Live Commenting: Japan – Free Practice 2

What a turn up for the books, Fuji was all things bright and beautiful. I could even see the top of the mountain. It’s a very pretty circuit once the clouds clear, although 5live did say that they may be returning so we’ll have to see what happens ahead of FP2.

In terms of the action, it was off to a slow start, surprising given how little dry running the teams have done at the track. In fact, apparently there has never been a dry grand prix at Fuji, so no one knows what to expect, really.

It looks like the usual McLaren/Ferrari battle up front, with Hamilton getting first dibs at the top spot earlier this morning. Massa has the legs on Raikkonen, but so, it seems, does Kovalainen. Meanwhile, the Japanese contingent, Toyota and Honda both finished in 15th and below which isn’t exactly impressive showing. Nakajima had us worried for a while, running around at the back, but he pulled it out of the bag and slipped into the lofty heights of 10th.

There were no major incidents during the first session, a few drivers explored the run off areas, but no one came to any harm. The main issue was the green tyres. Whilst we’ve made fun of them, and called them ugly, they’re actually useless. It appears that no one ran soft tyres in FP1, but there’s no way of knowing because firstly, from a distance the green isn’t significantly different from white, and secondly, the stripes rub off after only a couple of laps. David Croft of 5live said we could quote him: “It’s rubbish for the sport.”

In which case, we will be relying on everyone to be eagle-eyed and looking out for who’s on what tyres, and that means paying close attention. Hard, when most of us are sleep-deprived, but we’ll all try out best.

I’ll be tuned to the ITV stream, and studying the official live timing. There’s plenty of pictures and links to look at in drop.io, and we’ll be adding more soon. Please join us in the Live Commenting Live… Thing as always, and let us know what you think of the action so far.

Erm… all of the links I posted previously work in the US, anyway.

I think that justin.tv is a pain to embed, and DS tagged one that I think is difficult to extract from their PHP shenanigans, but this one should be fine inside and embed tag:

I dunno, I think it’s easier to tell wear from more distant camera shots. That used to take an in-car shot.

I don’t like losing the ability to tell whose on what compound in the least, but we did do without that for a long time…

True. And the problem is worse because I’m pretty sure my own computer doesn’t have quite the same reaction to it, even though I generally use the same browser (Firefox) for both. (Note that I’ve been using Dad’s computer tonight for noise reasons – my parents wanted a full night’s sleep even if I didn’t). I did hear my dad complaining about the amount of resources various little auto-loading programmes took up, so it may simply be that it was trying to shift too many resources in one go to process the video and the other (mostly text-based) sites I run during the session.

I ruled out the ITV video as the cause when I loaded my set-up of tabs and instances without it the second time around. The whole thing lasted about five seconds before crashing again. Strangely, it didn’t affect the Live Timing (which was in IE, but for other reasons I can only have one instance of that loaded at one time without having to reboot the entire computer).

I spent two or three years doing shift work and we spent a lot of time swapping shifts as there was only one equivalent person on each shift. As a result I never knew whether it was day or night. I found the best way to cope was to eat whatever meal was appropriate for that time of day regardless what I was doing. So some days I would wake up to dinner and have breakfast before I went to bed or whatever odd combination fitted in.

The other option is to just eat what you fancy at whatever time you feel like it. If you don’t think you are hungry donlt eat. If you feel like eating half a chicken at 4am do it. If you feel like nachos before the race eat nachos. Your body knows what it needs.

I love Bernie’s explanation as to why Canadian got drop from the calendar:

Ecclestone said the problem in America was that the races were promoted by private companies.

“America works differently. Certain worldwide events, like F1 itself in certain nations or the Olympic Games, are financed by the countries.

“In the American continent, by contrast, they’re organised by private companies, who want to make a profit even before the race is staged: that’s a bit too much.”

I am confused as to why Bernie is complaining about the companies that operate the Grand Prix in North America are following Bernie’s business model of making a profit before the race is staged…..

The real problem is that after a sell-out there is not a profit for these indpendent companies, So, why should they continue to operate?

Using the “Me” Strategy, I am figuring that one of these five drivers is actually going to win the race for Jordan F1. The “Christine” Strategy was based on most points.

    Alonso
    Trulli
    Kubica
    Vettel
    Glock

Glock is due there will be a 18 car Trulli Train behind him. Button in the caboose. :D

What you are not going to invest in the “Give To Jordan” Corporation? It actually at unchanged at 0.25 with a volume of +1.

I had quite a surreal moment this afternoon. I went to Bridgestone’s “Tyre Talk” with Hamashima san, which is always useful but under-attended.

Anyway, it turns out that the green paint on the tyres is applied by these giant ‘magic marker’-type things. There were some on the table. I had to laugh. They instantly reminded me of the Kenny Everett Television Show (abstruse reference, I know). One of Everett’s characters was a kind of mime who appeared on an entirely white set and then drew scenery with a giant pen… oh, I guess you had to be there.

Have the same fantasy team as Jordan! Hope this does not jinx him!

I wanted to support at least one Japanese team since it is their home circuit.

The folks in the aero department can study for ways to make the car go faster….

I would have bought it but the gal does not want it in her pool. I think it would have been a riot.

    Get your curries ready, we’re going to India in 2011! {Scott Woodwiss – 31 comments ago}

We were going there in 2010. Two questions:

    a) Will we actually visit the track in this new slot, will it be delayed further for whatever reason or will this race not happen at all?

    b) Does this take the pressure off Force India, who were aiming to be on the podium in the first Indian Grand Prix?

    I use the alarms on my phone. Three alarms at 2 minute intervals. That generally gets me up. {Steven Roy – 25 comments ago}

One alarm is enough for me. If for some reason I don’t wake up for it, it’s so loud that my parents invariably do. The only occasion where this has happened was when I set my alarm for 1am by mistake. I’d finally dropped off to sleep 20 minutes before Dad woke me up to ask what all the racket was for…

Now have your say...
