F1 Digest - Europe Free Practice

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

With the anticipation building for Valencia since before the Hungarian GP, it’s hardly surprising that today didn’t quite live up to it. However, there was still plenty to take in, and F1 Digest is here to wrap it all up.

Free Practice 1

Despite not knowing the track very well, there was the usual format of installation laps then a break in the action, but once it got going, it was fascinating to watch. Plenty of off-track action, although nothing series.

Free Practice 2

Some troubles with some intruders on the track couldn’t take away from the fact that our drivers were still struggling to get their heads around the circuit layout and the tyre demands.

Conclusions

The post-session quotes are fascinating if only because they are all the same. All but one of our drivers seem to adore the track, and everyone seems to have had the same kind of day. Still, I try to pick out the more salient points for your perusal.

is it just me, or did friday seem like a very long day?

i think it might have been all those corners.

yeah It did feel pretty long. I had even forgotten about the people on track. Too many corners! :P I’m finding it really hard to get an idea of which part of the track is which. Normally I have a vague idea at worst, but this time I’m clueless. Actually i know where the pits and the bridge are… but apart from that i have no clue :P

    Great quote from Alonso:

““I think going into turn 12 and going to turn 17, the two longest straights, are very similar, so one time I thought I was in turn 17 and I was in turn 12 and I missed the apex and vice-versa.”

XD. Best quote from him ever.

I’ve just caught up with all of the comments over the last few days. Big congrats to Lou and z-baumgartner!

Also I wanted to reply to Me’s comment on the potential London studio for the BBC.

Personally I think the idea stinks. I know some people think that having Steve and Mark wondering around like lost schoolboys looks a little less than pro but on the other hand I love that every single shot gives us access to the paddock.

Added to which they will never be able to interview anyone on screen if they don’t bring their own HD equipment. They may well go for this suggestion but it makes me feel that F1 will feel further away next year. And I hate that. I want to be as close to the action as I can get.

I was hoping that they would be going the other way. Really feeling part of the circuit.

Suzi Perry doesn’t have a London studio for MotoGP? Why would they change it for F1?

On the live commenting, live… thing the wonderful new bit of kit that remembers your name puts a + in my name: Alex+Andronov but when I press publish it disappears. This is literally the least important bug of all time :)

You’re all a bit too keen, eh? I’m just about to write the post now, so should be up in about ten minutes or so.

Alex - Re. the + in your comments. I told the snoozing man and he said: “Weird,” and went back to sleep. I think that means it’s on his to-do list, but we’ll let you know. :)

We are a very demanding bunch!

Maybe this will make him even more uber efficient. Perhaps he’ll start coding in his sleep now!

Can you imagine what wonderful things he would be able to come up with then? Maybe the ability to move the boxes round like the BBC.
