Live Commenting: Britain – Qualifying

With a wet start to FP3 and a dry end we were treated to some great insight as to how the cars may fare in Qualifying this afternoon. It’s all weather dependant of course – at the moment it’s cold and windy but hopefully will be a dry start to Q1.

Alonso finished at the top of the sheets, and with the Renault looking particularly good in the changing conditions, he’ll be hoping for more of the same this afternoon.

As for the rest we’re probably not in the best position to be passing comment, but with Kimi in 9th and Kubica in 19th, we’re as confused as anyone else as to who’ll have the upper hand this afternoon.

Qualifying starts at 1pm in the UK. Lord knows where we’ll be watching, but we’re going to miss all of ITV’s build up, available online. Don’t forget Bernie’s token fan guesture on F1.com too. Radio 5Live will also have commentary from 1pm with Davidson in the box.

As always, we’re keen to know where you’re watching and all your qually predictions.

Good Afternoon everyone, and if the weather was the same in Silverstone as in the North East, it will be one wet track.

I currently have Kimi Raikkonen as my pick for pole, with Kovalainen, Hamilton then Massa.

So does Autosport say anything about the wind? I’m in Northampton area, about 20 miles north/east of the track, and we haven’t had any rain since early today but the wind is really starting to pick up here, and seems to be heading in the direction of Silverstone?

Brands Hatch signed a contract a few years ago and found out after they had signed that there was not a hope of upgrading Brands. They did a deal where they kept the rights and Silverstone held the race. Then they discovered that they couldn’t make any money doing that so they bailed out of the deal.

Upgrading Donington is a massive job. They need to build a whole new loop into the circuit and the facilities are non-existant. I expect that the 2010 race will be at Silverstone.

as itv pointed out, lewis did something he didn’t do this time last year – tested at silverstone. i think this will help him out this weekend, and could probably be the reason why he didn’t succeed last year.

I agree with Christine – Macca are going to pull all stops to get Lewis on pole – will use an aggressive strategy. It would boost his confidence, even if it might slightly compromise the race strategy – but with uncertain weather – what is the best race strategy?

I think Silverstone should just let Donington get on with it, and if Donington can’t delivery then they could get the race back from them a lot cheaper. Silverstone need to stop playing Bernie’s little games. In the Batch Hatch mess both tracks lost money and Bernie was the only one laughing all the way to the bank.

Bernie HAS to have a British GP as a lot of the teams are based here and without a GP here would there still what to be part of F1 and then where would that leave little Bernie and his evil side kick?

Personally, I would have preferred Croft ;) but Donnington isn’t that great a track. Its on the short side, like Davidson said of 5Live, about 1m-1m10 the time will be. Tilke is presumably going to end up completly wrecking the track.

I don’t see what difference it makes to the teams if there is a GP in Britain or not. Would they still want to be in F1? Of course they would. That is their business and unless they have a fully structured alternative chmpionship to slide into every one of them would go bust inside a year if they pulled out of F1.

I think Ferrari are going to be very competitive today – still will be the fastest cars – but I think Lewis will pull something special for Macca with a pole and at least podium position. I do not expect BMW Sauber to do much – in all probability they are working on their 2009 car, they are unlikely to lose their third position in the constructor’s championship. I feel sorry for Robert though, but the team has to be realistic and focus on attainable goals and a championship this year is not one of them.

    Afternoon all,

I’m with Steven on this. What they have to do to Donington is, in effect, to level it and start again. It’s not long enough, it’s not wide enough, and there are massive earthworks to be done (eg getting rid of the hill and that vestigial bridge near the Old Hairpin). The garage facilities are nowhere near good enough. And that’s before we get into the question of access/parking, which is poor if you’re going to a club or national-level event, let alone a world-class one.

Makerting, you can’t market a product to your home country if you don’t have an easy means to do it. I would like tothink that ever the teams would have to kick Bernie out and take over the running of F1 themselves out start they own championship.

No it was just a minor mis-calculation of the speed he could exit the corner at. He was probably only travelling 2 or 3 mph faster than optimum. That’s the thing about motor racing. Minor errors don’t have minor consequences. Had there been a tarmac run off it could have cost him 0.1 second.

    Christine’s Mother-in-Law

This is my challenge – as you are Christine’s Mother in Law you have to be nice to her (its the politically correct thing to do) and get to know her (its the practical thing to do). I happen to know that Christine’s most played band on last.fm is U2 – so here is my challenge…

To get as many U2 titles into the comments for tomorrow’s race.

The neat thing is everyone else can compete to see if they can beat you. I have explained this to me dog and she reckons she can beat you in this K9 challenge, unless she gets bored with the race and goes to sleep in the under-the-sink kitchen cupboard (that happens when Jenson retires). Today she seems to have an interest in Lewis – not entirely sure of her alliances – she is female, fickle, prone to rapid mood swings and only use Mac computers!

The Finn looked strong throughout but in qualifying he was away and gone.”

Bad news? Was Joe just joking? It can only be taken as a joke, HK on pole – fine, what’s wrong with it? Maybe he was referring to PR stunts – British team/British driver on pole, was that Macca’s target?

sadly I don’t think he is… Ron Dennis didn’t look happy at the end of quali… and the only reason I can think of is that Lewis didn’t do any better and get pole.

A guy I knew went to the Jim Russell racing drivers school in the late 70s and the Lotus transporter turned up and asked if they could use the circuit for an hour. They wheeled out the car and Ronnie Peterson appeared to drive it. Imagine havine your first shot in an FFord and Ronnie Peterson is in the same pit lane with an F1 Lotus.

I like the idea of the South of France. Nice weather. A short commute from my Monaco appartment. Bernie onside and we would probably get a good deal from the French governement as they are always looking to have a French team. They would probably chuck in a few state owned sponsors. We would need a French test driver to keep them happy.

WHy do I just know Christine will go for this plan.

We need to decide where we are going to base the team and build our state of the art factory. Somewhere in England like everyone else or maybe Spain because all the testing happens there anyway or we could build it next to Paul Ricard in the south of France and get Bernie on our side because it will be good publicity for his track.

Silverstone? Well, we all know about 2010, Catalunya is good, I can give you the car settings for that, but Paul Ricard?

Crap, Now my driver is giving me headaches by suggesting a test track where I do not have any default car set-ups. I will use “Monza” settings and see how well he can hold on to the car off the straight….

I am talking about where to base the whole factory. We can test anywhere. Besides Paul Ricard can be set up to imitate almost any current circuit. No doubt Alianora has a spreadsheet that will work out the set up. If her spreadsheet can work out Kovalainen/Webber as 1 and 2 today a set up should be simple.

A track that is actually being used as an F1 race or test track would be helpful as there would be something called data in which to set the car up at a basic level. True but why bother going to the additional expense of transporting your cars to all of the test sites. Pick a track that’s going to be the main test track and build the factory there.

    - The Force Indias, Bourdais, Button and Piquet Jr are the most likely to be knocked out of Q1, with Nelson being the most likely of the five to escape

    - Heidfeld and Nakajima will get through to Q2, but be knocked out in it

    - Trulli, Kubica and Barrichello may get to Q3, but are more likely to be knocked out in Q2

    - Glock’s position in Q3 is somewhat marginal, but he is more likely to be in than out

    Kovalainen – Webber
    Hamilton – Coulthard

There is only one slight technical problem with that plan. The rules say you need to have two litres of fuel left in the tank for fuel samples. If I run out we get DQ’d.

Now, YOU can get us into trouble if you weave all over the place to swash the last drops of fuel into the pipe…. Rememeber that 2 Litres of fuel is there for just Ballast, and keeping us within the “letter” and not the “spirit” of the regs….

“I think Heikki has been progressively getting better through the season,” Dennis said. “When we first met in December, we realised his potential and he realised he was joining a team with a different approach. Following his fitness evaluation, we knew that he needed to address his training in a different way and it would take time. We predicted it would take until halfway the season, but he’s had some great races already. The only race he’d like to put behind him is Canada, apart from that all his races have been very good.”

And on the subject of LH: “I wouldn’t be too judgemental.”

Since you’re younger, your bones should heal faster after the test run I have planned at Nurburgring-Nordschleife. I hope you have a good memeory….

And take it easy at Dottinger Hole. I know it is a three mile straight, but watch the rev-limiter, you still might over-rev as you go over the crest of the three rolling hills.

    Seems Fair.

How come the no.2 driver can now play driving games on the net when he dodged the others we tried. Get yourself in the reasonably priced car and beat my time and you can be number 1.

You can’t pick a number one driver on predictions. That’s like picking a team manager based on the colour of her eyes.

About ten years ago I decided I was going to plan out a rival to F1. Drivers, circuits, sponsors everything. I thought sponsors would be the hardest but there are a stack of companies who on paper are an ideal fit for F1 but have never really bought into it. I assumed at the time that tobacco sponsorship kept them out.

Top of my list were Coke and Pepsi who have the biggest advertising budgets on the planet and are targetting a young audience. Airlines are another great example. They all spend a fortune advertising to try and promote an international jet set image which is perfect for F1.

I think we should add Coca Cola and Air France to our sponsors.

It takes a little while to get used to it but then it actually becomes realistic.

I have tried to log on to the game you mentioned earlier but it keeps telling me that there is no such user. Do you have to wait for them to activate it?

The thing about Coca Cola is they don’t mess about. If we get them in they will put some serious effort in. I can’t imagine how much Coke and diet Coke I have drunk over the years.

they’re all part of the coca-cola company, so all we do is give them a list of which products we’d like to use at which races, and sort it all out pre-season.

besides, that’s dan brunell’s job, seeing as he’s doing marketing. I guess the head of design would have to do so as well, since he decides what the car looks like.

Different brands for each race is very expensive. I am sure Christine wants to make a profit from this team. It also make establishing an image difficult.

Great now report back where you are max’ ing out the rev limiter on the straight and we will lengthen top gear and sixth if need be.

Well, it looks like I found the test track. If we can build the factory here, we can set up The Big Wigs offices up in “Castle Dismal” at the top of the hill there. Yes, “me” you guys get to run everything from a real life castle that just came out of a “Frankenstein” movie.

This is what I have lined up for sponsors…

    Prime:

    - Coca Cola Company marketing “Coke Zero” to fit the black livery nicely.

    OR

    - Apple Computer: Right demographic, right market aims, right income bracket… how the heck are they not in F1? They needs better international marketing especially with devices like the iPhone, iPod, iMac, and well iEverything else. Plus a great technology partner.

    Secondary:

    - British Petroleum: I don’t think a team has them as a sponsor… if not Exxon-Mobile or maybe Gulf…

    - Johnny Walker: I don’t think they have the money to be a prime, but would do well as a top secondary partner.

    - ((Need two or three more secondary… will think about as I take my 2 hour nap before the race…))

    Technology Partners:

    - Ford: Cosworth and all of their activities. Funny thing is, I have actually meet and interviewed Allen Mullay a couple of times when he was with Boeing in Seattle; bright and a very nice guy. I am kicking myself I never got to ask him about his feelings on Formula One.

For Ford, this would be a great way to get into Formula One without further hindering the company financially.

    - Boeing: Aero set up and use of windtunnels near Seattle; plus work on Carbon fiber production technology. Play off the Force India agreement with AIRBUS to get them to bite in.

    - Lotus Engineering: Knowing full well that my dream of seeing Lotus coming back into F1 will never come true, they would be a very handy technology partner. They might bit at something like that.

    Any ideas are welcomed…

7up have been in F1 before. Eddie Jordan brought them in when he entered F1. The green colour scheme was one of the best in the modern F1 era (and the Jordan 191 was one of the prettiest cars ever) But the deal only lasted a year. Perhaps they were annoyed that one of the drivers ended up in Jail (the Belgian one – I cannot spell his name) for assaulting a taxi driver in London. Incidentally that was the incident that allowed Michael Schumacher to make his F1 debut.

You may have a problem with Johnny Walker even if their Black Label is a perfect fit. They are already with McLaren so we would need to nick them from a team that is at the front of the grid.

Apple was another company that was high up on my list. Apple, Microsoft, Intel and AMD were all on the list and three of them now have a toe in the water.

I am not driving anything with an Alfa engine unless it is simply a re-badged Ferrari. Alfa’s own engines were always over-weight, under-powered and thirsty although to be absolutely fair they always sounded great. Shame we can’t have a V12.

One other job we need to assign. We need someone to make sure the car is legal just like Nigel Stepney used to do at Ferrari. I guess that will have to be added to Alianora’s job list as no-one knows the rules like Ali. Also I am sure she is not going to disappear off to McLaren with a dossier. :)
