Live Commenting: Italy - Free Practice 1

Whoever sorts out the calendar really needs to have a good, long, hard think. I know you can’t predict things like this latest Hamilton-gate, but to have such a gap after the snooze-fest of Valencia, and then be thrust into another race weekend before we’ve digested Spa is just, plain wrong. Also, back to back races, can we stop doing those? I don’t think there’s enough unnamed energy drink in the world.

Anyway, Free Practice 1 is upon us, whether I like it or not, and so we must look forward. It looks like there’s less chance of rain today than was earlier predicted, although there could be thunderstorms at some point before qualifying tomorrow. As ever, the weather keeps us guessing, but it’s not as likely to be raining as it was at Spa.

The teams tested at Monza very recently, just before the Belgium GP, so Friday could be a quiet day for us. The morning, in particular, will probably be lacking in action, as everyone keeps their cards close to their chest, and doesn’t feel the need to get any extra running in.

We’ve got a few drivers that need to have a good weekend. Heidfeld finally appears to have pulled his socks up and improved his performance, but it looks like the BMW bosses still haven’t made up their minds (waiting on Alonso, perhaps), so he still needs to work hard. Likewise, team mate Kubica has said that he might just still be thinking about the championship, despite the massive point deficit he holds to the leader at the moment. I guess if Raikkonen won’t give up until the end, and Kubica above him on points at the moment, it’s only fair for the BMW to keep up the challenge.

It will be interesting to see who appears to have the upper hand at this track. Previous form would suggest that Ferrari will be stronger, but McLaren have been super fast recently, and Hamilton is apparently very hyped to do well after the penalty in Spa.

    might be because he’s on the inters which seem to be a bit faster due to the wet section on the back of the circuit.

    yeah i understand that but it would be nice to see maybe some other cars out? they should all count themselves lucky. if it’s supposed to be raining in the next 5-10 minutes, then why are they not making the most of a fairly dry track?

    Yup. However, you know that some teams will get the 10 place penalty and some will get the drive though - even though it’s all the same regulation they’ve broken. :D

    But a 3 year deal with an 2 time world champion could bring the necessary experience to bring them forward by the mythical 6 tenths.

    Well Grosjean is so-so, hasn’t lived up to his GP2 Asia Series form. He’s almost there. What about di Grassi though? Done quite well in GP2 even though he hasn’t participated in all the races.

    well to be honest christine, i get what you mean about it not being a proper race, but what else do you expect them to do? they can’t control the weather, so they have to make do with what they have and do what they think is right. If they let them race at normal speeds, there’d be no-one left on circuit and the race would be stopped anyway. best to at least get the cars out at some speed behind the safety car to try and sweep the water away.

    they’ve had situations like this in fuji last year, belgium 97, and adelaide in 1990 and 1991. they had to actually cancel the race after 15 laps or so because the conditions were just as they are now - virtually undriveable. that race is on record as the shortest f1 race in the history of the championship.

    Personally, I would rather a race was delayed or cancelled than watch the cars trundle round behind a safety car. That situation isn’t a race, and it’s a waste of my time. I take on board all your points, and I know they can’t control the weather. I’m still bitter about the last lap at Spa, so probably best not to listen to me.

    Fuji 1976 - whole race
    Monaco 1984 - whole race, was red flagged.
    Adelaide 1989 - whole race, prost gave up after 1 lap in the conditions
    Adelaide 1991 - whole race, was cancelled after 14 laps
    Kyalami 1993 - right at the end of the race
    Interlagos 1993 - during the race, caused prost to go off. weather cleared up
    Donington 1993 - whole
