With just three races to go, the championship battle looked like it was going to be won or lost here. Thankfully, all it’s done is got just that little bit closer. Listen to today’s F1 Digest for a rundown of all the race action.
The Race
Considering we were expecting a dry race at Fuji to be on the duller side of things, the racing action was amazing. The first corner had an impact throughout the rest of the race, as drivers spent ages trying to restore the chaos of that initial turn.
Conclusions
A few penalties here and there, and a few surprises to be aware of, we take a look through the driver quotes post-race and find out how people are feeling going into the penultimate race of the season.

Enjoyed the F1 Digest! Great summary as always.
Especially loved hearing the Bourdais quote!

I would love to see Kubica nick the title in the next two races. He has been the most consummate driver of the year so far.
Lewis and Massa might not have a chance of winning a title for a few years if they don’t do it this year. Vettel and Alonso - i’m sure - will be dealt into the high rollers ‘championship’ contenders table next year. With Massa, Hamilton, Kubica and Raikkonen…that will make six possible championship rivals…

Great show Christine.
I am surprised that you left out Massa’s comments on his collisions. Apparently he thinks his incident with Lewis was hard but fair. We will see if he thinks that the next time soomeone punts him off. He also thinks he was in the corner when Bourdais rammed him from behind.
Add these comments to his comments on Sutil in Valencia and you have to question either his eyesight or his sense of reality.

@Steven If you question Massa’s eyesight not sure how you cannot question Lewis’ foot co-ordination or lack of. By the way at Valencia it was the pit crew’s eyesight at fault, Massa was given the green light to go. Not sure about Lewis’ eyesight he missed seeing a Red light and a stationary Red Ferrari which he hit. F1 drivers do not have a sense of reality it would prevent them taking things to the limit.
I have put all three incidents into a frame by frame analysis.
Start - Kimi was really taken out by both Macca drivers. Lewis completely outbraked himself and had no control while entering the corner. Incredibly dangerous and stupid. No question about a penalty there. Kovy definitely contacted Kimi and actually looked like Kimi got bumped by Lewis as well but you cannot be absolutely sure.
Massa and Hamilton - yeap whatever Massa thinks he deserved the penalty. It was a fairly small error but it was Hamilton’s corner no question - yes Hamilton squeezed Massa of the track - it was a robust move on Hamilton but not unfair. Guess this evens out Hamilton destroying Kimi’s race yet again.
The Massa-Bourdais - as you exit the pit then having a corner so soon was the main problem. As explained by Stuart and discussed at drivers meeting the right of way is given to cars on the track rather than to the exiting from the pitlane. Bourdais did have an opportunity to yield and did not. The video is not greatest for a definitive answer but I think the penalty was fair. I am sad as they are my team and it lost them points, but reckon Massa was entitled to that corner. Earlier I thought it was unfair, but have changed my mind to it being fair after the frame by frame analysis and further consideration.
Massa’s overtake of Webber - actually Mark was a bit naughty there so he was lucky not to get a penalty (I am pleased he did not) he gave Massa no place to go and Webber had made three moves on the straight to block Massa from using a slip stream. A brilliant overtake by Massa but his car was clearly faster.
Conclusion - they were all fair calls! Personally I am really really upset with Lewis - he is a menace on the race track and really hope he loses the championship. This is honestly the first time I almost feel vindictive (I think you know what I mean) to a driver. Sure it was a mistake but how many times does he do the same sort of idiotic driving that puts other drivers at risk and wreaks their race. This will go down really well with the other F1 drivers when they review the material.
I think that there should be cumulative punishment. After getting three penalties based on mistakes by the driver in a season the driver should miss the next race rather like our driver’s license system. If you get a further three penalties you are excluded from the rest of the season.

I guess Lewis was misquoted again!
