The first ever pre-race Parade Lap from Sidepodcast debuted ahead of the Belgium GP. An hour long live chat with music and F1 discussion, to get things going before the action began. This week we did a couple of shout-outs, talked about the predictions for the upcoming race, what Honda have to do to get better and discussed who was having what for breakfast.
The music played in this show:
- Brother Love, Turn it Up
- Love = Action, In the Rain
- Ayla Brown, Know You Better
- Pudge, Christine, Christine, Christine
- Jennifer Richman, Better Days
- Jeff Coffey, Write About Me
- Info about these artists and more available on the music page.
As the first show, we’d love to hear your feedback. It was brilliant fun to record and hopefully it was acceptable to listen to. The next PL should be ahead of the race at Monza but we’ll let you know closer to the time.

Wow, I just started playing the In The Rain song on the group’s Myspace, and for some reason as soon as I heard the intro I felt choked up inside. Really is a great song

Just starting to listen again now.
A first suggestion in case you want to make things more interactive still: you’re playing music during the show, which is great. Perhaps, seeing as you’ll inevitably run out of songs you really like eventually, each show could feature some of the favourite songs of your listeners?
Think you can wok with that?
September 8th, 2008 at 11:36 amChristine said:
Absolutely. I’m not sure if we mentioned in the show, but we would love suggestions for music.
The songs have to be podsafe, but apart from that, we’re more than happy to take requests.

OK, now you got me downloading that In The Rain song and playing it over and over. It really is a powerful song, and I love it. All thanks to you guys
September 8th, 2008 at 11:38 amChristine said:
That’s excellent. Have you checked out any of their other songs? Curious what they’re like.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:43 amScott Woodwiss said:
I like the Ayla Brown song as well, and some of her stuff on her MySpace is great too.
I’ll make one recommendation - I currently like a song by a Finnish band called Poets of the Fall, the song is “Lift”. When you can, check their MySpace and have a listen. I think it’s great

Sorry? Podsafe?
September 8th, 2008 at 11:56 amScott Woodwiss said:
i think it means the song can be played on a podcast without getting into trouble with the record company. I guess if you just gave credit like you do with the other songs then it might be ok, but then i don’t know that much about copyright rules anyway.
OMG, has anyone seen the Red Bulletin banner at the bottom?! That’s not a sight I think anyone wants to see…
September 8th, 2008 at 11:56 amChristine said:
Sorry, definition is here.
“Podsafe is a term created in the podcasting community to refer to any work which, through its licensing, specifically allows the use of the work in podcasting, regardless of restrictions the same work might have in other realms.”
Basically means that the artists say podcasters can play it for free, and in return they get their music heard and talked about.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:11 pmAlenyaa said:
Right. And how do we know whether songs indeed are podsafe?
Or do you think you can easily find that out yourself when given suggestions?
September 8th, 2008 at 12:14 pmChristine said:
A lot of artists submit their songs to music.podshow.com, or garageband.com.
It may say on their website, or else we can try contacting the artist.

By the way, Christine, the parade1 file only runs about 40 minutes long. After that it’s just cut off. Details also say it should be about an hour long.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:17 pmAlenyaa said:
Ok, sure. I’ll check the websites you listed before making my suggestions

I was surprised to find Bloc Party had their music listed as podsafe (I guess it was as it was in one of the mini-series recently).
Bloc Party have a proper contract, multi-album deal with videos on MTV and everything.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pmChristine said:
I think we’ve also used Manic Street Preachers on a video, which blows my mind.
I’ve also seen a couple by Suzanne Vega on podshow.com, haven’t been brave enough to listen yet.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:22 pmChristine said:
Mine seems to be okay, but we have had people report problems before when it comes to playing longer files. Will look into it.

I’m using IE6 as a browser, maybe that helps?
September 8th, 2008 at 12:51 pmme said:
bruce springsteen is in there too. just a single track, but hopefully we can fit it in before the end of the season.
am thinking we need a post explaining podsafe a little more in depth, and listing the various ways songs can be found / suggested. also we should big up the music page some more, because we can obviously play any of those again.
glad people are getting into the music btw
September 8th, 2008 at 12:55 pmChristine said:
Is that a subtle hint?
September 8th, 2008 at 1:04 pmme said:
tis okay, i can. you’ve done enough, and there’s a podcast that needs editing
September 8th, 2008 at 1:05 pmScott Woodwiss said:
having another listen to In The Rain, it’s really is a song that gets to you, yet I can’t get enough of it
it’s the rhythm guitar in the beginning and throughout the song that just seems to get me a bit emotional.

Loved the music! *sings* Christine…. chriiistiiiine….
Is a live broadcast of a podcast being made still considered a podcast?
How much of a commercial track are you allowed to sample these days? 30 seconds?
September 8th, 2008 at 1:11 pmme said:
that’s a good question that hadn’t occurred to me.
depends on who you ask / when you ask them.
my take is - if record companies and artists are too damn stupid to appreciate the value of free promotion, we shouldn’t give them the time of day anyhow.

I decided for a laugh to chance the play speed to fast on the song, and it made it sound even better!
September 8th, 2008 at 1:17 pmScott Woodwiss said:
*sniff* oh man, i almost feel like crying because of this song, but i still can’t bring myself to stop listening to it. funny what 1 song can do to someone.

Don’t worry Christine!
Along with the BBC style dragging of windows & iPhone Live Comments that Me has to do clearly he needs to create a digg style live voting jukebox of songs that can be used on Parade Lap.
With all that in the queue to keep him busy you might get a chance to catch up!

There is one song I’d like to suggest for any episode of the Parade Lap, but I haven’t found it on neither music.podshow.com nor garageband.com.
The song I’m talking about is “Santa-Monica” by Theory of a Dead Man. Is there anything else I can do to find out whether it’s “podsafe” or not?
Cheers!
