Live Commenting: Hungary - Free Practice 3
There were worrying noises coming from the paddock after yesterday’s practice sessions. One of those was a confident sounding Lewis Hamilton and the other was a relatively negative Kimi Räikkönen. It could of course be little more than gamesmanship on the part of this weekend’s two lead actors, or we could be looking at a McLaren front row lock-out this afternoon. Before we get there though, one final sixty minute practice session beckons.
Coulthard is now running his engine for a third race, while Force India have been forced to go back to their non-seamless-shift gearbox, in order that they don’t incur unnecessary penalties. Sebastian Vettel must be wondering what in the world he has to do to get through a whole practice session, and he’ll have his work cut out today playing catch up to his teammate. No doubt Germany feels like a lifetime ago.
Marginally ahead of Vettel we have a struggling Honda team, who’ve yet to get the best from their revised aero package and suspension. Their times yesterday were never comparable to the mid-field runners, and although they can bank on Force India losing two-tenths along with the gearbox, they must be concerned about missing the Q2 cut-off later today.
FP3 always sees us scouting for decent video coverage, and yesterday there appeared to be less around than usual. If you spot anything worth watching please let us know, otherwise it’s live timing or bust this morning.
The live commenting system is open to all and after yesterday success, we’re recommending it. Yell if you’re following the action this morning, won’t you?

improvements to live commenting are thus:
- follow comments enabled by default
- fixed the window “jumping” problem (when no new comments found)
still working on the IE7 “initial post” issue. if you sport any issues as a result of these changes, or anything else, please yell.

Having just watched the Live Comments on the recording of the inside track I can see now Christine why you prefer talking to Me on IM during the race! Can you explain on what basis your spreadsheet is predicting a Ferrari 1-2 {Steven Roy - 4 comments ago}
The session that most closely correlates to the race pace is used. It then adjusts the position earned in that session for this race according to the average difference between that session and the race, and then multiplies by the finishing rate to make the results of drivers who go out of lots of races more accurate. Then everyone is ranked according to the “raw” position calculated.
Since some (though not all) drivers’ qualifying positions more closely correlate to their race positions, the comparitor at this point in the weekend is provision. Albeit less provisional than the Friday one.
With the above in mind, this is how the Ferrari 1-2 was arrived at:
Massa’s most closely correlating session to use for race results is Saturday practise (the one we’ve just had). He came 2nd. His practise position is, on average, 0.08 places below his race position. After taking that and his finishing rate (0.80) into account, his “raw” finishing position should be 1.66.
Normally, 1.66 shouldn’t be a winning “raw” score, but the next lowest “raw” finishing position is Raikkonen.
Raikkonen’s most closely correlating session is Friday practise 1. He was 2nd in that session. His practise position is, on average, 0.2 places below his race position. His finishing rate is 0.9, though, so he ends up with a slightly higher score. So his “raw” performance score is 2.2.
Third in the predictor is Hamilton. On the most closely correlated session for him - Free Practise 1 - he was only 4th. His Free Practise 1 position is, on average, 0.1 places higher than his eventual race position. With a 0.9 finishing rate, his “raw” performance score is a mere 3.9.
Bear in mind that the comparitor doesn’t calculate if someone’s going to retire or not. Without the finishing rate adjustment, drivers who missed lots of races would end up with an unrealistically high score. For example, Adrian Sutil’s “raw” performance score would be P28.13 without the adjustment, but is a more realistic P16.88 with it.
Still, the spreadsheet is quite clear - it’ll be a Ferrari walkover, aided by the prediction that Massa will also get pole.

LadySnowcat, it’s based entirely on 2008 data. I don’t know how to get the differing factors involved from year to year to relate accurately.
Is it possible ever to have enough chocolate? {Steven Roy - 2 comments ago}
Of course it’s possible to have too much chocolate - thousands of overweight people will testify to that!
August 2nd, 2008 at 12:05 pmSteven Roy said:
Ali,
Thanks for the explanation. I still can’t see that the outcome will be the one it predicts but it has proved me wrong before. I am amazed at the amount of work and thought that you have put into it. It would be interesting to analyse the end of season data to see if it gets one driver right more often than the others or it is better at one track.
I see the race as something of a McLaren walkover and I would expect the BMWs to give Ferrari a very hard time.

There are quite often lulls in the racing where nobody seems to do much of anything. In which case I can use my ears to track the commentary and car noises and my eyes to read. Over the 12 years I’ve been doing it, I’ve found the technique works very well. There’s only been one race in that time (Brazil 2003) when I ended up not reading the book at some point in the race (excluding advert time).
