Welcome to Forgotten F1 Teams – a mini series from Sidepodcast chronicling the rise and fall of teams that couldn’t stay the distance. This is the fourth show, we’ve already looked at Simtek, Pacific and Forti, but today we’re talking about Arrows.
Arrows Grand Prix came to life in 1977, founded by previous Shadow employees, Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate – the surnames of whom spell out Arrows… sort of. Based in Milton Keynes, their Formula 1 entry was a bit of a rush job, with their first ever car being produced in just 53 days. Riccardo Patrese was brought on board to steer the car and the early signs were promising. They finished tenth in their first race in ‘78, almost won their second, and picked up some points in their third Grand Prix.
Unfortunately, the team didn’t have an easy start to life with some early controversies. Founder Franco Ambrosio had to leave the team after being found guilty of financial misconduct in Italy, and sent to prison. The team were then sued by Shadow for copyright on their chassis, which was upheld by the court. However, this didn’t stop them, as while the decision was being made over the the copied chassis, Arrows had built a brand new car, which then took to the track without them having to miss a race.
Patrese was involved in a serious multi-car pile up at the Italian Grand Prix that year. Fellow driver Ronnie Peterson died after the accident, and James Hunt, who was also involved, led a successful campaign to get Patrese banned from racing at the next Grand Prix.
In 1984, Arrows partnered with BMW, who brought their turbo engines on board, and the team received sponsorship from Barclay – a cigarette company. Their championship efforts improved, from 9th up to 8th the following year. In 1987, when BMW split from the team, things got even better. 6th in the championship that year, and 4th the next.
At the beginning of the next decade, the Japanese Footwork corporation became a prominent sponsor, and in 1991, this became the new name of the team. They kept it until 1996, when the sponsor withdrew support, and they became Arrows again. To replace Footwork, a new investor, Tom Walkinshaw was brought on board, and he successfully signed up defending champion Damon Hill. At the 1997 Hungarian GP, the team so very nearly got their first win, albeit mostly due to luck, but that ran out when a throttle problem meant Hill had to crawl to the finish handing the lead to Villeneuve on the final lap.
Walkinshaw gradually bought out ownership of the entire team, but under his reign, engine partnerships changed at the drop of a hat, and drivers were also coming and going. By 2002, Jos Verstappen was suing the team for breach of contract, Arrows was unsuccessfully trying to sue Pedro Diniz for leaving them, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen was suing them for not having been paid yet. By the middle of the season, Arrows had no money left, and suspicions were beginning to mount about their ability to continue in the championship. At the French Grand Prix, both drivers failed to qualify, but it appeared that they could have had they tried just that little bit harder. The data showed that both drivers had been competitive in the first two sectors but not in the last. They were threatened with bringing the sport into disrepute, trying not to qualify because they couldn’t afford to race. Before anything could be made of the situation though, the team had gone into liquidation.
A friend of Walkinshaw’s bought up some of the team’s assets to partner them with previous purchased Prost team assets, and enter Formula 1. The FIA disagreed. The rights for the chassis were picked up by Paul Stoddart of Minardi, and then by Super Aguri who ran a modified version in 2006.
Although compared to some of our Forgotten teams, lasting 15 years in the sport is a successful campaign, the team’s greatest “achievement” is having participated in 382 races without a win.
That’s it for this edition of Forgotten F1 Teams. Please let me know what you remember of the Arrows team on Sidepodcast.com or via the Voicemail – 0121 28 87225. I will be back tomorrow with our next Forgotten team.

That was a sad end to a really nice Grand Prix – especially enjoyable for Damon Hill fans like me, but I think most people enjoyed having an underdog stick two fingers up at Williams and Ferrari for nearly an entire race.

tis ok. I watched a vid on youtube of Jenson’s win to cheer me up
it certainly seems to produce some interesting news doesn’t it? If it’s not surpise winners, or heartbreaking storys, it’s fights between team mates. And people say hungary is boring
August 11th, 2008 at 00:17 #6 - me said:
so what we’re saying is “more hungary”? that’s a formula 1 first, isn’t it?
August 11th, 2008 at 00:27 #7 - lou said:
er most probably
It can produce some great races so yeah i think i am. It’s not as boring as barcelona so i think i can handle it on the calender a little longer

On the subject of boring tracks, how on earth does Catalunya have the highest number of wet races?
I find that amusing for such a crap track, I mean I’d rather hear James Allen talk about a Senna-esque walk that Lewis had to the shops when he was 10 instead of having to watch the Spanish GP from start to finish without turning over.
On topic, I liked Arrows. It was a shame for them not even trying to qualify sometimes in 2002, makes you wonder why they even turned up.

As Christine may already know, Franck was involved in an accident with a backmarker whilst battling for the lead in the closing laps, at Road America. Unfortunately, this caused something of an… err… ‘incident’ in the commentary box:

Yeah, it’s absolutely superb.
The commentators are John Hindhaugh (with the Mackem accent), Jeremy Shaw (former Eurosport Champ Car commentator, who’s also covered F1 for Channel 10 in Australia) and Katherine Legge.
I have to give full marks to Katherine – if she hadn’t stepped in the world could well have had another war on its hands!

Hey, the stupid cable company changed stations on me! I expecting “Christine’s House of F1 Horrors”….
Actually, this is what I was expecting from this series, the teams that did well, should have won races and championships, but where just lacking that one piece of the puzzle to get them to immortality. Greeting rid of Damon Hill earilier would have been a start…
Best thing that could have happend. This Villeneuve fan was overjoyed calling “almost” payback for Australia 1996….
I hope tomorrow’s team will be equally informative.

Hey Scott, is there anywhere I can find the video of this clip as I would love to see it. I think the commentators make fun of of an old CART villian of mine, Paul Tracey…. Loved it how thew one guy says he can only see out of one eye, I think he even wore glasses at all times, including while racing…..
August 11th, 2008 at 07:59 #21 - Journeyer said:
I think it was because they were tied to a contract stating they had to show up at every race weekend, lest they get sued? The only way you need not show up is if you’re… well, out of business.
Nice series, guys! I’ll listen to this – or maybe to the omnibus – when I have the time. FYI, I’m a HUGE fan of F1 Rejects, so it should be interesting to see how this stacks up.
August 11th, 2008 at 08:25 #22 - Christine said:
I’ve been watching a few of your comments, Jordan, and I’m sorry if you haven’t enjoyed the previous shows in this series.
What you will find is that the word forgotten is there for a reason. At least 80% of teams that have been forgotten have been because they, well, weren’t very good. Therefore, you’re going to have to expect 80% of the shows to cover those teams as well.
I wasn’t sure about looking at Arrows, to be honest, because I don’t really think they’re forgotten. Even I’d heard about them, knew of them, etc.
However, we are always open to suggestions, so if there are more successful teams you’d like to see covered, please share them.

I’m watching the Monaco 96 race on youtube atm and, Murray said that they couldn’t time pitstops because they weren’t allowed to drill holes for the sensors. Makes sense due to it being such a public area but, they time them now don’t they?
August 11th, 2008 at 15:12 #25 - me said:
that makes heaps more sense, thanks journeyer.
August 11th, 2008 at 15:14 #26 - Steven Roy said:
They built new pits and other facilities in the last few years so that is probably why. It is a bit rich that Monaco refused to let them drill a few holes when they get theor race for nothing while everyone else is paying $10-15 million.
August 11th, 2008 at 16:40 #27 - Stuart C said:
Afternoon all…
Yes indeed – although it’s not so much a matter of being sued, more a case of forfeiting the entry bond (which was scrapped a couple of years ago) and their share of the TV money.
August 11th, 2008 at 18:23 #28 - Jordan Allen said:
Nor I, to be honest. You can blame Your other virtual F1 team race engineer Gaulty for picking Arrows. I was hoping you would pick either Wolf F1, Hesketh or Zakspeed, depending where you want to go with this series.
Well, I just did not know what to expect for this series. I thought that you would be picking F1 horror stories, but when me stated he did not wish to make this podcast look like a rip-off of R1 rejects, I thought you guys would shy away from the the worst of the worst. And maybe pick good teams that, well, where extremely proper when our great-grnadparents where alive…. like Vanwall, for instance, or Maserati.
Or how really well known are, for example Penske F1, Graham Hill F1? John Surtess F1? And yet they were teams good enough to avoid the attentions of F1rejects, which is really, what you want right?
But anyways, keep up the good work, and Steven and Scott, it is up to you to keep Relentless Sidepodcast Panda-Cosworth Racing off Christine’s list of forgotten F1 teams…

August 11th, 2008 at 20:38 #31 - Jordan Allen said:
I try to be fair. I will admit to assuming you have a plan, until proven otherwise…..
If you are getting desparate, I think the inclusion of Farce, I mean Force India into the ranks of “Forgotten F1 Teams” would be a safe bet…the worst that can happen is that people will be banging on your doors seeking more phophecies….
Charge a shilling a head and you should be able to pay off the bandwidth rates and buy Toro Rosso with the spare change…
August 11th, 2008 at 20:43 #32 - Lynch said:
FYI: yeah! VBH is on 5th Gear!! I thought she was given the heave hoe, as she didnt feature in the adverts for the new series…. It would be cool if she went to the Beeb for the F1 coverage!

But I am not going to take a bullit that was meant for you, but headed my way because of Chrsitine’s misdirection.

yeah, but how can you say it wasn’t his fault either when you haven’t watched it either?
that’s why i’m going to watch it, so i can see what happened. i still support franck and still defend him, but i want to watch the incident so i can give my view on it. Yes it may well have been franck’s fault, but hopefully it wasn’t. I support Lewis but even I can criticise him for being an idiot sometimes a la Canada. Doesn’t mean I hate him. Same goes for Franck

Scott I think you need to think tactically here. Christine, as Team Owner, can fire you and this season’s line-ups are already settled. You could pay for a drive but do you want to drive for Zakspeed? Token?, Coloni? I guess the best bet would be Trojan but not for anything related to racing.
And why would she want to do that? Well, the rumour in the garage is that Chrisitne’s decided to become serious as a Team Owner, and has took to reading the book “The Prince” by Niccolò Machiavelli, to figure out how to run this operation. I heard she’s looking for “Examples” and you blaming her favourite driver that she is trying to line up as Test Driver, just placed yourself on the bulls-eye.

That’s why I’m currently downloading the race as I write this to watch the said incident between franck and the gt2 aston to see what the fuss the commentators were making was all about. Just because I said “we shall find out the truth” doesn’t mean I was actually blaming franck. it meant that we can actually see what happened in the accident.

Alright, I’m just gonna say it – that incident WAS Franck’s fault. Look at the replay, he’s miles back from the Aston so how he thinks he can get past from there is beyond me. Because of this, the Aston was oblivious that he was alongside, turned in on him and damaged the Acura in the process. That then lead to him getting stuck in the gravel further up the course. Like it or not, that’s my opinion.
If I may borrow the Top Gear slogan, Franck’s move was ambitious but rubbish, and somewhat audacious.

Christine’s productivity should hit the negative numbers if you click this link.

That link should be http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/ex_panda_station.html
It’s a .org not a .com. I saw the same thing last night and it is exactly the same feed I have as a gadget.

You have to be very careful with Python quotes. All it takes is one or two to appear and you will be inundated with them. GP Wizard ended up with a Python week not long ago because one quote begat another, then another then they were like tribbles. OOPS Ihave just crossed Monty Python with Star Trek. Who knows what might result?

Either link does work. I guess teh zoo has multiple domains for people who can not tell the difference between organizations that are supposed to make a profit (commerical and those that would like to make a profit (organization.
Well, I kinda figured that ex_ stood for exhibit, And one of those Panda does not like being the butt of jokes, as a matter of fact, hes got a vicious streak a mile wide, with long claws and big, sharp, nasty, pointy teeth, in short, it would do you a treat mate.

in that case, i’m not sure he’ll be distracting christine for very long.
are there any tiny little cute ones?

There were a couple that spent half an hour wrestling yesterday so I am sure Christine will be entertained.
However if she insists on only baby pandas Atlanta Zoo has a pandacam and they have cubs too. The camera only broadcasts from 10am to 5pm EST so I guess that is 3pm to 10pm in the UK.

Well, there are at least three of them that I spotted on the camera. And at the site their are 7 pictures with 7 different names, so anywhere from 3 to 7 pandas. Think there’s one around 1, one around 3 and their mother.

The San Diego pandas are a lot more entertaining than the Atlanta ones. The one in Atlanta that I can see is sleeping on a branch. Unless it is planning on falling off that is not very entertaining.

To be fair, I checked in an hour ago and the San Diego one was sitting, chewing.
I check it now, it hasn’t moved an inch. Still sitting, still chewing.
Something tells me that these Panda’s aren’t the most exciting animals in the world. Baby Panda’s, however, that’s a different story.

It looks like the pandas are sneakier than we thought. It looks like it is still there chewing but it got up and went for a walk when no-one was looking. I put a screen shot in drop.io of my screen set up including a pandaless cave in San Diego. I don’t know if the same one cam back or another one took its place.

You know, that could cause a real problem for the RSPCRF1 project. Now we need a panda exercise motivation programme…

It was a repeat – the second half should be broadcast at another time. The original may even still be on ITV Catch up if you’re quick.
