Live Video with Live Commenting
So here’s the plan. Yesterday we released the beta version of a new live commenting system, and as that was designed to aid discussion during live video we figured we ought do something to test it out.
It’s the Hungarian Grand Prix next weekend, which means we’re due another episode of Inside Track and thus we’ll be filming the pieces to camera shortly.
If you’re around please fire up live commenting and let us know if you can both see us and talk to us at the same time. We’ll be doing the same so should be able to talk back in realtime… well hopefully anyway.

Thanks Christine and ‘me’ for letting us all have a laugh at your expense, but it was worth doing as you now know that the new Live Commenting page can deal with multiple post in a fairly short time, although it will be interesting to see how it copes with a couple of hundred comments an hour over the next race weekend.

‘me’ said that they would reduce the refresh from 60 secs down to about 10 during Live Commenting, which is what I want to see if it, and Media Temple, can cope with.

July 27th, 2008 at 7:37 pmme said:
it’s a variable figure, so we’ll take everyone’s opinion on what’s the ideal amount. once a second would probably kill the server, be once every sixty seconds is too long.

yeah you too.

we will have to see this weekend. I am strangely looking forward to the gp next weekend. ok it’s not the most exciting track, but the last 2 years have been eventful to say the least.

Interesting that Ron is already trying to defend himself:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/69473
July 27th, 2008 at 7:55 pmJoe said:
Ron says that they’re keeping the policy of equal drivers, but I remember Martin Whitmarsh saying after last season that they would get behind one driver if need be, and this surely must be a case of needing to. I can see McLaren throwing the title away again due to Heiki taking points off Lewis.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:59 pmSteven Roy said:
One thing that I notice that could be problematic is that to read comments other than those at the bottom. If you click ‘follow incoming comments’ as soon as a new comment comes in it appears at the bottom so if you are scrolling up to read a comment every time a new comment comes in the panel scrolls to the bottom of the comment list.
I can see people either losing track of comments or spending half the race switching ‘follow incoming comments’ off and on again. It may be worth considering a full length comments pane for race weekends to make following comments easier.
July 27th, 2008 at 8:00 pmlou said:
I couldn’t see Heikki pulling the same kinda stunt as Alonso did last year though.
July 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pmJoe said:
Heiki won’t throw tantrums like Alonso did, but he can finish just a place above Lewis when it’s perfectly reasonable for Heiki to let him through, taking crucial points away from his team-mate.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:00 pmDave Monks said:
I suppose that this only works if other people are awake at the same time to read the comments though… Living in New Zealand throws me out on all F1 ‘liveness’. I can wake up for the races, but you try typing coherently at 3AM!
July 27th, 2008 at 9:18 pmme said:
can certainly do that yup.
there is that, but we can try and vary the times of other live shows we do to compensate a little. it’s doubtful we’d do anything at 5am uk time though
i think we managed it once, but yeah for a whole season that could be an issue.

July 27th, 2008 at 10:01 pmJordan Allen said:
Why not try reducing the length of each scence so that Christine has less of an address, and less stuff to remember per scene…. Bot of course, you will need more scences.
And best of all, “me” will have more post production work to do.

I have it on good authority that ‘me’s’ real name is Stig and he didn’t want to be confused with the Top Gear Stig or the legendary Mr Blomqvist.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:06 pmJordan Allen said:
Nope. When I talk about myself, I use the third person. hence, I never us the 1st person “me”. So our techie geek is the “me” that I am refering to, which I think is named “Percival”.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:13 pmJordan Allen said:
Yes, I thought Christine would be interested in transferring more of the workload from her shoulders to “me” shoulders, so shorter scences will allow less chance of outtakes, and more patching up work for me to do.
And the upcoming circuit is pronounced “Hun-BORE-o-ring”
And they really need to work on the sneeky “product placement plugs” stuff. There was no label on the bottle that Chrisitne was drinking. Could have been Volka for all I know…

Yeah, I saw that earlier. I really hope he doesn’t do it, I find him quite boring to be honest. I’d love Alex Wurz though, he’d be awesome. Oh and Jos Verstappen! Imagine that pairing, XD.
