F1 Digest - Belgium Qualifying

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

The rain continues, but it’s not enough to see a crazy grid in qualifying. Still, there’s a couple of things to note, and F1 Digest is here to straighten it all out for you.

Free Practice 3

A slow session with the rain coming on and off meant that tyre issues and setup changes were a real problem. Button didn’t make a very good start at all.

Qualifying

Bourdais topped the first session which gave us false hope that it was going to be another mixed up session. It wasn’t. The only other notable thing was Force India almost making it through to the second session, and failing.

Conclusions

A lot of drivers are relatively satisfied with what they achieved today considering the conditions, but know that it really all comes down to tomorrow. If it rains, which is looking less likely, the whole thing is going to be, as Massa puts it, a lottery.

Thanks for the summary - unfortunately no chance to watch and then the Internet connection died - so a very useful summary. Hoping there is significance in Heidfeld being the fastest of the rest. I think Webber did really well to get into seventh and all of those who have Alonso in their Fantasy team - he looks set to be competitive. Given that all the Red Bull Squad got into the the top 10 other than DC - he can only be thinking of his forthcoming retirement. In my Fantasy Team I invested heavily in Toyota and Force India - oh dear!

regardless of that, he still deserves the penalty.

Having had to miss Q2 and Q3 I found reading through the live comments and listening to this show very useful.

I thought it was obvious after Q1 that Lewis had pole sewn up but I am surprised to see Massa second. I will try to be on time for the Parade Lap show since I am getting the blame for its existence. I think I should demand a DNA test.

but kimi didn’t get one and sutil lost a whole lot more.

It wasn’t me but I’d happily take the blame! I had thought about suggesting it earlier. I’m safe from ‘The Wrath of Christine’ down here in the colonies, right?

I know Garageband can automatically record both audio and video iChat conversations. I assume you will be using Skype - what do you use to record it?

After so much has been said about ITV’s favouritism towards Hamilton, I can’t believe you managed to completely miss out Reigning World Driver’s Champion - Raikkonen from the starting grid summary. 5:13 onwards I’m sure he should be in there somewhere!

I’m only having a bit of fun (although you did actually miss him out!) You provide a great service here and I love listening to your Podcasts. Can’t imagine how much time and work you need to put in to create these great reports so quickly.

    As a genetist, I could help :)

here’s hoping for a great race.

Webber’s 7th position (again….) shows that 7 laps in FP2 doesn’t really matter. maybe Force India should try the same approach :)

What a ridiculous mistake, thanks for spotting it. Really sorry, I will try and fix this at some point.

not at all jay, a win from kimi will increase the likelihood of the championship going down to the wire.

I reckon for this morning’s Parade Lap, we should have a bunch of topics to discuss, like how we think certain drivers will do and predictions and the like. kind of something to fill the time and chat about. Just a thought :)

it’s a bit more complicated than that. our two mics go into the mac, a webcam goes into vista and then skype calls come in via the second mac.

quite a complicated setup, but once we know what we’re doing we’ll post some piccies.

we have nothing more than a vague list of topics, plus some songs to play. feel free to throw whatever you like into the mix :)

by the way, I found this today,
    http://www.youtube.com/user/ferrariworld
haven’t looked too much at it yet but it might give some insight into the ferrari world. seems to be the official propaganda machine. i wonder if they talk much about that 10,000 euro fine from last race…

I am now in the process of updating my comparitor. I am pleased to report the joint highest accuracy yet from the device (20% - the Hondas and the Finns) though I am somewhat dubious as to whether my glitch prevention technique actually worked. Also, Barrichello’s prediction changed to a wrong one when the Saturday free practise times were added.

Revised predictions for the race are:

    Kovalainen-Hamilton
    Heidfeld-Massa
    Alonso-Raikkonen

Sutil, who was previously predicted to be 4th, is now predicted to be 8th in the light of Saturday’s performance. If he manages that from 18th, I’ll be well impressed…

Now have your say...
