Live Commenting: Britain - Free Practice 2
FP2 comes kicking and screaming into the world at two o’clock this afternoon, and the sun’s gone into hiding. We’re a bit chilly at the moment and the wind’s picked up. It feels a little like the weather we had during testing last week, so Fissi might want to be careful out there.
Alonso’s earlier blowup caused much havoc, especially with Massa’s rear end. We’re hoping for a whole lot of on track action as teams and drivers play catchup for the lost time.
Vettel gets much respect for his mornings effort, while Piquet seems to be on a high after his points finish in France. Will Ferrari have time to get Massa running again though?
Today’s second 90 minute session should give us a better idea as to what’s what this weekend. From 2pm in the UK we’ll be following all the action somewhere near a fast section of the track, while live timing details the facts and ITV provides the video coverage.
Shout if you’re around this afternoon, we’ll be checking as frequently as possible.

Force India were in enough trouble at the end of last session. If the wind’s got worse since, it’s going to be a worrisome hour-and-a-half. Mind you, there’s about an hour-and-a-half for the wind to fade again.

Hi all.
I am currently sitting in a car park in sunny(honest) Manchester having just come out of the BMW Pit Lane Park. If you get the chace to see this you should go. It is fabulous. I saw the first show of the weekend and they were babying the F1 car to make it last so I guess in a Sunday show the driver would be a bit more aggresive. There are so many things to see and so many people working in it that it must cost a fortune for three days.
I think I can top Christine’s story about the car stickers. They had some problems with the toilets so they had to switch some of the female toilets to male. They guy had a ruler out measuring exactly where to put the male symbol on the door.

Jarno really doesn’t like Silverstone. I guess it comes mainly from the accident he had whilst at Renault. Up until that point, he was driving for a top team and giving Fernando Alonso a run for his money.
He’s just been speaking to Peter Windsor on Speed, who pointed out that Trulli’s pace today was a little surprising given his performance in testing. Windsor said that this showed how Silverstone changes from week-to-week, but Jarno responded - sounding somewhat unimpressed - that Windsor was wrong, and the changes were more like minute-by-minute.

“SC system to be tested again today
By Jonathan Noble Friday, July 4th 2008, 13:31 GMT
Formula One drivers are to conduct another test of the new safety car system after second free practice for the British Grand Prix.
The FIA is looking at ways of introducing a minimum sector time to cover safety car incidents as a way of ending the need to close the pits to prevent drivers racing back for more fuel and tyres.
It comes after complaints from drivers and teams about the unfair way some drivers are penalized if they need to come in for fuel at the very moment the pit lane is closed because of a safety car…”

By the way, I’ve gone onto Windguru (search for F1 Silverstone) and it’s forecasting a considerable amount of rain for the start of the race.
Qualifying is predicted to have scattered showers, with the majority of the rain falling in Free Practise 3. Overcast conditions throughout.
Wind increases for the rest of the weekend, but not by much.

I see Christine and ‘me’ had a bit more success posting than I had. It would have helped if I had got the session times right instead of being an hour early. I posted a comment but no-one else was around so I thought I would start my journey up the M6 and stop at the services for the last half hour of FP2. Unfortunately the traffic had other ideas. So I dived into a service station to find out why the traffic was a a stand still. The mobile signal was as good as non-existant which is ridiculous on a major motorway and by the time I had discovered the cause of the hold up and when it was going to clear I got back to sidepodcast just in time for my battery to die. I really must find a 12 volt power supply.

aw bad luck Steven. You’ll be able to join us for the rest of the weekend though wont you? I may/may not be able to join in for live commenting for quali… depending whether i get out of my commitments or not…. but def will not be around for FP3 :(.

Yeah. I will be here for the rest of the weekend. It was worth missing Friday practise to visit Pit Lane Park. Aside from the F1 and F BMW cars doing the displays they let you play with everything else they had. They had two cars for pit stop challenges. First thing Friday morning before the place had been open an hour they had three guys changing a wheel in 4.3 seconds. There were at least a couple of school trips there. It was really funny watch 8 year old girls changing wheels including using the air hammer to slacken and tighten the nut. Those rear wheels are so light it is unbelievable. Much lighter than the alloys on any road car. Even with the tyres on they are feather light.
They had yet another F1 car where you could go and get photos posing with their models. BMW supplied the photographer and printed the pictures. They had a ‘glass’ F1 car that you could re-fuel. Those fuel hoses are heavy and awkward even when they are empty.
We have all seen exploded diagrams of F1 cars. They had an exploded F1 car that you could go a poke around. Absolutely nothing was off limits and the staff(dozens of them) encouraged everyone to go and do the things you always get told not to touch.
They had a pitlane stand complete with monitors displaying data from one of this year’s races and head phones so that you could listen in to the discussion between the pits and the drivers.
They had three simulator racers where you could go and race the other 2 for 2 laps of the Turkish track. They also had a load of driver fitness stuff including this weird concentration competition thing. You stuck two fingers into a clip(I assum it measured pulse or conductivity or pressure applied) and in between the two people was a metal track with a 2 inch metal ball. The person with the most relaxed concentration moved the ball towards their opponent. I need to try to read up on it because I don’t understand it at all.
The had Vicky Butler-Henderson and some bloke I didn’t recognise doing the commentary.

@Lou - Lewis has asked for people to support him for this weekend* - so I am doing my bit and my dog will support Jenson and approves of the new helmet and hoping it will bring him much luck in the race - he needs it considering the car.

Rich, asking for support? surely thats not a good sign…. shouldn’t he already have the support? Getting his Dad to pull out of the triathalon for him… bad bad move! He doesn’t help himself at all. I am not impressed, considering the race was gonna be for charity and everything. Mclaren need to sew his mouth together… just let him drive the car. I would like him more if he didn’t say anything

Sounds like some politicians we have. For this weekend I am hoping for a British driver to win the British GP - especially as its 60 years of Silverstone and 80 years of the BRDC. Even more especially since Silverstone has lost the 2010 GP and the announcement was made during the race weekend which I consider to be very very mean. I guess Lewis has the best chance for a British driver to win. My dog will support Jenson as usual and we will both keep a lookout for DC as well!

It would be great for Lewis to win, this weekend of all weekends, BUT i couldn’t stand all the press that would go with it….It’s sad how that it’s only been a season and a 1/2 and already one of the main reasons i don’t want him to win is because of the media… I’m hoping for rain… and/or a big crash into turn 1 taking out many of the front runners… leading the way for DC to get another podium
That would be brilliant…. as i said i am hoping… I’m very good at being hopefull
July 5th, 2008 at 11:24 amRich said:
While I am not sure about your methods* to get DC on the podium a podium finish would be great. I am lucky I do not have to deal with the British Press if Lewis were to win so I can support him and a British car to win the British GP.
*I will still be getting by rain dance outfit on and dancing from the roofs of the flats.
