This past weekend we went to the British GP for all three days and had an amazing time. It was action packed both on and off the track and this bumper show is packed full of our experiences there.
Intro
The show is late because the British GP was brilliant and exhausting.
Good Week / Bad Week
Good week for Teams and Coulthard (although McLaren may not see it that way), and a bad week for Dutch courts and the independents.
News and Views
We talk about David Coulthard’s decision to quit, who will replace him and what he will do now. Discussions take place regarding the Silverstone vs. Donington debate, and that’s not the last you’ll hear of it this show.
British GP
All about our weekend away, including not wanting the programme, a beautiful moment at Copse, the Batman livery, and the Pub Quiz. We also discuss the merits of Murray Walker and Anthony Davidson, name drop as much as we can, and discuss life in a tent. Oh yea, and we talk about the race as well.
Feedback
Just one email from Keith telling us that he’s looked at Go Motorsport and will be marshalling very soon.

Massive, massive podcast. Are you thinking of breaking into the 2-hour territory?
I hope my frequent commenting doesn’t come as a cultural shock, decided to leave RF1 blog for a while (until they change their drivers and respective fans), it was turning into Alonso fansite. Nasty.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:14 pmRich said:
Do you not think it is several drivers? Button stated his style was not that of an F1 driver, while at Silverstone Alonso stated he was an ex F1 driver.
Logically it has to be several drivers you do not just get into an F1 type car like the Santander two-seater and lap in the rain as quickly as this. So for last weekend it was probably either a Macca test driver or Damon Hill who is at least sometimes the Stig.

Mammoth Podcast!
RE Life behind Lewis lap footage: I saw the repeat of the program a few weeks ago and i’m sure Ant’s lap was still in there.
RE Jenson Button: You made some good points with regards to Button’s recent performance, but in his defence, his teammate worked with Ross for five years and i’m not at all surprised he is being out-performed at the moment. He’s the fourth highest payed driver by Honda after Kimi, Fernando and Lewis. He won’t be going anywhere against his own choice.
RE Anthony Davidson: He was great during 5live’s coverage last weekend. Real shame that he probably won’t make it back to F1. I would still be surprised if he gave up his racing ambitions and joined the BBC full time though.
MUST make it to Silverstone next year, no matter what. Hope you have a good and less tiresome time at goodwood. Weather is holding up, at least.

I think its harsh to call hamilton the best wet weather driver of the race. He did go off when it started to rain properly, which alonso and heidfeld didn’t when they were on the same tyres. I think it came down to hamilton being in a mclaren and the strategy also, we should give more credit to mclaren than hamilton.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:42 pmChristine said:
It seems like Renault left the tyre choice to Alonso, whereas McLaren made the decision for their driver. The results are there for all to see, but it’s up to the driver to make it work, which Hamilton did.

Rain is an equaliser, sure Mclaren may have been the best car for Silverstone and the team had a good strategy - but Lewis was spectacular and in my humble opinion his drive at the British GP has put into my top category of current drivers. He was a lot faster than his team mate, he won my a large margin and these aspects count for a lot.

@ME - I was interested in your comments about Jenson. I think his reputation of being good in the wet was based on his sole GP victory which was a wet race. I am fearful about his future though. Since I only have video material to go on I may be wrong - but as a driver he seems rather smooth (like Nick). Obviously because of traction control being lifted the tyres are rather different - it seems to have effected some drivers more. It is just an idea that his woes maybe somewhat similar to Nick’s. The more aggressive drivers and those heavier on tyres appear to have the upper hand this season.
I feel sorry for Felipe - really not sure what his problems were but barrages of criticism have been launched. Also poor DC, but somehow he seems to make a lot of errors of judgement - trying too hard? While I also like Nico it is surprising that Kaz has caught him up in the points and am pleased you gave him a bit of a plug. Personally I do not think he is doing a bad job - the Williams car is not the greatest. Again a rather dismal race for Bourdais - he seemed almost better in last year’s car!

maybe, but again, there was talk before tc was banned that the lack of it would suit the man’s style.
he might turn it around next race and put any fears to rest (as nick did with his qualifying last weekend), but the interview on 5live was quite telling.
i think le bol deserves credit for spotting that. at least i think it was him who brought it to our attention earlier this week.
on track kaz looks ragged by comparison, but results are results.
i’m sure he preferred the old one actually. for whatever reason, he hasn’t unlocked the secret of the new equipment. i guess it’s too far removed from his champ car machinery.

I would have thought similarly - but somehow this seems not to have been the case. Even I can see that Kaz looks ragged, bit like Sato in his early days. To be honest Kubica does not look the smoothest either.
I wonder if this year’s cars are really different - so I wonder what next year’s cars will be like and who will benefit the most! The younger drivers seem to have adapted rather faster to driving the TC free cars.

Just finished listening to my first ever podcast. Before I started listening to it I noted that it was an hour and twenty minutes long and thought I’d never get through it. Quite to the contrary, it was very entertaining - well done for holding my attention for so long!
I must also say that my first F1 experiences couldn’t have been better. Dan won tickets to testing and the Grand Prix. We got to hang out in the Renault garage during testing. We sat in a “covered” grandstand just before Copse during the race weekend - although because we were in the front row we still got drenched! The race was one of the most exciting I’ve ever seen. And we got interviewed by Christine and the mysterious “me”!
Why’d you go and say that? He’s going to be unbearable now!!

quick bit of ted news i missed from earlier this week, this time on the future of donington:
“When we do the British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park, the radar from East Midlands Airport plays havoc with our radio cameras and radio microphone frequencies. And we’re the only broadcasters at the track.”
“Then there’s telemetry. The touring car teams don’t use telemetry and microwave links like the F1 teams do.”
“Some of Ferrari and McLaren’s encrypted radio channels are very close to air traffic control frequencies.”
“And last but not least, I don’t think half the teams would be allowed to erect their radio masts or their triple storey motorhomes in the paddock because they would reach to within 300 feet of the aircraft landing on runway 09.”
ted goes on (and on), but trust me the whole article is worth a read:

ok thoughts on the podcast
You didn’t get any photos of Jenson
perhaps you could get some today to make up for it
The Honda earthdreams experience bubble thing sounds pretty good
Lol you were a little harsh on Jenson about the ‘question of motorsport’ thing. It’s only a quiz after all
On the subject of Jenson driving in the wet. I know there is only so much you can put down to bad luck. But the little time he has had in the recent wet races have shown that he is good in the wet. In Germany he went from far back in the field to 4th in 2 or 3 laps before aquaplaning off at the first corner at about the same time as 4 others. Also to be fair, in Monaco he hit Heidfeld but after that he recovered and was doing well until Heikki hit him. Not exactly his fault…. I’m just standing up for the guy now
Personally I think he is OK in the wet, I’m not sure he is amazing in the wet, he still needs to prove that.
I’m not sure why they had all of the drivers on the back of a truck again, at other races this year they have been in separate cars….
Sounds like you had a really good time
Brilliant podcast, one of the best yet!
You did a great job describing your experiences
Well worth the wait

I have just departed the FOS and am in the car park and found out why I didn’t spot Christine. Hope you feel better soon.
Button did a spectacular wheelspin start and broke first gear, then second, then third. He crawled up the hill in fourth and they put the car on a truck. He said they would fix it for the afternoon but they didn’t bother taking it back down the hill until well after lunch.
Why is it Ferrari only employs poseurs as mechanics. First thing this morning they had a huge crowd as did McLaren but fortunately Honda between them had no-one. The poseurs were playing up to the crowd when Red Bull started warming up their engine and the Ferrari fans in unison turned and walked away. The poseurs were crestfallen.

I first realized it while reading the race report on grandprix.com.
“In the end Jarno managed to scramble to seventh on the last lap, leaving Nakajima with just one point. This may not seem much but this was a significant event for it was the first time that Kazuki completely dominated Nico Rosberg.”
“Dominated” may be a strong word but I’d agree with FW - Nakajima is F1 material. He seems to be a Japanese version of Wurz.

Have to take issue on the Silverstone facilities though. Tickets are clearly advertised on all official sites as to whether you have a number seat and whether they are covered or not - so don’t think people can complain when they get there - although I take the point that the main pit straight grand stand should be covered. In comparison to many circuits I’ve been to though, Silverstone has a lot more covered seating (e.g Becketts, Woodcote, Luffield).
Silverstone General Admittance has far more viewing areas (which are generally level-ish than many circuits, where fans are often limited to set areas (sometimes tie-ing themselves to stakes to prevent slipping doen a steep bank) and not permitted to walk the entire circuit.
Silverstone in the rain is also much more pleasurable than say Spa or Hungry (Only other wet races I’ve been to). Silverstone has concrete paths running the entire perimeter of the circuit, and a lot of the banking has gravel to stand on - whilst on other circuits, once you are out of the pit straight you are on mud tracks - even to get in and out of the stands.

i’ll have to defer to your more experienced judgement here, because silverstone is the only gp venue i’ve been too.
i just felt very sorry for anyone standing up to their ankles in mud, being blown all over the place and getting soaked at the same time.
it doesn’t seem good value for money when you’re paying £140 for the privilege.
on a slightly related point. a miffed caller spoke to murray walker during his 606 show on saturday, complaining that facilities and entertainment for kids were non-existent. that’s unforgivable when the organisers heavily promote “Family Tickets” the way that they do.
i know the root of all the problems is bernie and his extortionate fees, but my overall impression of the place is that just feels unloved.

Great podcast, guys!
Oh, “me”, you brought up Alonso staying on the inters. Many said that he kinda went that way after being faced with a similar situation in China 2006 and went for new tyres because he thought the drizzle would keep up. But the weather forecast was wrong, the track dried, and he couldn’t keep Schumi behind him (who went to take that last win of his).
This year, though, the forecasts WERE right, so Alonso was kinda… double-crossed? Heh.
July 14th, 2008 at 2:10 pmIan Lockwood said:
Not sure what that caller was expecting / where on the circuit he went??
There are baby changing facilities (not sure why you’d take a baby to a GP though). There was that big wheel by Copse, down at Stowe there was an inflatable Laser Quest thingy and a giant scalextric, the e-zones had regular competitions on stage in between races - a number of which were specifically for kids. The Parachute, helicopter, & Red Arrows displays would presumuably appeal to kids too.
July 14th, 2008 at 2:29 pmme said:
he was talking about the e-zone. apparently bungie-jumps aren’t great for kids and aside from a big wheel, he said there wasn’t much for them to do.
can’t say i was paying much attention to the attractions, nor am i in anyway qualified to comment, but i would say if you specifically sell a family ticket that says “for 2-3 children”, it seems only reasonable to try and cater for them.
of the things you’ve mentioned i guess most of them are fair weather entertainment. the arrows did their best but were constrained by the cloud and the grass surrounding the stage was sodden from sunday morning until about 6pm.
someone did respond on the show though, and suggested the guy try alton towers instead
July 14th, 2008 at 2:33 pmIan Lockwood said:
Lol - I guess the point to remember is that the main point of going is to see cars on a racetrack.

Just as well it did or I would have missed it too. It was however full of very happy kids. I don’t remember school trips to anything half as exciting. It is very weird though watching teams of eight year old girls having tyre changing races.
I can only hope that the other F1 teams mercilessly rip off this concept and do the same thing. I guess the only difficulty would be if Honda did one. It would be ugly to look at and nothing would work for more than 30 seconds.
One of the first things I saw when I walked into Goodwood yesterday was someone walking around in an earthdreams tracksuit. White top and those trousers. I was stunned that anyone would pay money for it. Then I saw that the Honda mechanics were wearing tracksuits so no doubt the person I saw was a mechanic on his way in.

pretty sure that toyota did this first, many years ago. and since then both bmw and mclaren have blatantly ripped it off.
toyota were still doing it at their fos stand at the weekend in fact.

we first saw toyota do it at autosport international (in 05 maybe?). since then we’ve seen bmw do it and also mclaren were showing off an identical concept at silverstone.
i wasn’t talking about the pit-lane park in general, that’s unique and if anyone ripped that idea off, i’d be pretty annoyed personally.

BMW let you do re-fueling. They have 20 odd computers set up to try your hand at aero-design. They have plasma screens showing CFD data. I was facinated by one that was showing air flow in the engine inlet. They call it the airhorn but basically everything from the hole above the drivers head to the inlets. They had it showing different colours for different speeds and every time a valve opens the air speeds up and then you get this weird effect where an area of high air speed ascends all the way up to the hole above the drivers head.
They also had three simulators set up so you could race your mates. They had a hole load of weird driver exercise stuff. They had two driver seats you could strap yourself into and experience the forces Heidfeld had going round the proper Nurburgring and a video screen in front of you showing the lap. They also had a steering whell but that was really just something to hang on to.
They had so much stuff it was unbelievable and nothing apart from the cars that were running was off limits. They had an exploded car like you normally see exploded diagrams except it was the full car.
I saw a little of the rally stage and those guys were not hanging around. Even the old guys were going for it. A few years ago they started with a small stage then Hannu Mikkola designed the current one which is a mile and a half but there was some talk on Sunday that they will extend it again so soon you will not be able to miss it.
I saw the Honda lawnmower painted in full earthdreams livery. Who is going to buy that?

Oh and one other thing BMW had was this odd cut out thing that let you experience the seating position in an F1 car without having to climb into a cockpit. It felt very odd having your feet high than you backside. I am sure part of that was due to the thing being suitable for all sizes so it was probably a bit more laid back than reality but high noses make for very uncomfortable seating positions even for a few seconds.

I would like to comment on Earth Dream tents anyone who has done any tenting would know those bread-tin tents would not work either in a “British” or “South African” summer . I have spent a lot of time in tents with summer temps above +45 C and winter temps below -10 C —- you need two layers whether it is hot or cold and a double entrance at one end only! No wonder poor Christine got sick!

It is certainly very close. Room service to your tent and you think you are roughing it?

a good point. in that case they shouldn’t design a UI that mimics the iPhone. possibly the may have designed their’s first, but still i had the desire to touch the screen too often and to my immense frustration it did bugger all.
additionally the quality of the screen is still poor, and like i said, the “facts” were wrong. so i’m not as enamoured by the product as most people, but i appear to be in the minority on this one.

This is the best show you’ve done so far, in my opinion. The longer format worked very well, as it allowed for wide ranging analysis and greater depth.
With regards to the more general debate about duration, I think it partly comes down to the quality of the podcast in the first place. If a show is full of quality material throughout (as is the case with Sidepodcast), then a longer format can go down very well indeed.

In general it is not a big issue at club raing because the engines are not tuned to anything like the same level and don’t come close to making as much noise. In the 80s there used to be all sorts of cars racing at very low profile meetings at places like Ingliston which were fitted with Cosworth DFVs because there were just so many of them around. Now GP engines don’t have any life beyond F1 and grid sizes are dropping and so costs have to be reduced. One of the results of that is that engines are smaller and less powerful. The one exception to this is the various classes which run high revving motorbike engines.
It is certainly worth raising the issue with go motorsport or anyone else for that matter. We don’t have the clout to make anything happen so the more people stirring things up the more chance we have of sense prevailing.
It certainly has to be worth contacting the BRDC and the MSA. It may even be worth sending something to the FIA.

You walk in past the Cartier Style et Luxe which contains some of the most unique cars in the world. In the distance you can hear the occasional F1 engine firing up. You walk past what looks like a normal outdoor cafe but a quick scan of the price list shows Veuve Cliquot champagne at £180 a bottle and then the public address system announces that at 11:00 am they will be firing up two dozen alcohol fueled dragsters on the cricket pitch.
That is only the first ten minutes. You really shouldn’t miss it if you ever get the chance to go.

Having some sort of ear protection awareness campaign would be a good idea and I’ll throw it into the pot. Too many people think that you’re somehow wimping out if you use them – including people who ought to know better (as ‘Me’ pointed out, some photographers at the pre-Silverstone test weren’t wearing them).

And yet another quote from the quote that was translated this way.
Willi Weber told Sport Bild: “Rosberg will replace Heikki Kovalainen, who will change back to Renault.” (source: F1-Live, who else could publish it?)
Mein Gott! Ist das absolut schade?
Last year I jokingly wrote “kovalainen to mclaren” and it came true, earlier this year I wrote “kovalainen back to renault” so it must come true.
And Alonso rumours are cool. Santander/Ferrari link or Repsol/Honda (supposedly, Repsol would drop MotoGP sponsorship). My bet is on Ferrari.

Just a quickie of a question, finally got round to joining Fantasy Racers, so how do I join Sidepodcast league thingy?

Ferrari will win in Hockenheim, it’s guaranteed. It’s just that this year the luck changes from race to race, 1st Lewis was sinking now he’s on top of the world; Ferrari were winning everything in France and now they are being massively criticized. BMW were going to beat Ferrari and McLaren after Canada and now they have rather modest ambitions for the rest of the season.
Montezemolo smells that Alonso is interested in emulating Schu and Alonso smells that Ferrari is the place to be if you want to enjoy Nº1 status and have special treatment from the FIA. I know it sounds dull (the FIA remark) but that seems to be the case. Besides, Saint Luca can afford to pay Alonso’s salary and will gladly do so, while other teams will not be happy about it. Not sure about Toyota or Honda.

weekend weather is said to be some light rain and maybe showers. sounds like macca territory to me.
with max insisting on drastic financial cutbacks, teams may find themselves with more spare change than they had previous accounted for.

Could be. But still I’m betting on Ferrari. Making the same mistake twice - that’s unlikely.
It’s possible too, we won’t know for sure until Monza. I’m talking hypothetically. I’d be pleased to see Alonso move to Ferrari. That would create more interest, maybe direct fight with Hamilton on track? Why not?
Anyway, the championship this year is quite amusing, reminds me of 2003.

couldn’t agree more. but brawn wouldn’t have made those mistakes and todt wouldn’t have tolerated them. will they even be competitive next year?

How much are they paying Schumi to develop their cars? I think they’ll put him in 2009 car ASAP to test it and get his feedback. I think after more than 50 years of racing in F1 Ferrari have enormous potential and knowledge/know-how to succeed in 2009. Although a repeat of 2005 is possible.
Nurburgring 1999 - lost wheel and lost championship, those two were in charge. I think Salo had some kind of technical issue (brakes?) but Edmund finished 7th on that occasion (and just out of the points because in those days 6th was the last points-scoring position but you all know that and it’s a bit silly to mention it). Total Ferrari defeat. But I mostly remember that race for Badoer’s Minardi breaking down while running in 4th and him crying worse than Hakkinen in Monza that same year.

Alonso going to Ferrari brings to my mind Prost going to Maranello in the late of 1990. We have the same novel under the F1 news, and the same expectation. I hope he achieve a better results than Alain.
Coincidently, his Nemesis is in Mclaren too…
“..Making the same mistake twice - that’s unlikely…”
IMHO, Monaco and Silverstone was the same kind of mistakes! An incapability to deal with the unpredictability of the weather conditions…
Something that I´m aware about Mclaren is their top speeds on straight line, something that could be very worth at Hockenheim. The silver guys has bit the Ferraris in Canada in this area and in Hockenheim, even in the dry, McLaren could be very competitive.
But If it rains there… ciao!

That summarizes my view completely about Renault and Kovi. Mercedes have been bleating about having a german driver so we have Nico (fast but poor at scoring points), Nick (was previously passed over), DeSeb (also fast but poor at finishing a race), Timo (not done enough to impress Macca) and Adrian Sutil (Hamilton’s mate). Although I would choose Nick from that bunch my guess would be Macca would again go for Nico. Personally I think Mercedes should look to employing the services of a neighbouring Pole that might just be the fastest guy on the racetrack. Nick and Nico at BMW would make a good pair.
I think Kovy could well end up back at Renault, especially if Alonso ditches the team.
Alonso at Ferrari would certainly challenge Lewis. Massa after a run of impressive results really damaged his credibility at wet Silverstone!

Hockenheim is going to be a show down between Macca and Ferrari - My guess for the grid is Kimi, Lewis and then Felipe - sadly Kovy will be lurking around sixth place. Robert will be fourth and Alonso fifth. The driver most likely to gate crash this order will be Mark !

I remember Aussie driver Mark Webber (seen looking visibly grumpy today) was labelled as archetype Williams driver and compared to Alan Jones before moving to Frank’s team in 2005, but the result was pretty sad. Mark in the end said something like “I’ll trust my manager from now on, he advised me against moving to Williams and he was right” (Mark also mentioned something about the freedom to express his thoughts he was denied while driving for Frank) so Mark was unable to leave his mark on Williams history or mark as many points as he would’ve liked. But his exit from Monaco 2006 GP was very stylish, the way he threw that steering wheel. A classic. And his engineer was screaming on the team radio: “Fisichella! Get him out of the way!” and Mark also screamed something and then his Cosworth engine (I think so) decided to call it a day.
Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is - you never know how things will turn out.
Yeah, if I were in charge of grandprix.com I’d dub the race report “Lewis’ wet dream” or “Rider on the Storm”. And for Massa’s day I’d choose Kylie’s “Spinning around” title.

Norbert “the Viking” Haug surely wants a German driver so Nico would fit. But then again the question of being Nº2 to LH with Rosberg’s ambitions? I would promote Bruno Spengler from DTM, since Paffet (two British drivers? no way! marketing disaster!) is likely to emulate Davidson’s path. Spengler races under Canadian colours but speaks German.
Check this out: I have this game on my mobile called “vodafone mclaren racing” from 2007, it features LH and ALO as team drivers and 3 tracks - Spain, Germany and UK. How politically correct! Spain for ALO fans, Germany for Mercedes and UK for LH and McLaren. I seem to notice that when I choose Hamilton option I always win the game easily while with Alonso option I have to try harder, coincidence? Only joking. Must be my imagination.
Gute nacht.

Very funny…
Perhaps the little guy inside your phone who win easily could be using another guy´s data. Why he doesn´t win with his own data could remain a big mystery…
Anyway you can choose another mobile operator to relief of the guy who lose, maybe TIM…

I am sure it is coincidence but it makes for a very funny story. The PC was on the unsubtle side!
Rosberg’s old man was not keen on the last Macca offer! Second fiddle to Lewis would be hard to swallow and this is the only aspect that gives Kovy some hope of retaining his seat. I am really not sure it is the right place for likable Finn though.
