Episode 75 - Just Listening to Your Talky Thing-a-ma-gig

Sidepodcast logo

The second week in a row in which we feature a guest, and this time there’s some insight into turning old technologies into the future.

Intro

There’s this new idea about gathering together news stories and separating them into those that have been good and those that have been bad. Where have we heard that before?

Good Week / Bad Week

Good week for Ferrari and Takuma Sato as they’re both sorting out their drives for next year, but a bad week for Nurburgring and Valencia as the organisers have some work to do.

News and Views

A quick catchup of testing this week at Monza, which Renault’s determination to go slowly whatever the costs, and Force India possibly evaluating their drivers. We talk to Scott Woodwiss about his thoughts on this season compared to others, the regulation changes, and how F1 can get back to America.

Prost Questionnaire

Thanks to Alex Andronov, our guest from last week, we have a new feature for guests in which they are subjected to ten quick-fire questions.

Feedback

A voicemail from Shaun, some more You Know You’re an F1 Fan… entries, and TV coverage in Mexico.

Housekeeping

With a brand new Sunday show on the way, this one becomes F1 Debrief, and look forward to The Parade Lap next weekend.

scott, please don’t sweat digging out your memorabilia, christine somehow managed to finish the show tonight / this morning. we also nicked your piccy from bebo, hope that’s ok?

my job once these things are complete, is to listen back to the show and make sure it sounds as it should. frankly i’m too damn tired, so have uploaded and am now going to sleep.

pls yell if you spot and issues and we’ll fix in the morning!

so here’s what i’m thinking (but don’t tell christine). if the studio is set up on a sunday morning. we could do a live pre-race show (mostly chilled music and bits of chat). then leave everything plugged in to do a live show in the evening (for us / candia / australia listeners).

it means the edited podcast won’t go out until monday though.

    thoughts?

… it was your idea :P

    everything seems fine :)

A great podcast :) integrating the live comments seems to work really well. I liked the interview too, it would be cool if you made them a semi regular thing (as in not every week). Would be a nice addition to the off season shows too.

I knew it wasn’t my idea. I had nothing to do with it Christine it was all ‘me’.

Besides Christine can’t complain. Last week she didn’t want more live shows yet yesterday she wanted all the shows to be live so whats another hour?

Thank you to Lou for proving it was not my fault.:) Since we are dealing with F1 I am sure that more than meets Max’s level of require proof.

    Talking about the engines….

Also remember that back in the 80’s they didn’t have the pneumatic valve systems that they have now. They purely used springs. This limited them to 16000rpm as opposed to the 19000rpm limits we have now. That made the engine sound a lot different back then.

When you consider thats 2000rpm down on the 21000rpm peaks we were having at then end of the V10 era.

Engine sounds from outside will remain similar, but with a turbo whistle and the wastegate chatter *if you can hear it over the engines*

yes and no. mario was born in italy, he just acquired US citizenship at an early age.

Would swallowing a pen lid classify as a “sporting-related” injury roughly on the same level as “Massa on a lift?”

I don’t think that Kimi is ‘bored’ - ‘distracted’ may be a better way of putting it, or ‘lacking in focus’ maybe?

I remember when Kimi first went to Ferrari’ people who knew about Kimi’s private life whispered that he may have trouble keeping his mind on the job.

You have to say that while Kimi may have chaffed in the McLaren environment, they did get a lot more out of him as a driver than Ferrari are able to.

Assuming it was a ventilated pen lid, I’d say so. Otherwise it’s probably a sporting-related death. Though hopefully me will have managed not to swallow the pen lid in the end, thus keeping the debate moot.

…sorry, I can’t say that and mean it. I love you all, I promise. IE8 actually looks to be another serious improvement - Microsoft are finally sorting themselves out.

Its more or less the same in all sports. Footballers nowadays play for countries their mam or grandmother were born in. Speedway riders only have a few places which hand licenses out, that is why a Norwegian is riding under a Polish license

Yeah, I was also wondering (last night talking to myself in a monologue after “testing” a new brand of local wine) why on earth Renault factory team and Red Bull “mothership” team are wasting time on their own? Wouldn’t it be easier to merge these two operations, with superbudget, massive brain power and good drivers (I think 2009 RBR driver line-up looks more promising than yet-to-materialize-flavio-managed-cheap-driver-pulp Renault thing; man, they gotta get rid of expensive and useless Alonso circa 2008 and do it ASAP) they could imitate williams-renault 1990s partnership, I bet Carlos Ghosn would love that? I mean, let’s face it - or let RF1 bosses face it - they’re basically back to 1998-2001 Benetton situation, odd podium here and there but nothing else.

Besides, Dacia brand is probably outselling Renault and Nissan right now, I’m thinking of buying Dacia myself, cheap and angry car. Who needs this “Formula 1 for car manufacturers” thing if none of those currently involved in F1 sell cheap cars? If only they aim at middle-class fat family men who like to crash fast German cars on public roads while on their way to the nearest restaurant? Come on, private teams is all I want, less PR and more action.

And on a final note - the Mole column is back with some decent analysis. Finally.

I was forced to use a Mac Pro for a few weeks. I was so glad to get back to a real PC afterwards.

    Anyway, back to F1.

Anyone mentioned the rumours of Coulthard leaving after Monza? Bringing Vettel up a few races early and giving them the opportunity to try out some new boys in the Toro Rosso. Sato, Senna etc….

Imagine Sato and Senna in the same team together - how many broken cars can they cope with there?

  50. September 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 amSteven Roy said:

Normally I like the Mole but the latest column is just ridiculous. The idea that a turbocharger is green because it recovers energy from the exhaust is ridiculously misleading. That is a bigger lie than KERS being good for road cars. A turbo recovers exhaust enrgy to power an air pump so that more fuel can be pumped in and burnt. That is not green. The idea that F1 should have small turbos. Yeeeuchhh! How small 600-800cc? Are we really going to have smaller engines in F1 cars than on Moto GP bikes?

Active aero with auto- turbulence-sensors. This is the F1 drivers championship not the Eurofighter Typhoon championship.

It is almost like the Mole has been replaced and someone else has written the column. Maybe Max has infiltrated the department and replaced the Mole with his place man. Alan Donnelly or someone.

That is precisely my point. BMW had around 1500bhp in qualifying trim and were racing with around 1200bhp. I say around because their dynamometer only went to around 1200 so they had to extrapolate. Add in 20 years of new materials, electronics, software and all the new engine knowledge and 2000bhp is not far away and development will start from there. So to get around similar levels of performance as now you need less than half. Half would give 1000bhp ish but you now have a massively lighter engine. Bear in mind we have more power now from a rev restricted, materials restricted 2.4 V8 than we had from unlimited 3 litres when the turbos were around.

Well, I’m always angling for a pint from anyone who’s willing to to be angled. :P But reading between the lines, all I’m doing is voicing opinion and hopefully generating thoughts.

Thanks for manually adding trackback, I appreciate it. My own post trackbacked to my own (other) post, so it should have worked cross-sites, especially as we use the same CMS. I’ll look into it at the weekend and see if there’s any weird issues happening at my end.

This should really be in the mangled pronoun thread but if drivers can mangle their pronouns I should be able to mangle the location of my comments.

I have just started the latest issue of Motor Sport and I have to say it is a cracker and I found a very interesting pronoun related comment from Eddie Cheever. In the original thread I said that Nigel Mansell was the ultimate user of ‘we’ instead of I. Now according to Cheever it turns out the whole thing is a complete affectation.

Cheever is talking about the short lived GP Masters series. “When I was talking to Mansell on his own, it was just Nigel and me, but as soon as anyone else came into the room the ‘we’ (Cheever’s quote marks) thing came out again - you know , ‘We are not happy with the car…’ What the hell’s that all about? Does anybody know?”

I have to say I am amazed by this. Not that Mansell was capable of an affectation because they were his stock in trade but that such a thing maintained over more than two decades could be an affectation.

By the way, it struck me last night (as I was drying the dishes) that Eric used to write ‘Eff One’ rather than the Mole. So it’s back to the drawing board.

Not that Mansell was capable of an affectation because they were his stock in trade but that such a thing maintained over more than two decades could be an affectation.

I think the problem with affectations is that they develop their own momentum and the ‘affectator’ can’t help but do them once he/she has an audience…

Do I have to do everything round here?

If when you are sober you can write anything worthy an alcoholic beverage try getting drunk first and writing afterwards. If you produce something worthy of the drink you have an ongoing model to work to if not who cares you will be happy anyway. The other option is change the name on something Christine wrote and take credit for it.

This advice is brought to you by Philips shavers proving it is as CLOSE to good advice as possible.

I tried that once when I was 18. I’m pretty sure peach schnapps don’t burn the back of your throat (or feel like they are) or taste quite that oily (as in, it tasted like there was more oil than fruit).
