Having been away from Sidepodcast Towers for too long, it’s time to sit back, relax and catch up with the news and events from the past few days. We also discuss our last summer outing at Goodwood.
Intro
If last week’s show was good because of him, perhaps it’s time to think about going solo?
Good Week / Bad Week
Perhaps not.
Good week for helmets and making friends, but a bad week for Ferrari and F1 in general.
News and Views
We discuss details from the three day test at Hockenheim including Renault’s continual engine failures, the comparison between McLaren and Ferrari, and whether the anvil wing/shark fin is going to take over the sport.
Goodwood FoS
With an introduction from Steven Roy, we discuss our weekend, with not as much enthusiasm as expected. Several things didn’t live up to expectations, whilst other things were better than we could have hoped. Plus, we got free smoothies, made up a ridiculous pun, and took photos of Vicki Butler-Henderson. No complaints from us… except the few in the show.
Feedback
No feedback because let’s be honest, it’s only been four days since the last show.

I think if you looked at your spreadsheet from the French and British Grand Prix you will see that there has been quite a bit of moment in the top 10 positions.
I did the math and was expecting to finish fifth. So Fourth was an unexpected surprize. And your scores of the top five teams were off by an average of 300 points per driver.
The top 5 teams are trying to win you a prize for best league here…..
BTW Why no comments from the Top Senior manager about the new F1 team?

Thanks for the heads-up. I’m not expecting much movement, but it will be interesting to see what movements people think will happen.
I’d been wondering for the past few days when the next issue of F1 Racing was going to turn up in the post, then I checked the preview section of last issue and realised it’s not due out for at least another week. Oops!
Incidentally, how did the priming go yesterday?

Erm… …”We decided to invent a new fantasy F1 team, simulating the preparations for a new F1 team?”
The pandas and TARDISes may take more explanation, though - and outsiders may find the idea that we think Timo Glock may have borrowed a TARDIS extremely bizarre…

I have just received a reply from Goodwood about my ear protection e-mail. It is not exactly the most positive reply in the world. Did anyone see where they were selling ear defenders because after I saw people standing next to F1 cars while the engines were being fired up early in the morning I was constantly looking at who was wearing ear protection and who wasn’t and I didn’t see anyone selling ear protection.

Not the most relevant one either. Considering that this was an ear protection awareness campaign, the presence or absence of on-site ear defender salespeople shouldn’t have affected whether they were willing to lend their voices to a campaign. For that matter, if they sell defenders on-site, then surely they’d make more money if they joined a campaign that would indirectly increase sales of them?

no. on the plus side at least you received a response, but it does sound like it’ll take “personal injury” followed by a lawsuit to make them pay attention. given today’s litigious society, i’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
we covered pretty much every inch of ground south of the wildcats. every stall, every manufacturer stand, but we didn’t see any.
mind you we didn’t see them for sale at silverstone either, so maybe we’re not the best ones to pass comment.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:14 pmme said:
agreed. although then we’d criticise them of profiteering
ear plugs should be given away freely at the gate. asking people to find a hidden sales stand isn’t a practical solution either.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:18 pmSteven Roy said:
The original message was not to get them to join a campaign Ali it was to get them to give out free ear protection to all and to display warning signs. I am surprised that they are not compelled to do that by law because in industry as soon as you hit 80dB an employer has to make ear protection available and at 83dB it is compulsory to use it. Those numbers may be out by a couple of dB because they reduced them recently. Standing next to one or more F1 engines is way over those numbers.
Still Rome wasn’t built in a day and as a wise man once said you have to eat an elephant a mouthful at a time.

Not too bad, ta. Lots of stuff still to do because it’s a ’70s townhouse that hasn’t really felt the lick of a paintbrish since it was built (by the looks of things). Cat management is the real problem as we go into the gloss stage. Jasmine already has an extra splodge of white on her tail.
They’re not expensive at all and wouldn’t make much of a dent in profits. I suppose the only thing that would be a problem is litter.
It would cost nothing at all to print a warning on the tickets, along with the regular “Motorsport can be dangerous” disclaimer.
Bahrain’s circuit may be derided in some quarters, but they give out ‘plugs for free.

OK, now the reply makes sense. Sorry for misunderstanding.
I am surprised that they are not compelled to do that by law {Steven Roy - 9 comments ago}
They probably are - but I imagine they get round it by putting a warning in tiny letters on the back of the ticket, or in the Terms and Conditions you have to agree to before getting the ticket. Since viewers are not employees of Goodwood, they’re not obliged to wear ear protection, but it would still be sensible for them to have provision.
and we thought silverstone had issues dealing with the weather: {me - 8 comments ago}
Is that really Hockenheim? Or is it some earlier race where there was a flood?
It should be landing on subscribers’ mats today or tomorrow, actually. {Stuart Codling - 6 comments ago}
Thank you for telling me. I’ve been looking forward to it for several days now
It could still turn up today, since the postman appears to be having a slow day and my house is the last one on his route (usually).
It sort of fell out during the redesign when we decided not to have a preview of next month’s contents. {Stuart Codling - 6 comments ago}
Quite understandable - one does tend to go with the other. I wonder how many people will be surprised to see who’s on the cover (assuming it is still Kubica)?
Cat management is the real problem as we go into the gloss stage. {Stuart Codling - 6 comments ago}
I can understand that - the cats at my house have an insatiable sense of curiosity
(though since I live on a farm, they are generally expected to stay outdoors…)
I suppose the only thing that would be a problem is litter. {Stuart Codling - 6 comments ago}
I can see the problem there - since earplugs go into the ear, it would be virtually impossible to recycle them because of the earwax and possibility of germs.
It would cost nothing at all to print a warning on the tickets, along with the regular “Motorsport can be dangerous” disclaimer. {Stuart Codling - 6 comments ago}
They probably do - the trick is getting them to print it in a font size people can actually read…
any idea what the deal with bmw is on this one? {me - 2 comments ago}
BMW made an agreement to release Vettel from his obligations to them last winter just before he was confirmed as a Toro Rosso driver. That factor is not an issue any more.

DC is not doing as great as Webber, but i shouldn’t have thought Red Bull would get rid of him when he has already announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Vettel is in an RB3 already anyway, so they will not gain much.
Vettel is still young and the Toro Rosso environment suits him well at the moment. The more time they can give him there before moving him the ‘pressure cooker’ environment of being Webber’s team mate the better.
And to be honest, Vettel has crashed just as much as Coulthard this year. I’m not Coulthard’s biggest fan, but I don’t see any sense in a mid season shuffle.

one possibility might be STR wanting to get another driver in asap?
dc’s podium was well deserved, but there are two new races coming up where he doesn’t know the tracks, and in all honesty now doesn’t need too. so move vettel up to the RBR, clearing a space for next years STR driver to show what he’s got.

Shame Donnelly had that accident. He was a real talent. I saw him at Autosport International and he still hobbles badly and looks like a chunk of his foot is missing.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:09 pmMattw said:
Could happen - if there was a big tallent waiting on the wings, like a new Hamilton or Vettel.
But is there anyone like that at the moment? Senna maybe, but I still think he needs more experience (in GP2) before stepping up.
How many free seats will there be next year? I’m not sure Toro Rosso needs to rush.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:21 pmme said:
but how important is that though? i don’t want to dismiss gp2, but if you were senna wouldn’t you rather be in an f1 car? it’s possible he could do with more experience (as mattw says) out of the limelight, but in that case, you’d give the guy a testing role next year anyways.
it’s not just the car vettel’s in, it’s also working with the team. presumably there will be a change when moving factories from italy to england.
i guess rbr will honour dc’s contract, but i think if it were me i’d be moving things around sooner rather than later.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:42 pmMattw said:

About DC, it would make more sense to leave DC in the seat for the rest of the year, might as well. Putting Vettel in the senior team mid-way through a season might be hard for the guy. DC might do what Wurz did in 07, and decide to leave one or two races before the end.
Something which I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere for a while, y’know with Prodrive not entering this year and maybe not next year, why not re-open the election for another team? It would be a great thing to do, especially with Super Aguri gone. I spose the idea of it seems a bit optimistic for fans of private teams, but surely even manufacturers would like to see more privateers too.
