F1 Digest - Hungary Preview

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

It’s that time of year again, when F1 descends upon Hungary. All the drivers appear to like it, but is it a matter of protesting just that little bit too much?

Vital Statistics

  • Date: 3rd August
  • Circuit: Hungaroring
  • Length: 4.4km
  • Laps: 70
  • 2007 Winner: Lewis Hamilton

Preview

Glock returns to action and is looking forward to the race, as many of our drivers are. It seems that Hungary was a time of firsts for a lot of them, first win for Button, first race for Vettel. Nakajima is slightly nervous as he’s never driven on the track in an F1 car before. All this, plus a dusty track and no overtaking should lead to a less than stellar race.

There’s an element of both in the show. I believe that it’s worth remembering what happened last year in advance of the weekend, and then we hear what each of the drivers are thinking ahead of the race.

And now for the weather: scorchio!

It was very muggy when we landed yesterday and there was a brief but torrential downpour as we drove in to Budapest. The locals reckon it’s going to stay dry for the next few days.

what are we gonna do with our weekend, if we’re not spending it pouring over weather charts?

seeing as you’ve been there for all of 5 minutes, is there any news in paddock on macca’s four-paddled wheel? internet rumours suggest the team are gaining an unfair advantage having developed the standard ecu this year.

any sense of dissatisfaction in the pitlane, or is all sweetness and light after the maranello meet?

Great show. I will try to keep in touch this weekend. I am without TV or a land-line internet this weekend since I am finishing up moving to a new house. New one for the “You know your an F1 fan when…”

So back to the race. Anyone betting that Alonso holds up Piquet Jr. during qualifying because he beat him in the last race?

i am banking on it. he’s been far to sedate this year, we need some more door kicking action methinks.

what would be really nice is if kovi found his backbone and took the fight to lewis. i heard he left it at enstone last year and has been looking for it ever since :)

We have had a wonderful amount of good races this year. So I suppose one bad race is ok. We do have live commenting which should make it a little bit more exciting ;) I’m not sure on the probablilty of ferrari being back on form this week is though. Apparently they are using the avril wing, which they tested for a small amount of time on one day of testing last week. :/ They must have collected some very good data. FP1 should be interesting, won’t it be the first time Kimi has driven with the avril wing? not sure of how much of a difference it will make.

Absolutely agreed. However, I think he was required to turn his backbone in when he signed the dotted line at McLaren. I am really sensing another “Barrichello at Ferrari situation” shaping up here with Kovi.

if that’s true kovi’s career is pretty much over. at least rubens saw some proper action before he arrived at ferrari. all kovi has to his name is:

    - a decent second half to ‘07
    - should’ve won in australia

    it’s his choice i guess.

i thought coulthard underachieved when driving at mclaren, i wonder if kovi will fit into that same mould?

    Two pieces of good news.

Surely the FIA as a matter of course should be checking the engines of all cars that score points. Are they seriously now assuming everyone is being honest all the time and only testing randomly. Of course checking the point scorers engines/cars can be problematic. I remember a few years ago and I am not certain it was F1 where pretty much every car on the grid had the same minor illegality. I can’t even remember what it was. All of the point scorers cars were checked by the scrutineers and found to be illegal so the first guy out of the points was awarded the win. By the time scrutineering had finished all the other cars had gone so couldn’t be checked.

Kovi will prove to be really good in the end. Not just as good as Lewis but I can see him moving in two or three years and winning a championship elsewhere. Of course if Lewis goes to Ferrari he may just sit at McLaren and win.

    Uh oh. Rumbled!

The fruits of my researches so far on the four-paddle steering wheel: everyone I’ve spoken to has said it’s a perfectly legitimate gizmo. The rules stipulate that torque can’t be adjusted via a switch on the steering wheel, so this falls into the category of “clever dodge”. It doesn’t require any insider knowledge of the SECU.

The general feeling is one of “We wish we’d thought of that.” No one is suggesting that McLaren gained an unfair advantage – in fact, one (non-McLaren) team person said, “That’s just a conspiracy theory dreamed up by internet nutters.”

Every time a new type of aerodynamic device appears on a car there is a period of a few weeks before it acquires a name. For some reason a lot of the names are animal based - shark fins, dumbo ears and Super Aguri’s chicken wings. So I think the next time a new type of aerodynamic device turns up we should make a serious effort to have them called panda flaps. That would be the Brazillian Grand Prix of 2000. All but one of the cars finished the race with planks that were so worn that they breached the plank thickness rules. The stewards took one look at the consequences of a strict application of the rules and decided to let everyone off, Interlagos’ famously bumpy track giving the perfect excuse.

The only car that still met the regulations was Fisichella’s Benetton, which was doubly confusing because he was also the only driver to do a one-stop strategy and therefore should have had more wear on the plank than anybody else…

i think christine found out some more on this subject. schumi may have been heading to a private airfield.

McLaren bought the track years ago with the plan to move their whole team there so that they would have a private test track on their doorstep like Ferrari but in the end they decided that it would be unfair to ask their workforce to uproot their lives so they built MTC but without a track. I have no idea whether they still own it but I can’t remember them selling it. I can’t think why they would have hung on to it. I wonder if Michael’s meeting with Ron is connected to Anthony Hamilton’s meeting with Domenicali. There is a conspiracy theory for you.

I hate bringing up something totally off-topic (although I do that a lot : P) but, the FIA want to make the sport less expensive, and then they bring KERS in, which seems contradicting.

I know they want to make the sport greener, but that seems a bit pointless, they’re racing cars for god sake! With them wanting to make it betetr for the enviroment, they’re pushing up costs, just seems silly.

I totally agree Joe. You can add in that Max likes to promote himself as being responsible for the current state of F1 safety now introducing potentially dangerous technology to F1. The man is a bundle of contradictions. But then this is the man who is together with his wife even though they live in different countries.

If you want a good laugh, on F1 Fanatic in the build up to the last race, I made a series of predictions for the last race given certain weather conditions. The last one was:

    If hell freezes over:
    1: Sutil
    2: Piquet Jr.
    3: Le Seb

    I can’t believe that.
