Opinions on Hamilton’s Penalty? This is the Place to Be

If you’re not sick of us by now, then this is the place to be. We’re recording the first official episode of F1 Debrief, otherwise known as Sidepodcast Episode 76.

What a day we’ve had! The race at Spa was pretty mega in itself, and then you add in the controversial penalties and the enormous amounts of discussion that follow such decisions, and you’re left with a brilliant Sunday afternoon.

This show will touch on such matters as well as others, but more than anything we want your thoughts. As ever the live commenting will be go, go, go, click the triangle in the corner to get to the groovy auto-refresh page. We also want to hear your voice though, and if you’re willing to talk to us, then Skype is the place to be. More details coming up in the show.

We’ve been a bit pushed today, as you can imagine, so we need your help more than ever. Be prepared to dive in with thoughts, corrections, opinions, anything that can make the show a much better thing to behold. We’ll hopefully be going live at 9:15pm BST (running a bit late already) and would love to see you there.

I think the Hamilton penalty was touch-and-go. I had initially suspected that Lewis might not have given the place back in time for the sensors to have registered it (and obviously by the end of the first corner he was back in the lead), but I read “after viewing the footage” in the steward’s reasoning, which threw the whole thing in doubt again.

That said, having merely doubts over the validity of a steward’s decision makes a nice change these days - usually I end up concluding the decision was unequivocally bad. However, the fact that it penalises a McLaren driver in favour of a Ferrari one means that the stewards will get little sympathy from any British corner other than mine.

Have never been able to get the Justin TV feed to work. It just says “Not Broadcasting” So here are my thoughts on the above question Christine raised …

Chicanes have a purpose to slow down where the track is deemed to be getting too fast and/or to add spectator interest. Lewis came into the chicane very fast - would he have made it if there was no car in the way - not sure, reckon he still might have needed the escape route. Whatever people say Kimi had every right to keep on the racing line and Lewis was never really ahead entering the chicane. However, Lewis did seem to have enough speed to overtake on the straight exiting the chicane and indeed gets level with Kimi while in top gear. This certainly suggests some advantage thsat did not exit in previous laps. Further he did not actually overtake by out-braking but on straight-line speed. The problem is if this goes without a penalty many drivers will try the same/similar tricks and it is going to end in some spills if not some more serious tears. In this respect I think there is validity for a penalty - to prevent drivers taking advantage of a chicane. I think the team needs to know straight away so their driver is given a chance to correct the situation. If this was Lewis’s first time I might have been a little more lenient but it is a similar situation to France. However, I think the punishment was a “bit harsh”. Personally I do not like “meddling” with the results after the event - certainly they need to be confirmed within 90 mins. The alternative mention was a 10 place grid drop - I think this could be even damaging to Lewis’s World Championship chances. So my suggestion would be a five place grid slot drop at the next race - its maintaining the incentive for fair racing but is not so punitive as to wreck the chances of a driver doing well. This would mean if Lewis gets pole he would start from sixth and with some extra effort the situation is salvageable and he could win. I do not respect McLaren for contesting the issue though - most teams would not contest under these circumstances. Conditions were crazy so why does Toyota not contest Glock losing his point? I doubt that Toyota will, which is why I respect that team more than Macca.

He decided to cut the chicane, fine, and gave back the position. Very good.
However he did not concede the advantage his cutting the chicane had given him by immediately making full use of Kimi’s slipstream, to which he wouldn’t have had the opportunity if he had not cut the chicane and therefor making it an advantage.
So looking at it that way, a penalty would be justified.

In normal racing circumstances this would have been penalized with a drive through. HOWEVER, in no circumstance does a drive through penalty mean a loss of 25 seconds, no matter how hard another driver pushes. I’m also taking into account Lewis would have passed Kimi anyway at some point, although I’m not sure that would make a valid argument… But yes, the penalty is out of proportion if you ask me.

I do not know precisely what the gap between Lewis and numbers 2 and 3 was at the finish line. I presume Massa finished within 10 secs, which is the amount of seconds I feel the penalty could/should have constituted, whereas Heidfeld didn’t. So I do not think Lewis was necessarily robbed of his victory, but I do feel he was robbed from second place. And seeing as we don’t yet know whether Nick will be penalized, he still might get just that position.

Simple fact of the matter is that Lewis could have easily avoided this mess by simply having used his head a little.
No doubt he knew passing Kimi so quickly could get him into trouble, and obviously he knew was faster round the track at that time. His impatience made him take a big risk there, and now it’s come back to bite him in he backside.
He did everything right, until he passed Raikkonen at La Source.

And I’m sure you’ll agree that this ironic line above would make a great title for the upcoming F1 Debrief, formerly known as the Sunday show. :D

Exactly Alex, Do the rules say that they have to hols back out of the slipstream? If so do you have to calculate the speed and the effective slipstream of a particular aerodynamic setup taking into cosideraion possible damage and tyre wear?

The rules don’t specify anything as specific as that…

These are the regs that Hamilton was punished under. No mention of slipstreaming or overtaking at all

    30.3
    a) During practice and the race, drivers may use only the track and must at all times observe the provisions of the Code relating to driving behaviour on circuits.

    b) Other than by driving on the track, Competitors are not permitted to attempt to alter the grip of any part of the track surface.

    Appendix L, Chapter 4, Article 2(g) states….

    g) The race track alone shall be used by the drivers during the
    race

Also Christine, Id like to hear your comments on the Hamilton and Kimi’s track position switches. I was under the impresion that you could only make one switch. But is this one car width? half a car width?
