Live Commenting: France - Qualifying
This mornings one hour practice essentially told us nothing in terms of who has pace and who’s having problems. Without wanting to pick on the guy too much, you know something’s not right when the first name on the timing sheet is Nelson Piquet Jr.
There did seem to be less off-track rallying action today, with the majority of drivers figuring out the quickest way around this place is to stick to the asphalt. The soft tyre appears to be causing headaches up and down the pitlane, with the quickest time being set on the harder of the available compounds. That’ll probably be the story of qualifying this afternoon. Who can make the soft rubber last a single flying lap?
In terms of the midfield, Lewis Hamilton will be the man to watch. McLaren have a variety of strategies they can use to help Hamilton fight back from his 10-place penalty, from fuelling him light and fighting through the traffic, to going long and bagging as many points as he can. We’ll have a better idea which way the team will go in less than two hours.
Keep an eye also on the BMW drivers. Yesterday Kubica’s running was curtailed by a misfire while today the cars look a handful, but they’ll be hoping to build on the win in Canada and may try something aggressive for tomorrows race.
Qualifying starts at 1pm in the UK (2pm local time). We’re watching ITV’s qualifying show and build up, which is available online and don’t forget Bernie’s idea of acceptable web coverage on f1.com too. Radio 5Live will also have commentary from 1pm.
As always, we’re keen to know where you’re watching and all your qually predictions.

Where do you think these guys will be in qualifying not taking their grid positions?
Hamilton is fast on this track - I suspect they will put a lot of fuel in for the last qualifying (they will want him to get into the final)!
Is this a track that is heavy on tyres or did Bridgestone just get it wrong with the soft tyres?

June 21st, 2008 at 12:41 pmScott Woodwiss said:
This is how I see it:
Lewis will look to try and get pole, which means he’ll be 11th, the best possible place he can get. We know he can make great starts, and if he does tomorrow then he’ll make up 2, 3 or maybe 4 places. Then he’ll use that light car to get himself up onto the back of the leaders and pressure them. By running light throughout the race, and maybe 3 stopping, he could be on course for a podium.
Nico on the other hand will try to get into Q3. If not, then the team might tell him to not make Q3 on purpose so that they can fuel him heavy and make up places while everyone else is pitting. I think the best he can manage is a solid points finish.

While I think Robert is a very complete driver - I really doubt if he can get more than ONE more win this year with the BMW Sauber - it is still slightly off the speed of Ferrari and Macca! That does not exclude him from Driver’s Championship - if he finishes in virtually all races in fourth or higher. That would be my target if I was he. With only two points difference between winning and second it favours being consistent.

There are a few more clouds than there were in FP3 this morning but it’s still pretty clear.
I’ve uploaded some pics from FP3 but won’t be going out on-track again now – Darren left his tabard at the Chateau so I’ve given him mine.

I could see from practice that Kimi had the advantage over Massa and Ferrari a big advantage over the other teams.

It looks like Lewis is not on a one stopper then. He was 0.1s down in Q2 and 0.5s down in Q3 so not a lot of fuel more thant the Ferraris.

ITV are saying how wonderful Lewis is and they haven’t a clue about his fuel…
He’s probably on fumes…
And they mention Kimi in 2005 but Lewis isn’t Kimi…

Yet again Kovi is just nowhere near Lewis! Pressure can only get worse - you are in the best or second-best team and you are far down the grid!

My predictions for tomorrow:
1 - Kimmi
2 - Massa
3 - Kubica
There will be a lot of good battles involving Hamilton during the race:
Hamilton x Heidfeld, Hamilton x Piquet (revisiting those GP2 battles) and I believe Hamilton x Alonso, but this last battle I don’t think Lewis will win.
I’m expecting that Alonso will finish somewhere between 4th and 6th, Hamilton between 5th and 7th and Piquet between 6th and 8th along with Heidfeld. Their positions will depend on Kov and Trulli races.
My fantasy racers team is Massa, Kubica, Heidfeld and Vettel. Not as good as I was expecting :/

Someone from Honda was quoted this week saying they might not even bother with KERS because it is not compulsory
?!
Isn’t KERS a key factor for 2009? What on earth are they doing?! For a team that’s so enviromentally friendly, they’re missing a big thing here.

Alonso has the same race fuel as ferrari’s! PROOF:
Raikkonen’s fastest time (no fuel): 1.15.133
Massa’s fastest time (no fuel): 1.15.024
Alonso’s fastest time (no fuel): 1.15.483
Raikkonen’s Q3 time (with race fuel): 1.16.449
Massa’s Q3 time (with race fuel): 1.16.490
Alonso’s Q3 time (with race fuel): 1.16.840
Raikkonen’s difference between fastest time and Q3 time: 1.316 seconds
Massa’s difference between fastest time and Q3 time: 1.466 seconds
Alonso’s difference between fastest time and Q3 time: 1.357 seconds.
So rounding the difference to the nearest tenth as any less is pointless in comparing, Alonso should have more fuel than raikkonen but less than massa. Renault obviously capitalised on the three days of testing!

Joe,
The point you make was pretty much exactly the comment I left on the article. If Honda think there is nothing to gain by running KERS why would anyone else run it.
Of course the really stupid point about KERS is that McLaren had a system up and running 6 or 7 years ago and Max banned it before they could race it.
June 21st, 2008 at 2:15 pmme said:
kers is potentially a very heavy solution. to start with it may not be faster than running without it.
reading between the lines, it’s only a matter of time before everyone will run it.

Sorry, I was being disgracefully non-specific - I left the comment on Doctor Vee’s (?) site, where Scott posted it.
Darren’s schoolboy error was caused by careless trouser-choice strategy – he left the tabard in the ones he was wearing yesterday!
In other news, much less tukka-tukka-tukka from Kimi in the press conference today. After Thursday’s effort Bob Constanduros (who’s sitting three places to my right) was tearing his hear out as he tried to transcribe it…

Stuart,
I left this on another thread yesterday but you may have missed it.
It looks like the work is being done by Les Amis du cicuit de Gueux.
http://www.amis-du-circuit-de-gueux.fr/-Welcome-
There site is written a bit in Franglais but seems to be easily understandable. It looks like they became involved with the track in 2003 but the first actual work was two years later.
The seem to be running events at the circuit.

Absolutely - Renault has been counter-acting rumours that they have stopped developing the 2008 car - I think this is proof.
I wish they would make KERS mandatory for next year - but since Ferrari has not bothered much FIA will support them but not doing so!

the 10 position penalty applies to the start of the race - so technically AFTER qualifying. Hamilton did qualify 3rd - he just won’t start there.

I’ll put that to him.
When I was covering the ALMS a few years ago I worked very closely with a delightful American photographer called Regis Lefebure. But Regis was terrible for faffing – he’d have all his gear in an enormous black coffin-shaped case which he would unpack and repack at least five times before heading off to the circuit in the morning.

Guys what do you think about strategy for pitting in the race…
Ferrari nearly always pit one lap after the other… although Kimi has occasionally stretched it to two or three…
Let’s assume they are on the standard basis… but Kimi has saved a lap of fuel… by aborting his much faster last session…
So are they now on the same lap… if so …
