It’s All About Breath Control

Time once again for the Parade Lap, a nice chilled out way of starting the race build up. I say chilled out, but with everything going on at the moment, it might be that we talk about more than just waffles this week. Either way, we’ll be live for an hour before the ITV coverage starts in the UK.

We’ve got some good songs lined up, a couple of topics to get through, and of course, the most important thing of all for this morning: weather watch.

There’s a live stream available of the show, although it’s more about the audio than looking at the top of my head.

Even though we’re quite content to chatter on for an hour, we really want to hear from you. Predictions, ideas, suggestions, worries, shout outs, we want it all. Call us via Skype, our username is sidepodcast, or the phone number you need is: 0121 28 87225.

If you don’t want to call in, that’s fine, we’ll be in the Live Commenting Live… Thing, keeping an eye on all that goes on. Click the triangle in the top right corner, or this link, to join in the fun. We should be live at 11am.

We’ll also be keeping a close eye on the comments, so we want to hear what you’ve got to say via the “Live Commenting Live… Thing” as well. We’ll be on at (hopefully) 11am, so stay tuned.

I’d like to see Vettel & Webber on the podium, but it’s gonna take some courage to predict some sort of finishing order…

    Here’s a quote:

At 22 years and 26 days, Alonso broke the previous mark of 22 years, 103 days set in December 1959 by Bruce McLaren at the United States Grand Prix.

    So he would be.

My Favourite to win is DeSeb - he is my favourite driver - so he is always my fasvourite to win. My second fav would be either LeSeb or Fisi (to give Ferrari a red face)

Sadly I think Macca and Kovy are strategically the best to pull this off.

Lewis will have an amazing drive that will either end in good scoring or a bin/spin!

I think Alonso could drive intelligently even to being on the podium.

BMWs do not have grip after a few laps so they will be quiet all afternoon.

    Expect Jarno to do well!

    My predictions..

    1 Kovy
    2 DeSeb
    3 Alonso
    4 Webber
    5 LeSeb
    6 Lewis
    7 Felipe
    8 Jarno

    I’ll do it.
    1. Massa.
after that I have no idea…. i don’t expect to see Hamilton in the top 3. i think he’ll be driving for points and perhaps a little more conservative than he normally is. He’s midpack which is really risky for fast cars, unless you’re Michael Shumacher, in which case, it really doesn’t matter. For the record, I’m not a fan of ferrari. i

I’d love to see Seb take the win, to give the sport a nice happy glow after two weeks of off-field publicity.

Best stat about Vettel is that he is the driver who was the quickest to ever be fined in his career. 9 seconds into his career he was caught speeding in the pitlane and fined $1,000.

He was also the youngest driver to lead a race.

    Hi Sidepodcast,

The weather forecaster on BBC1 said there’s a good chance of rain for the Monza GP, this means that there’s a good chance the guys at the front of the grid could win; Massa being the favourite - but i would love to see Vettel hold him off somehow and win.
I don’t hold much hope for Lewis and Kimi’s chances because i believe they are carrying less wing than the top ten, hence their poor qualifying three effort. In a dry race they would be able to slip-stream their way through the field like a knife through butter but in the rain it will (for them) be like hauling a juggernaut round the circuits high-speed corners.
Lets hope Lewis doesn’t cut any chicanes…if he does, he might as well issue himself his own penalty by parking the car in the garage and then taking the first flight home.

    My race finish prediction :

    1 : Massa
    2 : Kovy
    3 : Webber
    4 : Alonso
    5 : Heidfeld
6 : Kubica (possible freak win)
    7 : Hamilton
    8 : Kimi

Ferrari said they were worried when they looked at the engine…

Worth a look at the rules…

    a) Each driver may use no more than one engine for two consecutive Events in which his team competes. Other than under f) below, should a driver use a replacement engine before the end of the qualifying practice session he will drop ten places on the starting grid at that Event and an additional ten places each time a further engine is used.
Unless the driver fails to finish the race (see below) the engine fitted to the car at the end of the Event must remain in it until the end of the next Event. Any driver who failed to finish the race at the first of the two Events for reasons which the technical delegate accepts as being beyond the control
of the team or driver, may start the second with a different engine without a penalty being incurred.
An engine will be deemed to have been used once the car’s timing transponder has shown that it has left the pit lane.

    b) If a driver is replaced after the first of a two Event period, having finished the first Event, the replacement driver must use the engine which was used for the first Event.

    c) Should a driver use a replacement engine after the qualifying practice session, he will be required to start the relevant race from the back of the starting grid in accordance with Article 36.2c).

    d) After consultation with the relevant engine supplier the FIA will attach seals to each engine in order to ensure that no significant moving parts can be rebuilt or replaced.
Following the first of the two Events, and within two hours of the end of the post race parc fermé, exhaust blanking plates (with one 10mm diameter inspection hole per cylinder) and further seals will be applied in order to ensure that the engine cannot be run until the second Event. These seals will be removed at 09.00 on the day of initial scrutineering at the second Event.

    e) Other than the straightforward replacement of one engine unit with another, a change will also be deemed to have taken place if any of the FIA seals are damaged or removed from the original engine after it has been used for the first time.

    f) Except during the last Event of the Championship season, each driver will be permitted to use a replacement engine without incurring a penalty the first time this becomes necessary during the season.

    So who hasn’t used their joker engine then? i’m not good at keeping up with these things… {lou - 105 comments ago}

Everyone has a joker engine change available except for the Ferraris, Webber, Bourdais and Sutil.

However, the deliberate changes must be on or before the penultimate grand prix, because Article f) of the Article LadySnowcat quoted bars drivers from using jokers in the final race of the season.
