Live Commenting: Japan – The Race
It looks like this weekend is going to decide whether the championship gets even closer, or is pretty much over in Hamilton’s favour. He leads to Massa’s fifth, and whilst Raikkonen and Kovalainen are both in the middle of things (in more ways than one), it looks like this could be the deciding moment.
So far, Fuji doesn’t seem to be a particularly thrilling race track. We’ve seen a couple of spins, and some running wide at Turn 1, but there doesn’t seem to be too much to challenge our drivers. Plus, that long straight is particularly yawnsome. The weather was supposed to play a factor, but with most forecasts suggesting a dry race, this seems highly unlikely.
However, you never know what’s going to happen, and it’s always worth getting up at 4 in the morning to see what’s going on. Both Toyota and Toro Rosso boys have made it into the top ten, and they may be able to wreak some havoc with the natural order of things. Coulthard is only just out of the top ten, and if he feels like doing some overtaking, we could see all manner of incidents.
It may be that the race comes down to action in the pit stops rather than on track. Ferrari have already had some worrying glitches with their reinstated lollipop, however that may just be the guys blowing the dust off and getting ready for the real action to begin. Honda have decided not to race with their new traffic light system, so it will be lollipops down the order, and here’s hoping that everything goes smoothly, and no mechanics get hurt.
The time is almost upon us, then, so here are a few links that might be useful:

I agree – I never liked that aspect about Senna – but off the track he had real humanitarian. These three were/are the worst drivers in terms of sportsmanship. Fernando, Felipe and Kimi are hard but not deliberate or routinely stupid. I be honest I would prefer Massa to win this year as he has driven more fairly than Lewis – he has also had terrible luck. People say Massa cannot race unless he is in the lead – today he showed the exact opposite and he did not give up as others have said. However, it is fantastic to see Robert close to the leaders and a return of form from Alonso

Good Morning (tired) ladies and (exhausted) gentlemen.
Surprised that my ipod alarm actually worked, to the sound of Christine on F1 Minute, which nearly scared the life out of me.
The race itslef, Robert Kubica, what a god isn’t he, a fantastic dive from 6th to 1st, just a pity really Alonso was even better.
Hamilton, he doesn’t do end of seasons does he, if the seasons ended after 15 races, he would be a happy person. But my god, the move on Raikkonen was dangerous, even if he didn’t make contact. Massa similarily, which I thought was always going to end up in tears.
Piquet, gotta say he drove solid today, didn’t make any mistakes and was just solid.
Bourdais, about time he got a good result, ahead of Vettel, I really hope he doesn’t get a penalty.
Heidfeld, was quiet.
Nasty shunt for Coulthard, even nastier for my FR team, not getting any points from him, but, I think my others of Kubica, Heidfeld, Webber and Vettel might rack up a couple of points.
Erm, oh yeah, my sound didn’t work for half the race, and not having my morning food, I decided to commentate, one was called Scott who got bored of anyone not in the top 3, and the other was Mark who was a massive BMW fan and shouted some nasty things at Alonso you wouldn’t hear Brundle say on ITV. It was fun. And pretty sad too.
So, erm, have a nice morning sleep something, I need something to eat.

Well done Stuart…
On the subject of journalism have a look at the cover of Autosport…
They had positive points for each driver…
Lewis’s had “Super confident”… to which they should have added an “Over” in the middle…
Massa’s had “Amazing qualifying speed” but missed out the “except when it matters”….

Well-put! Hahaha! Pitpass called it ‘red mist’, and that’s pretty accurate for both of them today.

Talking of misrepresentation in journalism, autosport.com has the title on one story of “Kovaleinan says Hamilton’s move fair”…
In the interview he said he thought it was OK but was actually paying too much attention to what he was doing to judge and he’d have to watch it later…
This is how things like the Kubica story are blown up….

Planet-F1’s headlines:
A Contrite Lewis Hamilton Admits Mistake But Questions Penalties
Heikki Defends Team-Mate’s ‘Clean’ Move In The Wake Of Penalty
Well, they’re not absolving Lewis, but they’re minimizing his stupidity.

Just hoping that the title goes all the way to Interlagos…
It’s ironic that it was, once again, Heikki who got the unreliability whilst Lewis was OK….
Surely Lewis is due one engine or wing failure…

FIA have just confirmed that Bourdais will have 25sec added to his elapsed race time.

That will put him down to tenth I believe, so Massa gets an extra point.
Shocking decision, no way was it a penalty

No, no, no, no, no. They’ve done it again! What are they playing at? Not only have they ruined the race result but penalised someone who blatantly didn’t do anything wrong. What else could Le Seb have done?
Remember the days when no penalties were handed out after races?

Buemi spun the medical car in practice!! {Christine – more comments ago than I care to count}
Whoops! If they’re using this as an audition for a medical/safety car seat at some future date, then you have to say Wurz is looking good and Buemi, er… …isn’t.

I’m guessing, but was that the Toyota grandstand?
{Flibster – after Christine’s comment, and about 4 minutes before the race started}
It was. I laughed when I saw that image because the Renault supporter stood out like a sore thumb in his dark blue coat against the white-and-red masses.

My hypothesis is that drivers don’t get into trouble for admitting they’re something other than walking-and-smiling statues.

I am completely convinced that that was Massa’s fault. In fact, I counted him break four regulations, at which point I would have contemplated disqualifying him for systematic ignorance of the regulations, had I been a steward and been able to find an Article permitting me to do so (I strongly suspect there’s one in there somewhere).

I like that scenario. Frankly, I think both Massa and Hamilton have made two many errors to be deserving of the championship, and are only in the running for it because they’re in the best cars and their team-mates have had even more stuff go wrong for them than Felipe and Lewis.
Robert Kubica, on the other hand, has been consistently quick, avoided errors, maximised his somewhat slower BMW and generally driven like a champion.
