Live Commenting: Bathurst
There seems to be some demand for live commenting the Bathurst event, and we aim to please. Jeremy has been really kind and supplied an introduction to the event, because we know very little. If you’re watching any of the racing, then feel free to use the Live Commenting Live… Thing to it’s best abilities.
Mt Panorama, Bathurst. New South Wales. A few hours drive west of Sydney, this 6. 2 km track with the almost 2 km long ‘Conrod’ straight, is known worldwide. The cars take roughly 6 hours to cover 161 laps. For touring cars, (’V8 Supercars’ in Australia) this is a long race.
As with all forms of racing, there will always be a difference between the top teams, and the rest. Even though V8 Supercars is a parity formula, with the cars resembling their road going counterparts in body shape only, the factory (GM) Holden and Ford teams usually lead the way. The exciting thing is, there are a lot of teams setting times within a few tenths of pole position.
It’s different from when I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. The King of the Mountain, the late Peter Brock, won this race 9 times (10 if you count the short lived 24 hour race). In 1979, driving the 05 Holden Torana A9X, he won by 6 laps, setting a new lap record on the last lap! Now, its 5 sprint races all in a row. With most cars getting between 30 and 35 laps out of a tank of fuel, the talk of a four stop race is fantasy. Next year, the series switches to E85 ethanol blend, but not much will change.
So, it all comes down to when you make your last pit stop. Safety cars are a common sight - will there be one anywhere near when most cars are filling up for the last time? The most common phrase from the commentators these days is “buy yourself a position in the final stint”. Its all about being in the top 10 near the end, with a car that is faster than the rest.
Whether that speed difference is because of better tyre management over the weekend, or lower fuel load due to strategy, the drivers, (who have been up since 4:30 in the morning) as usual, will make the difference. Who will make a mistake under pressure?
My money is on Mark Skaife and Garth Tander from the factory Holden team. Both men have won this race, and the year long championship in the past. Wise heads, plenty of talent, red paint on the car. How can they lose? Easy - this is Bathurst!

The TV coverage really is first class. I’m impressed with the effort that Channel 7 have gone to for international broadcasters; even making commentary available whilst they’re on a break. Wilson has been a regular in the series for a number of years. But like you said, it doesn’t attract that many international drivers. The reason is that driving means moving to Australia, and being largely forgotten by Europe and North America.
This isn’t really an issue for talented Aussies like Craig Lowndes, Russel Ingall, Will Davison, etc. who didn’t have enough money to complete proper careers in junior single-seater formulae. For them, they’re living at home, earning good money, and competing in one of the biggest sports in Australia.
Even for young drivers who end up racing GTs in Europe, there’s always the faint hope that they could emulate Mark Webber and use sportscar racing as a step on the ladder to Formula One.

At the end of 1999, Wilson was offered a drive with the ailing Minardi team but a lack of financial backing saw him lose the ride at the last minute to a less experienced but more financially solvent driver. But all was not lost, after an impressive stint at Williams, Wilson spent 2000 as an F1 test driver for Michelin as the tyre manufacturer prepared to re-enter Formula One competition. (from wikipedia)
Also, he didn’t go to japanese F3000, he went to Champ Car series in 2001 and since 2002 he is competing in australian V8.

On the topic of Max Wilson, it’s worth baring in mind that he’s one of the few foreign drivers who’s been able to adapt and run competitively in the series. After his first couple of seasons, it really did look like he had the potential to become a real front-runner, but he hasn’t made as much progress as was originally expected.

There’s also one race in Hamilton, New Zealand. It’s a street circuit.
The New Zealand round used to be held at Pukekohe, which is a track I love. It is a little antiquated, and some say dangerous. Tilke would torch the place.

Should car 1 have been permited to do their 10 second penalty in with their pit stop, I was always under the impression that the penalty had to be served seperately, an interesting thing how they are blaming the clutch on this car for the poor start but when you look at the replay you can clearly see he stalled it because he had to restart the car, it is obvious that the anouncer is a Holden fan, Personally I don’t care what brand wins but don’t they pander to the Holden teams in a big way.

They like sticking to their rules, which can be a good thing, providing they’re good rules.
A few years ago (I don’t know whether this is still the case) they had exact requirements in terms of how far alongside a driver would have to be when overtaking. When incidents occurred, if the driver doing the overtaking was judged by the stewards not to be sufficiently alongside, he’d be punnished. Otherwise, it’d be the driver who was being overtaken receiving the penalty.
