You Know We’re Going to Talk About It

For reasons that I may never understand, we’ve been coerced into another live show this week. There’s been no time for planning so it’ll be exactly the same as last time, although maybe a bit shorter.

Because it’s such a hot topic, there’s no question the FIA / Ferrari / Massa pitlane incident will crop up at some point and just to throw a curveball into the proceedings, we’re going to attempt to take some skype calls.

If you’ve been stewing over the FIA’s ineptitude for the past 24 hours, now might be a good time to get it out of your system. The number is 0121 28 87225 if you’re in the UK, or +44 121 28 87225 from elsewhere. You can also call us using the Skype name sidepodcast which has the added benefit of being free. Please remember you’re live to the world though, so try and keep it clean!

The plan is to go online at 3pm BST, although we’re running a little late already. Please join us if you can, and click the red logo in the corner to be directed to the Live Commenting Live… Thing. We’ll be there shortly!

Update: The chat thingy went a bit awry, so we did a second broadcast.

Big thanks to Alex from sofaf1 for being our technical guinea pig on this one.

    My guess is that it will be a return issue. IE sometimes renders returns. It is supposed to be whitespace independent but sometimes it forgets. If you take out the returns between the pictures it might just work.

The beauty of you going live means we get to catch the funny moments etc. It’s great to see the behind the scenes and it’s also brilliant to have such interaction with you. it means the edited podcast won’t go out until monday though.

    That sounds great. It would really add to the Grand Prix build up. :D However make sure it’s not way to much hastle for you two. You both do soo much for sidepodcast already. That is the point of being live. You don’t know what you are going to get. If it was always super slick it would be boring. You have two tings that are always going to screw up somewhere along the line. Real people and technology. Put them together and you will occasionally have problems but having problem shows will make the good ones even better.

    I actually thought that this week’s show was considerably better than the first. Up until around three quarters of the way through, it was all going extremely well, and came across as well polished. It was only the last segment when ‘me’ and yourself struggled to get your words out, but that’s perfectly understandable given that this was only your second effort. sorry, i meant the weekly show we do goes out to thousands of people, and presumably they download it because they like it as it is. so we didn’t want to change the format and suddenly go laid back and talky, which is why it remains tight and edited.

    “who decides which pit box everybody goes in”

    The last I heard was that it came down to an agreement between Ecclestone and Mosley. Years and years ago, Mosley allowed Bernie to make the final decision on garage allocation, and Bernie based it on the results of the previous constructors championship. The winning team can decide if they are at the start or end of the pitlane and the other teams follow the order of points finish from the previous year. Regarding McLaren this year, Bernie broke his arrangement, and that annoyed Max which is why he apparently sent Benrie a letter saying something along the lines of “others have complained, revert to your old way of doing it”.

    One of the biggest seems to be Moohead Radio. I’m not sure whether I’d recommend it, though. It used to be on Mogulus, but has moved over the blogTV. There was some info on the Mogulus website about how they took Skype calls, I’ll see whether I can dig it out.

    Have you registered an account at Mogulus? They provide a seriously impressive flash-based toolkit, which allows you to do things like show photos, and insert audio and video packages into live shows. Yaika is an interesting platform, too.

    The downside to Mogulus, and this type of website in general, is that the majority of viewers seem to use it to kill time, and have only limited interest in the shows. As a result, the Skype calls and discussion that takes place in the chat rooms, can be somewhat moronic, to put it mildly.

    I’ve something else to mention, but will do so in another comment, to avoid the spam filter.

    Here’s the other one that’s crucial for this weekend:

    16.1 “Incident” means any occurrence or series of occurrences involving one or more drivers, or any action by any driver, which is reported to the stewards by the race director (or noted by the stewards and referred to the race director for investigation) which :
    - necessitated the suspension of a race under Article 41 ;
    - constituted a breach of these Sporting Regulations or the Code ;
    - caused a false start by one or more cars ;
    - caused a collision ;
    - forced a driver off the track ;
    - illegitimately prevented a legitimate overtaking manoeuvre by a driver ;
    - illegitimately impeded another driver during overtaking.
    Unless it was completely clear that a driver was in breach of any of the above, any incidents involving
    more than one car will normally be investigated after the race.

    That last bit makes it look like they did follow the rules. And you can see why Ferrari were so keen to stress that Sutil wasn’t impeded.

    Play Two UK is basically their talk radio station. But they promote new media heavily. Obviously listeners are able to call in, but they encourage webcam usage, and accept callers by Skype. As well as allowing you to listen through their website, they also have various studio cams, allowing you to see both the caller and the DJ. They do seem to be a long way ahead of any mainstream station, in this respect.

    Behringer B-1 Mic plugged via XLR connector to a Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro Mixer. Mixer Tape Out to line in of desktop (this is for the audio stream and audio archive of the show)

    Phone Calls: We use a Comrex Stac 6 phone interface mated with 2 Vonage IP phone lines plus a transparent 877 number from Vonage. This allows our viewers to call in toll free! We use a standard handset phone that hooks into the Stac 6 handset hardware. I answer calls as the lines light up. The Stac 6 controls caller levels.

    Studio cohost: We use 2 Comrex Access units. These devices connect my co-host and I together through the internet WITHOUT TYING UP A PHONE LINE! The Comrex Access connects to a static IP port in my cable modem. Even though we are 2000 miles apart, we sound like we are in the studio together. The Comrex Access utilizes low latency audio codecs so we have virtually no lag, as well as high fidelity. This is important because it enables us to send one high quality audio signal to the Mogulus studio, containing both of us, as well as our phone callers.

    Mogulus Studio: Next we run from the Main Out of our Mackie Console to the Line In of a laptop that is ethernet connected to my cable modem. We have a 15Mbps download, 2Mbps upload broadband connection. This sends all of our show audio to the Mogulus Studio, so everyone can be heard. Finally, we connect the laptop USB out to our Mackie Channel strip, using a USB sound card. This enables viewers to hear all audio from the videos we pull from the internet and create ourselves. All we do is “un-mute” the channel whenever we run a video that originates from the Mogulus Studio.

    Video: I use a Canon GL1 3 CCD camera plugged into the laptop via firewire. This camera can be manually adjusted for low light performance. My co-host uses a standard high end webcam!

    The end result is a program with sound quality that equals FM radio at its best.

    I still had the live app open in one of my tabs, and I presume it just started again. I thought I had navigated to a website that auto-plays music and was about to start swearing, but when I put my headphones in again I realised it was you. So yeah, it must just autoplay. And thinking about it, whenever I open up the live app, it buffers for a few seconds and then automatically starts.

    I was really worried about how it might sound if we talked over eachother. So haven’t heard how well it works I would have laughed more and said “yeah” like me does more. But I was trying to stop myself incase it stopped the recording working well (and also I didn’t want to get into a retake type situation).

    ok cool. i’m looking forward to it very much. i watched the recording with alex and it looked and sounded like a lot of fun.

    While listening to it, I had a thought – would having occasional guest callers via skype be feasible. what i mean is something like “and to give his/her views on the week’s events via skype we have such-and-such.” or something like that.

    i dunno, it’s just a thought. i just wondered because it might be cool to hear someone else speak out about their opinions on current f1 news.

    that’s pretty much what we were aiming for today. it was basically what we were alluding to with phone numbers in the post above.

    no idea how it’ll work, but maybe we’ll leave the lines open and answer if someone rings, or maybe we ask for callers on a specific subject.

At the time I didn’t have a good view (jumpy pixelated webstream vision) of what happened. After seeing it on TV I stand corrected and humbly apologise for any offence I may have caused to my Italian friends.It was a hefty shunt for him. Thanks to goes to ‘me’ and Christine for all the work you guys put in.

    not a problem rocket, appreciate the comment. if we’d felt them to be in poor taste we would have let you know at the time, and i’m sure others would’ve done the same.

    Come to think about it, that’s what got me to argee to training Lou….. :P .

    In this case, attempting to get DOSBOX to work on my computer. Mostly successfully, but still I probably should be on the Net more ;)

    As it happens, there is provision for punishing this kind of incident (and all other in-race incidents) in Article 16.3 of the Sporting Regulations. It is one of the four punishments below:

    a) a drive-through penalty
    b) a 10-second stop-go penalty
    c) a 10-place grid drop at the next race
    d) (if the penalty is issued in the last five laps or after the race) a 25-second penalty

    There is no provision whatsoever for a fine to be given, either on its own or alongside any of the penalties above.

    The FIA have therefore breached Article 16.3 – either Massa was innocent, in which case no penalty should have been given or he was guilty, in which case one of the four punishments above (and only one of the four punishments above) should have been issued.

    Normally it is because it has the best and biggest facilities, but evidently Ferrari decided that it preferred having the end-of-pits advantage this time around.

    Has there been an update on Kimi’s mechanic? { – 419 comments ago}

    Mr. Timpani (the mechanic in question) has a fractured toe, but nothing else is wrong, according to Ferrari.

    It says a lot about F1 that Massa gets a fine for something out of his control, and Kimi escapes from punishment after hurting a mechanic. {Dom – 404 comments ago }

    The FIA tends to assume that teams pay driver fines for them, and that injured mechanics that don’t inconvenience other competitors (including those on the same team) are a team discipline issue. It is ironic though.

    it’s Spa so it’s likely to do both. {Flibster – 400 comments ago}

    So presumably BMW will win if both Ferrari and McLaren are defeated by the conditions :)

    It wasn’t Massa’s fault. Apparently it was Sutils fault. {Flibster – 398 comments ago}

    Someone needs to remind Massa of Article 23.1d of the Sporting Regulations, which says

    When cars are permitted to leave the pit lane they must do so in the order they arrived at the end of the pit lane unless another car is unduly delayed.

    Had Massa stopped to let Massa out, Massa would have unduly delayed Sutil and Felipe would therefore have been given a penalty (to add to the fine already meted out). Sutil was merely saving him some trouble by complying with the regulations. If the Ferrari team can’t spot Adrian coming down the pit lane, it is not Adrian’s fault – it is the fault of whoever failed to spot him in time to stop Massa.

    FIA being inconsistant?

    Who woulda thunked it. {Flibster – 395 comments ago}

    Inconsistent behaviour from the FIA is very consistent behaviour for the FIA.

    Try saying that ten times quickly…

    Sato-Senna in 09 is rumoured. {Dom – 323 comments ago}

    That sounds about as plausible as a La Canta-Inoue line-up for STR next year. Senna I can believe. I can’t see how Sato is going to be more attractive to STR than Buemi (though given how quickly STR can fall out of love with drivers, I can believe that they may be thinking of replacing Bourdais :( )

    very true.

    life would be incredibly dull if they weren’t so patently biased wouldn’t it? all we’d have to talk about is how a reigning world champion could possibly be as useless as kimi was on sunday.

    The maps stuff is doing my head in, to be honest. I’m getting through it, slowly, all 2200+ of the blasted things. Key thing for me at the moment is getting BF1 back up to speed again. Recent posts garnered a few comments so the regular peeps are still there, for which I am incredibly grateful to.

    Also been fixing a few issues with the longevity of the pages. I worked out how to keep older pages for future reference and still marry them up with newer pages – just requires organisation and the right URL/permalink. And I also noticed Google Earth had updated a couple of the circuits on the calendar, so I did that for BF1. They updated the Shanghai circuit, but only the colour/res, they’re still not showing the track, just the building site.

    I know many of us are guilty of spending too much on our hobbies, but they’ve invested a serious amount in equipment. They could be aiming to attract a sponsor, but I caught one of their live shows the other week, and it only had around 25 viewers whilst I was watching.

    Personally, I think they would have been better off directing their not insignificant funding towards marketing, rather than equipment.

    been looking into camtwist today. it’s my new favourite app, but combined with flash encoding it pushes both processor cores up to 100%. need to have a bit of a rethink.
