Live Commenting: Hungary – Free Practice 1

As Formula One teams prepare to run some laps in Hungary we’ve found ourselves at a bit of a loose end. Unusually, the weather seems almost predictable this weekend, leaving us little to do but look to the track for some excitement.

This morning is expected to be hot and dry, although Brad pointed out that the city of Budapest experienced torrential rainfall yesterday evening, so there’s a very slim chance that some of Saturday or Sunday’s action could be rain affected.

On paper, warm temperatures appear to favour Ferrari, but we’ve speculated in the past that the red cars work better on a rubbered-in track, and seeing as this place is renowned for being something of a dust bowl, things still may not go their way. McLaren by comparison should be looking forward to a peaceful weekend after re-signing Heikki for a further year (his capitulation in Germany bearing fruit already).

Further down the field, Red Bull’s decision to run their Renault engine for a third race in a row doesn’t come into play until tomorrow. Glock recovered well from his shunt in the last race to test in Jerez so he’ll be on duty this morning and finally, keep an eye on Piquet, who’s probably still on cloud nine after his first F1 podium two weeks ago.

The on track action begins at 9am in the UK (or 10am local time). We’re testing the new live commenting system in anger for the first time today, so do let us know if it’s working for you.

We’ll be watching ITV’s live stream as per usual, as well as following live timing. Details of other means to keep up with the action are listed on our Formula 1 on the Internet page.

A circuit map and other useful resources can be found in the Drop.io box. Shout us if you’re around and feel free to add screenshots or anything else that grabs your attention this morning.

re: the live commenting system. have dropped the refresh rate to once every 20 seconds and have manipulated the page layout so that it takes up less screen space.

the arrangement isn’t ideal, and we’ll work on improving it during the weekend. any thoughts, complaints etc, please do say so.

By the way the pink thing is good, but it goes underneath my Post Comment button.

    Most likely IE’s fault.

not sure. i remember we looked into it before, because they had totally different rear wing configurations in the race. one was curved and the other flat.

i think the conclusion was it’s fine to do that. the liveries the same isn’t it, just a different surface area to cover?

That said, there isn’t a rule specifically banning Ferrari’s behaviour today (though the livery rule might be broken). The problem comes if they decide to change either car. The car that is scrutineered is supposed to substantially be the car that races. You can change some winglets around just fine, but something as big as a fin wouldn’t be easy to get within the parc fermé rule.

Track history and ownership from the track’s own website. When I see Lydden Hill I still think rallycross.

The track was founded by the late Bill Chesson and the Astra Motor Club in 1955. They promoted stock-car racing and grass-track racing for motorcycles, and it wasn’t until 1965 when asphalt was laid for the circuit, for hosting car racing up to Formula 3.

On February 4, 1967 the sport of Rallycross was born at Lydden. Combining tarmac and non-tarmac elements, the inaugural race was won by Vic Elford in a Porsche 911. Between 1973 and 1996 Lydden Circuit saw a total of 23 rounds for the Embassy/ERA European Rallycross Championships and FIA European Championships for Rallycross Drivers, all organised by the Thames Estuary Automobile Club (TEAC). To this day, Lydden, as the so-called “Home of Rallycross”, still holds British Rallycross Championship racing, especially with its Easter Monday meeting. For the 40th anniversary event in 2007, 8000 people packed into Lydden, which is currently the spectator record for the circuit.

In 1989, after disagreements between venue owner Chesson and the RAC MSA about the safety precautions of the track, the circuit was bought by plant-hire entrepreneur and regular rallycross competitor Tom Bissett.

In 1991 McLaren bought the track and leased it to the British Motorcycle Racing Club (BMCRC) from 1993 on, thus allowing both cars and bikes to have full use of the track. BMCRC have been based at Lydden since, and it forms this home track, playing host to the annual ‘Lord of Lydden’ and ‘Sidecar burnup’ races, together with a number of club motorcycle race meetings.

Another piece in the history of Lydden came in 2003, when McLaren had an application turned down for Lydden to become a private testing venue.

From 2008 on the new lease holder of the circuit will be, for at least five years, the Waste Recycling Consultant, former MSA British Rallycross Champion (2002 and 2005) and FIA European Rallycross Championship runner-up (1992) Pat Doran. Pat, an Englishman of Irish origin from Thorverton in Devon, is planning several improvements for the venue as well as an extension of the racing programme (for cars and bikes alike) and his oldest daughter Amy has been appointed as director for day-to-day running of the circuit.
