Live Commenting: Europe - The Race
Welcome to the inaugural race day for the Valencian street circuit. Things look to be a little brighter today in terms of the weather, with no rain expected for the afternoon, although there were some showers overnight. This will have cleaned the track of rubber somewhat, but with a couple of support races taking place before the race, it remains to be seen how this will affect our drivers.
Talking of support series, the GP2 feature race yesterday held some clues as to what to expect as soon as the lights go out. For reasons best known to himself, Mr. Whiting has decided to switch over the pole positions at the last minute. I believe it was announced just before qualifying, after the practice sessions had been observed. For the GP2 event, the pole sitter simply lined up one place back on the grid, followed by the rest of the field. At least they didn’t have to have the whole place repainted!
Off the grid, the 3rd and 5th place GP2-ers got past their counterparts in 2nd and 4th, meaning that the dirty side of the grid is a real hindrance here just like Hungary. For Hamilton and Raikkonen this is not the place to be, and the start is going to be crucial.
As has been mentioned previously, a lot of teams have been tweaking their strategy to include the possibility of a safety car. In fact, some teams are positively hoping for it so they can make the most of a difficult afternoon. If there is a safety car, it’s likely going to be a long one, as aside from the massive run off areas, there seems to be little room for manoeuvre around the extensive circuit.
Here are some links that might be useful:

minor change to the live commenting page today. it now sits centrally on the page by default (except in internet explorer). this matches how the rest of the site looks.
you can still shrink the browser window in order to make things fit on your screen, but after looking at some of the screenshots you guys were sending us yesterday, starting in the middle seems like a good idea.
do let us know if this causes any problems though.

ooh, predictions. hmm, i’m thinking someone’s going to run out of fuel under the safety car, so:
1) kovi
2) kimi
3) vettel
4) nick
5) fernando
lewis and massa to tangle and kubica to go too marginal on the fuel loads.

I hope not - Massa deserved to be winner of the last race - he is on pole for this race. I think BMW Sauber might well end up going too marginal. I think practice flattered they still do not have race pace compared to the others. Hoping LeSeb gets into the top 10.

i wouldn’t be surprised if mclaren had assumed pole was for the taking, if so, they now either sit it out and wait for massa to stop or encourage lewis to go for broke into the first corner (or two). lewis has more to lose at the moment though and massa ideally needs him to score badly.

pat symonds on overtaking:
“In theory, turns 8, 12 and 17 offer opportunities, but I don’t think we will see much. In my opinion, the best place to try something is the last corner as we saw a few manoeuvres there in GP2. The rest of the track can be easy to make a mistake on and so you may be able to force your rival into a mistake by putting pressure on him and gain a position that way.”

Running a bit late but ready to go.
Lewis fan here. I think he will only go one lap longer than Massa for first pitstops. I think we will see a similar scenario to the last race and we will see what would have happened had Lewis not had the tyre problem. I think he will fill longer for the second stint in case of safety cars.
