Live Commenting: Germany - Free Practice 2

Formula One, free practice two. The second of two ninety minutes sessions gets going at exactly 2pm in Germany (or 1pm if you’re in the UK).

After a pretty damp start to this morning’s early session, we weren’t expecting a lot of track action, but the teams certainly delivered. With most drivers putting in more than 20 laps, it was non stop action all the way, especially when Kubica threw it into the barriers unprompted.

The McLaren’s looked strong, while Vettel appears to be in his element at his home track. BMW have work to do this afternoon though. Before his off, Robert had managed just 8 laps of running so they’re well and truly on the back foot at the moment. Ferrari managed to look convincing in the wet too, which is no mean feat given the results of their last outing in such conditions.

In terms of the weather, the rain looks like it might hold off for the remainder of this afternoon’s running. It should be dry tyres all round, and hopefully will give us a better indication of who made improvements during the last test and who fell behind.

It’ll be live timing plus a little bit of ITV video streaming for us this afternoon.

Please say “Hi” if you’re following the action, and let us know what you can see / hear during FP2.

Apart from Kubica, is anyone really that far out of position in the first practice session? Nakajima is in 9th, which is good for Williams/Toyota (Rosberg is 6th, but we kind of expect that from him. Webber in 14th is a little down on where I’d expect to see the Red Bulls - usually 8th-12th. What I saw of today was an interesting session, but I didn’t see any surprises? Thoughts?

Peter Windsor has offered some more interesting insight - this time relating to Hamilton’s visor problem at Silverstone. Apparently Arai introduced a double visor solution in 2006, which Hamilton used in Japan last year. He wasn’t happy with it, though, saying that water got between the two visors.

In response, Arai told him that he should bare in mind that the conditions were just about as bad as you can get, and that a single visor solution would be much worse. However, Hamilton decided to ignore their advice, and handed visor preparation over to his physical trainer, who gave him a single visor at Silverstone, which is why he suffered the misting.

I’d love to switch back to OS X away from Vista. I used to get up to six hours battery life out of my iBook, although that was probably due to it having a 12.1″ screen.

Owning a Macbook Air would be great, wouldn’t it? I’ve got my eye on the solid state option, although have no hope of affording it at the moment.

we carried a very heavy laptop around with for the past three weeks, so suddenly weight is at the forefront of our minds. i wasn’t bothered about it in the past, but right now “air” sounds appealing.

I have now submitted my provisional practise-qualifying-race comparitor for Friday. It’s got both a qualifying and a race predictor in it now, but the former was only 20% accurate last race and the latter is very much in prototype form at the moment. Note that the race comparitor assumes everyone finishes; if someone drops out, then in theory you should only need to renumber the list minus the retiree, but races are very complex beasts.

    Conclusions

    Qualifying

    - Bourdais and Sutil are almost certainly out in first qualifying
    - Trulli and Kubica are supposedly out in first qualifying, but I think that’s just a glitch in the spreadsheet
    - Assuming the above, the Hondas and Fisichella are in serious danger of not getting past Q1
    - Piquet Jr, Glock, Coulthard and Heidfeld are likely to get to Q2 but no further. However one of them may get through to Q3.

    Predicted 1-6:

    Hamilton-Massa
    Kovalainen-Alonso
Raikkonen-Vettel/Rosberg (the comparitor put them in joint 6th, which is impossible…)

    Race

    Predicted 1-10:

    Massa-Hamilton
    Raikkonen-Kovalainen
    Alonso-Vettel
    Rosberg-Webber
    Piquet Jr-Coulthard

I don’t care if he races or not so long as no-one sticks a microphone in his face so that we have to listen to him whine again. At least this time he can’t moan about his team mates. Although from what I have seen of his sons’ careers they are pretty useless so at least the prospect of them winning is not something I need to contemplate. They seem to be the worst second generation drivers ever. Every other successful F1 driver’s kids seem to be reasonably competitive in the junior categories.

Raikkonen behind Alonso in qualifying and Massa ahead of Hamilton in the race. Those are not my predictions but given your spreadsheet’s success at Silverstone I am reluctant to argue. I guess it is difficult for the comparitor to factor in BMW’s Friday sandbagging but maybe after FP3 it will. It managed at Silverstone so it may do it again. Interesting info nonetheless.

    Diz iz interesting: http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns20601.html

“Yesterday Windshear Inc held “a grand opening” for the world’s first commercially available full-scale, single-belt, rolling road wind tunnel. This is located in Concord, North Carolina, in the heart of NASCAR country. The facilty, which can simulate conditions of cars running at 180mph, is owned by California-based Haas Automation, one of the world’s biggest machine tool companies.

The word on the grapevine is that McLaren and Renault have already booked time in the facility and we have even heard that Renault has had a car in the tunnel.”

Even more interesting is diz: “The word in Italy is that Ferrari has plans for a new facility along similar lines.”

I can connect my camera and use a couple of programs but that’s it.

    he responded

Now we know it’s not a lady.

Anyway, I’ve been bombing you with quotes and I’ll continue because this one is funny.

    Q. (Kevin Garside – The Daily Telegraph) Stefano, let me take you back to the English newspaper, if I may. It was The Times and they were presenting a trivial football news kind of story. They suggested you were swooping at the McLaren Mercedes event last night, tempting Lewis’s father with an offer to bring young Lewis to Ferrari. If that wasn’t what you were talking about, perhaps you could tell us what you were speaking to Lewis’s father about?

Domenicalli: That’s fantastic anyway. It’s good news! I was walking away from Norbert’s party because I had other things to do with our sponsor. Anthony just came up behind me and just said hallo and that’s it, very easy. It’s nice to see how these things can grow. Everyone has seen it, I think. Easy.

Haug: I think that’s a great place to start negotiations with our driver: behind the Mercedes grandstand. Of course Stefano would do that! Why would he not meet in a hotel room or wherever? And he’s a gentleman, by the way. He’s not coming to our function and then talking to our driver. But I think it’s great that there is some communication going on next to the race track, and I think that was it.

They confessed that not all photos were taken by them, they sometimes use other people’s pictures.

I can imagine Ron Dennis and Domenicalli are “fighting” in the ring when Lewis Hamilton sneaks behind Dennis with a folding chair, hits him over the back, and knocks him out. Then Lewis rips off his McLaren hooded sweater to reveal a Ferrari jersey underneath it.

Livio Oricchio, Brazilian insider, who has some friends inside Renault and Honda, said that Alonso wants another ONE YEAR deal with Honda but they only want a THREE YEAR deal. Barrichello confirmed to Orrichio, that Ross is about to confirm his line-up after Alonso´s refusal the three year deal.

Another interesting thing reported by Oricchio is that Ferrari has inside their boxes this weekend a Meteo France´s employee, to interpret the data from the satellite.
