Live Commenting: Britain - Qualifying
With a wet start to FP3 and a dry end we were treated to some great insight as to how the cars may fare in Qualifying this afternoon. It’s all weather dependant of course - at the moment it’s cold and windy but hopefully will be a dry start to Q1.
Alonso finished at the top of the sheets, and with the Renault looking particularly good in the changing conditions, he’ll be hoping for more of the same this afternoon.
As for the rest we’re probably not in the best position to be passing comment, but with Kimi in 9th and Kubica in 19th, we’re as confused as anyone else as to who’ll have the upper hand this afternoon.
Qualifying starts at 1pm in the UK. Lord knows where we’ll be watching, but we’re going to miss all of ITV’s build up, available online. Don’t forget Bernie’s token fan guesture on F1.com too. Radio 5Live will also have commentary from 1pm with Davidson in the box.
As always, we’re keen to know where you’re watching and all your qually predictions.

autosport.com has showers over at the circuit. how’s it looking over there, guys?
maybe we might see some typical british summer weather and have our first wet qualifying of the season.

By the way, I’ve updated my practise-qualifying-race comparitor to take the practise sessions into account.
I’m off to warm up the TV (looks like Dad’s missing sailing today to watch qualifying, since there’s no wind and scattered rain over here).

Good Afternoon everyone, and if the weather was the same in Silverstone as in the North East, it will be one wet track.
I currently have Kimi Raikkonen as my pick for pole, with Kovalainen, Hamilton then Massa.

Please remember Scott that this is not YouTube, no prize for being first here.
So does Autosport say anything about the wind? I’m in Northampton area, about 20 miles north/east of the track, and we haven’t had any rain since early today but the wind is really starting to pick up here, and seems to be heading in the direction of Silverstone?

Brands Hatch signed a contract a few years ago and found out after they had signed that there was not a hope of upgrading Brands. They did a deal where they kept the rights and Silverstone held the race. Then they discovered that they couldn’t make any money doing that so they bailed out of the deal.
Upgrading Donington is a massive job. They need to build a whole new loop into the circuit and the facilities are non-existant. I expect that the 2010 race will be at Silverstone.

Hey everyone, do we think Ferrari are the only likely polesitters or does Lewis stand a good chance?
July 5th, 2008 at 12:25 pmScott Woodwiss said:
as itv pointed out, lewis did something he didn’t do this time last year - tested at silverstone. i think this will help him out this weekend, and could probably be the reason why he didn’t succeed last year.

I agree with Christine - Macca are going to pull all stops to get Lewis on pole - will use an aggressive strategy. It would boost his confidence, even if it might slightly compromise the race strategy - but with uncertain weather - what is the best race strategy?

I think Lewis will get pole and I expect Heikki to be close. I wouldn’t be surprised if the top 4 are within 3 or 4 tenths.
July 5th, 2008 at 12:30 pmSteveintheUK said:
I think Silverstone should just let Donington get on with it, and if Donington can’t delivery then they could get the race back from them a lot cheaper. Silverstone need to stop playing Bernie’s little games. In the Batch Hatch mess both tracks lost money and Bernie was the only one laughing all the way to the bank.
Bernie HAS to have a British GP as a lot of the teams are based here and without a GP here would there still what to be part of F1 and then where would that leave little Bernie and his evil side kick?
July 5th, 2008 at 12:30 pmGaulty said:
Personally, I would have preferred Croft
but Donnington isn’t that great a track. Its on the short side, like Davidson said of 5Live, about 1m-1m10 the time will be. Tilke is presumably going to end up completly wrecking the track.

I don’t see what difference it makes to the teams if there is a GP in Britain or not. Would they still want to be in F1? Of course they would. That is their business and unless they have a fully structured alternative chmpionship to slide into every one of them would go bust inside a year if they pulled out of F1.

I think Ferrari are going to be very competitive today - still will be the fastest cars - but I think Lewis will pull something special for Macca with a pole and at least podium position. I do not expect BMW Sauber to do much - in all probability they are working on their 2009 car, they are unlikely to lose their third position in the constructor’s championship. I feel sorry for Robert though, but the team has to be realistic and focus on attainable goals and a championship this year is not one of them.

Afternoon all,
I’m with Steven on this. What they have to do to Donington is, in effect, to level it and start again. It’s not long enough, it’s not wide enough, and there are massive earthworks to be done (eg getting rid of the hill and that vestigial bridge near the Old Hairpin). The garage facilities are nowhere near good enough. And that’s before we get into the question of access/parking, which is poor if you’re going to a club or national-level event, let alone a world-class one.

But it’s the Hill at Donington that make Donington, Donington, with no hill it’s just another boring flat track. They are going to add a infield loop to increase the track length, it’s going to come of the back straight, go down the hill into the woods, near where the Rally track goes, and then back up the hill to rejoin the main track. Or so they said on Radio5Live during FP3
