMP1 - Peugeot v Audi, but I hope Peugeot gets it. They deserve it after all their hard work.

LMP2 - Should be a Porsche walkover, especially with those RS Spyder. Hell, in the American Le Mans Series, they’ve even beat the Audi’s outright!

GT1 - Corvette v Aston again, I want the works DBR9s to kick Chevy’s ass! :D BUT - watch out for the Saleen, qualified 2nd in class, a dark horse this weekend.

GT2 - Another tight battle between Ferrari and Porsche, but I think the IMSA Performance Porker will get it. The 911s are outnumbered by the Ferrari’s 7 to 3, but the 911s are better in a straight line. Spykers will be nowhere, just there to make up the numbers.

One stint is usually an hour, but some cars do tend to double-stint their drivers if they think they’re doing a good job.

I think the reason why the ex-F1 drivers are doing as well as they car is because these LMP1 cars are very very similarly laid out to the F1 cars, including the steering wheels, so I reckon it’s not taken them too long to get used to it.

It looks funny on TV, Le Mans is really about F1 losers getting their kicks. And silent smelly piggy diesel racing makes it even worse. The only challenge there is to keep the car going and not to fall asleep.

Anyway, I checked out Montagny’s website and in my opinion he beats all other drivers’ websites. It’s pure lunatic asylum, but it’s cool.

yeah, the rules are generally that you’re not allowed to change tyres or driver until all the fuel has gone into the car. They also change brake pads every 2-3 stops.

What feed are you listening to? Did thr comentators not mention it?

How long does each driver tend to go for before switching?

One tank of fuel lasts about 40 minutes. the top teams will doulbe - or even trebel stint their drivers.

One thing to watch out for - the rules state you cannot change your tyres at the same time as refueling. You have to wait untill the fuel has gone in before chaning the tyres. And with only 4 machanics and 2 air guns, it takes about 20 seconds to change tyres. Therfore the teams will try to double stint the tyres (tre
    bel stint at night)

Should be tuned into Radio Le Mans.

Another thing to note - if the car is in the ‘pit lane’ then you can only have 4 machnics working on the car, but if you take it into garage, you can have as many people working on it as you like - so expect to see cars wheeled in and out of the garages during the race

With an 8.5 mile lap, they run tow safty cars, half a lap apart. However you have to hope they go at the same speed, and pull off at the same time

Already because the Dome chucked oil out one of the pugs spent some time in the piy getting its window cleaned. Also the front window of the pug is really small so night driving in rain could be difficult.
