F1 Digest - Britain Qualifying

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

A wet final Free Practice session turned into a damp qualifying, with some new faces ending up at the front of the grid.

Free Practice 3

Some very unusual timings Alonso and Webber towards the sharp end, and some of the usual suspects struggling more than you’d expect.

Qualifying

The rain held off for the majority of the session but appeared just in time to ruin Honda’s day. Webber was so close to making the front, but Kovalainen really wanted his maiden pole position.

Conclusions

Williams are less optimistic than they were yesterday, whilst BMW are hoping they’re on the way up. Ferrari are not at all happy with how the day went, whilst McLaren are reasonably satisfied. Listen to today’s show to find out how the other teams feel after the days events.

i think christine commented somewhere that it was basically too cold to record, because the wind blustering, the rain hammering down and we just had to keep moving.

nothing like england in the height of summer eh?

There’s one more to come, Lou.

It’s relatively easy to write a show in the middle of a field, but recording with chattering teeth is one step too far :)

that looks rather sharp, in more ways than one. You could cut your hand off on that thing!

what’s the bet that by the end of the season, every team will at least have tried an anvil wing? If I’m right in saying, only Honda, Ferrari and Toyota haven’t sampled any kind of engine cover attachment.

this makes for an interesting read at the bottom of that article :

“Hamilton led the way in the morning session at Hockenheim, setting a best lap of 1:15.550 - half a second clear of Nico Rosberg in the Williams. Adrian Sutil was third fastest, ahead of Nick Heidfeld in the BMW Sauber and Nelson Piquet in the Renault. “

Fantastic! It looks even more weird than all the previous efforts! I want a whole grid of cars with anvil wings, maybe they could come up with something for the drivers’ helmets? A couple of winglets or horns to make them look like vikings? That would be so Salvador Dali!

Now that is clever. It will create a vortex at the top point and one under the main wing probably feeding under the beam wing. So the air coming off th engine cover won’t interfere with the main element of the rear wing. The air off the top point will get dragged into the rooster tail without going near the top surface of the wing which would reduce downforce.

I think I am starting to get to grips with aerodynamics.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out. I am planning on buying my first zoom lens for my Nikon DSLR camera and i can’t decide which would be better. One is made by Nikon and the other made by Sigma…. I don’t know as much about lenses as i could do and i just wanted someone’s opinion on which is better… perhaps someone has some experiences with either of the lenses? any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Sorry it’s not really on topic or anything.

the sigma looks similar to ours. if you can wait till saturday you can try it yourself.

it has a habit of going soft at full zoom though.

really? :) that would be cool. I’m in no rush just at a bit of a crossroads.

yeah I’ve heard that they can do that. Does it do the same with a tripod?

yup, it’s not a stability thing. i guess it’s cheaper glass or something.

yeah i think it must be, the same thing seems to happen with the nikon lens - well according to reviews it does.

Hey Lou, what lenses are you looking at?

I assume you are talking about the Sigma 70-300?
For the price, that Sigma is about as good as you will find in that zoom range. Better lenses are avaliable, but they cost extra.

Hey Mattw, i am looking at the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO Lens and the Nikon 70-300mm G Lens.

For the price, that Sigma is about as good as you will find in that zoom range.

thanks… it’s more the qualitiy i’m looking for. I like both lenses (and they are around the budget i have been given) but i was wondering if one was better than the other…

I am a Canon user, so I don’t know Nikon lenses that well. I have tried a couple of camerta vendors, but I cannot see a ‘70-300 G’ lens listed - is this an old lens?

You can find a review of the Sigma here:

Thank you Mattw. That was very helpful. One of dad’s friends owns a camera shop and very kindly let me go there this afternoon to try the two lenses for myself. I much prefer the sigma :) Thank you for your help Mattw and ‘me’ :)
